Wake Effects in Lower Carbon Future Scenarios

In August 2022, the U.S. Congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which intended to accelerate U.S. decarbonization, clean energy manufacturing, and deployment of new power and end-use technologies. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory has examined possible scenarios for growth by 2050 resulting from the IRA and other emissions reduction drivers and defined several possible scenarios for large-scale wind deployment. These scenarios incorporate large clusters of turbines operating as wind farms grouped around existing or likely transmission lines which will result in wind farm wakes. Using a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model, we assess these wake effects in a domain in the U. S. Southern Great Plains for a representative year with four scenarios in order to validate the simulations, estimate the internal wake impact, and quantify the cluster wake effect. Herein, we present a validation of the ”no wind farm” scenario and quantify the internal waking effect for the ”ONE” wind farm scenario. Future work will use the “MID” scenario (more than 8000 turbines) and the “HI” scenario (more than 16,000 turbines) to quantify the effect of cluster wakes or inter-farm wakes on power production.

A chromosome-level genome assembly of the varied leaved jewelflower, Streptanthus diversifolius, reveals a recent whole genome duplication

Abstract The Streptanthoid complex, a clade of primarily Streptanthus and Caulanthus species in the Thelypodieae (Brassicaceae) is an emerging model system for ecological and evolutionary studies. This complex spans the full range of the California Floristic Province including desert, foothill, and mountain environments. The ability of these related species to radiate into dramatically different environments makes them a desirable study subject for exploring how plant species expand their ranges and adapt to new environments over time. Ecological and evolutionary studies for this complex have revealed fascinating variation in serpentine soil adaptation, defense compounds, germination, flowering, and life history strategies. Until now a lack of publicly available genome assemblies has hindered the ability to relate these phenotypic observations to their underlying genetic and molecular mechanisms. To help remedy this situation, we present here a chromosome-level genome assembly and annotation of Streptanthus diversifolius, a member of the Streptanthoid Complex, developed using Illumina, Hi-C, and HiFi sequencing technologies. Construction of this assembly also provides further evidence to support the previously reported recent whole genome duplication unique to the Thelypodieae. This whole genome duplication may have provided individuals in the Streptanthoid Complex the genetic arsenal to rapidly radiate throughout the California Floristic Province and to occupy commonly inhospitable environments including serpentine soils.

A Chromosome-Scale Genome Assembly of a Helicoverpa zea Strain Resistant to Bacillus thuringiensis Cry1Ac Insecticidal Protein

Helicoverpa zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is an insect pest of major cultivated crops in North and South America. The species has adapted to different host plants and developed resistance to several insecticidal agents, including Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) insecticidal proteins in transgenic cotton and maize. Helicoverpa zea populations persist year-round in tropical and subtropical regions, but seasonal migrations into temperate zones increase the geographic range of associated crop damage. To better understand the genetic basis of these physiological and ecological characteristics, we generated a high-quality chromosome-level assembly for a single H. zea male from Bt-resistant strain, HzStark_Cry1AcR. Hi-C data were used to scaffold an initial 375.2 Mb contig assembly into 30 autosomes and the Z sex chromosome (scaffold N50 = 12.8 Mb and L50 = 14). The scaffolded assembly was error-corrected with a novel pipeline, polishCLR. The mitochondrial genome was assembled through an improved pipeline and annotated. Assessment of this genome assembly indicated 98.8% of the Lepidopteran Benchmark Universal Single-Copy Ortholog set were complete (98.5% as complete single copy). Repetitive elements comprised approximately 29.5% of the assembly with the plurality (11.2%) classified as retroelements. This chromosome-scale reference assembly for H. zea, ilHelZeax1.1, will facilitate future research to evaluate and enhance sustainable crop production practices.

Generation of a chromosome-scale genome assembly of the insect-repellent terpenoid-producing Lamiaceae species, Callicarpa americana

Plants exhibit wide chemical diversity due to the production of specialized metabolites that function as pollinator attractants, defensive compounds, and signaling molecules. Lamiaceae (mints) are known for their chemodiversity and have been cultivated for use as culinary herbs, as well as sources of insect repellents, health-promoting compounds, and fragrance. We report the chromosome-scale genome assembly of Callicarpa americana L. (American beautyberry), a species within the early-diverging Callicarpoideae clade of Lamiaceae, known for its metallic purple fruits and use as an insect repellent due to its production of terpenoids. Using long-read sequencing and Hi-C scaffolding, we generated a 506.1-Mb assembly spanning 17 pseudomolecules with N50 contig and N50 scaffold sizes of 7.5 and 29.0 Mb, respectively. In all, 32,164 genes were annotated, including 53 candidate terpene synthases and 47 putative clusters of specialized metabolite biosynthetic pathways. Our analyses revealed 3 putative whole-genome duplication events, which, together with local tandem duplications, contributed to gene family expansion of terpene synthases. Kolavenyl diphosphate is a gateway to many of the bioactive terpenoids in C. americana; experimental validation confirmed that CamTPS2 encodes kolavenyl diphosphate synthase. Syntenic analyses with Tectona grandis L. f. (teak), a member of the Tectonoideae clade of Lamiaceae known for exceptionally strong wood resistant to insects, revealed 963 collinear blocks and 21,297 C. americana syntelogs. Access to the C. americana genome provides a road map for rapid discovery of genes encoding plant-derived agrichemicals and a key resource for understanding the evolution of chemical diversity in Lamiaceae.

The Tianlai dish pathfinder array: design, operation, and performance of a prototype transit radio interferometer

ABSTRACT The Tianlai Dish Pathfinder Array is a radio interferometer designed to test techniques for 21 cm intensity mapping in the post-reionization universe as a means for measuring large-scale cosmic structure. It performs drift scans of the sky at constant declination. We describe the design, calibration, noise level, and stability of this instrument based on the analysis of about 5% of 6200 h of on-sky observations through 2019 October. Beam pattern determinations using drones and the transit of bright sources are in good agreement, and compatible with electromagnetic simulations. Combining all the baselines, we make maps around bright sources and show that the array behaves as expected. A few hundred hours of observations at different declinations have been used to study the array geometry and pointing imperfections, as well as the instrument noise behaviour. We show that the system temperature is below 80 K for most feed antennas and that noise fluctuations decrease as expected with integration time, at least up to a few hundred seconds. Analysis of long integrations, from 10 nights of observations of the North Celestial Pole (NCP), yielded visibilities with amplitudes of 20–30 mK, consistent with the expected signal from the NCP radio sky with ${\lt}10\,$ mK precision for 1 MHz × 1 min binning. Hi-pass filtering the spectra to remove smooth spectrum signal yields a residual consistent with zero signal at the $0.5\,$ mK level.

Lyman-α transmission properties of the intergalactic medium in the CoDaII simulation

ABSTRACT The decline in abundance of Lyman-α (Lyα) emitting galaxies at z ≳ 6 is a powerful and commonly used probe to constrain the progress of cosmic reionization. We use the CoDaII simulation, which is a radiation hydrodynamic simulation featuring a box of ∼94 comoving Mpc side length, to compute the Lyα transmission properties of the intergalactic medium (IGM) at z ∼ 5.8 to 7. Our results mainly confirm previous studies, i.e. we find a declining Lyα transmission with redshift and a large sightline-to-sightline variation. However, motivated by the recent discovery of blue Lyα peaks at high redshift, we also analyse the IGM transmission on the blue side, which shows a rapid decline at z ≳ 6 of the blue transmission. This low transmission can be attributed not only to the presence of neutral regions but also to the residual neutral hydrogen within ionized regions, for which a density even as low as $n_{\rm HI}\sim 10^{-9}\, \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$ (sometimes combined with kinematic effects) leads to a significantly reduced visibility. Still, we find that $\sim 1{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ of sightlines towards M1600AB ∼ −21 galaxies at z ∼ 7 are transparent enough to allow a transmission of a blue Lyα peak. We discuss our results in the context of the interpretation of observations.

WALLABY pilot survey: H i gas disc truncation and star formation of galaxies falling into the Hydra I cluster

ABSTRACT We present results from our analysis of the Hydra I cluster observed in neutral atomic hydrogen (H i) as part of the Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey (WALLABY). These WALLABY observations cover a 60-square-degree field of view with uniform sensitivity and a spatial resolution of 30 arcsec. We use these wide-field observations to investigate the effect of galaxy environment on H i gas removal and star formation quenching by comparing the properties of cluster, infall, and field galaxies extending up to ∼5R200 from the cluster centre. We find a sharp decrease in the H i-detected fraction of infalling galaxies at a projected distance of ∼1.5R200 from the cluster centre from $\sim 85{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ to $\sim 35{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$. We see evidence for the environment removing gas from the outskirts of H i-detected cluster and infall galaxies through the decrease in the H i to r-band optical disc diameter ratio. These galaxies lie on the star-forming main sequence, indicating that gas removal is not yet affecting the inner star-forming discs and is limited to the galaxy outskirts. Although we do not detect galaxies undergoing galaxy-wide quenching, we do observe a reduction in recent star formation in the outer disc of cluster galaxies, which is likely due to the smaller gas reservoirs present beyond the optical radius in these galaxies. Stacking of H i non-detections with H i masses below $M_{\rm {HI}}\lesssim 10^{8.4}\, \rm {M}_{\odot }$ will be required to probe the H i of galaxies undergoing quenching at distances ≳60 Mpc with WALLABY.

Decoding the star forming properties of gas-rich galaxy pairs

Here we extend the analysis of Bok et al. (2020) in which the H i content of isolated galaxies from the AMIGA (Analysis of the interstellar Medium in Isolated GAlaxies) sample and selected paired galaxies from ALFALFA (Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA) were examined as a potential driver of galaxy location on the WISE (Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer) mid-infrared SFR–M * sequence. By further characterizing the isolated and pair galaxy samples, i.e. in terms of optical galaxy morphology, a more detailed and quantitative description of local galaxy environment by way of the local number density (η) and tidal strength (Q) parameters, star formation efficiency (SFE HI ), and H i integrated profile asymmetries, we present plausible pathways for the broadening of the pair sample H i deficiency distribution towards both high and low deficiencies compared to the narrower isolated galaxy sample distribution (i.e. σ PAIRS = 0.34 versus σ AMIGA = 0.28). We associate the gas-rich tail of the pair deficiency distribution with the highest Q values, large profile asymmetries, and low SFEs. From this, we infer that merger activity is enhancing gas supplies, as well as disrupting the efficiency of star formation, via strong gravitational torques. The gas-poor wing of the deficiency distribution appears to be populated with galaxies in denser environments (with larger η values on average), more akin to groups. Despite our gas-rich selection criterion, there is a small population of early-type galaxies in the pair sample, which primarily fall in the positive deficiency wing of the distribution. These results suggest that a combination of a denser galaxy environment, early-type morphology, and higher stellar mass is contributing to the broadening of the deficiency distribution towards larger deficiencies.

HIPASS study of southern ultradiffuse galaxies and low surface brightness galaxies

ABSTRACT We present results from an H i counterpart search using the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) for a sample of low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) and ultradiffuse galaxies (UDGs) identified from the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We aimed to establish the redshifts of the DES LSBGs to determine the UDG fraction and understand their properties. Out of 409 galaxies investigated, none were unambiguously detected in H i. Our study was significantly hampered by the high spectral rms of HIPASS and thus in this paper we do not make any strong conclusive claims but discuss the main trends and possible scenarios our results reflect. The overwhelming number of non-detections suggest that (a) Either all the LSBGs in the groups, blue or red, have undergone environment aided pre-processing and are H i deficient or the majority of them are distant galaxies, beyond the HIPASS detection threshold. (b) The sample investigated is most likely dominated by galaxies with H i masses typical of dwarf galaxies. Had there been Milky Way (MW) size (Re) galaxies in our sample, with proportionate H i content, they would have been detected, even with the limitations imposed by the HIPASS spectral quality. This leads us to infer that if some of the LSBGs have MW-size optical diameters, their H i content is possibly in the dwarf range. More sensitive observations using the SKA precursors in future may resolve these questions.

AlgoSCR: an algorithm for solar contamination removal from radio interferometric data

Hydrogen intensity mapping is a new field in astronomy that promises to make three-dimensional maps of the matter distribution of the Universe using the redshifted 21cm line of neutral hydrogen gas (HI). Several ongoing and upcoming radio interferometers, such as Tianlai, CHIME, HERA, HIRAX, etc., are using this technique. These instruments are designed to map large swaths of the sky by drift scanning over periods of many months. One of the challenges of the observations is that the daytime data are contaminated by strong radio signals from the Sun. In the case of Tianlai, this results in almost half of the measured data being unusable. We try to address this issue by developing an algorithm for solar contamination removal (AlgoSCR) from the radio data. The algorithm is based on an eigenvalue analysis of the visibility matrix and hence is applicable only to interferometers. We apply AlgoSCR to simulated visibilities, as well as real daytime data from the Tianlai dish array. The algorithm can reduce strong solar contamination by about 95 per cent without seriously affecting other weaker sky signals and thus makes the data usable for certain applications.

Emergence of the temperature–density relation in the low-density intergalactic medium

We examine the evolution of the phase diagram of the low-density intergalactic medium during the Epoch of Reionization in simulation boxes with varying reionization histories from the Cosmic Reionization on Computers project. The probability density function (PDF) of gas temperature at fixed density exhibits two clear modes: a warm and a cold temperature mode, corresponding to the gas inside and outside of ionized bubbles. We find that the transition between the two modes is ‘universal’ in the sense that its timing is accurately parametrized by the value of the volume-weighted neutral fraction for any reionization history. This ‘universality’ is more complex than just a reflection of the fact that ionized gas is warm and neutral gas is cold: it holds for the transition at a fixed value of gas density, and gas at different densities transitions from the cold to the warm mode at different values of the neutral fraction, reflecting a non-trivial relationship between the ionization history and the evolving gas density PDF. Furthermore, the ‘emergence’ of the tight temperature–density relation in the warm mode is also approximately ‘universally’ controlled by the volume-weighted neutral fraction for any reionization history. In particular, the ‘emergence’ of the temperature–density relation (as quantified by the rapid decrease in its width) occurs when the neutral fraction is 10 –4 ≲ X HI ≲ 10 –3 for any reionization history. Our results indicate that the neutral fraction is a primary quantity controlling the various properties of the temperature–density relation, regardless of reionization history.

Photonuclear cross sections for the 197 Au ⁢(𝛾, 𝑝⁢𝑛)⁢ 195⁢𝑚 Pt reaction near threshold

Platinum radioisotopes are of growing interest for targeted cancer therapy and diagnostic imaging because their decay delivers highly localized radiation doses in tissue, herewith enabling precise DNA damage through Auger-electron emission. Developing production technologies that provide platinum isotopes with high specific activity is essential in radioisotope therapy. Photonuclear reactions on stable nuclei offer a viable accelerator-based route for isotope production when supported by reliable cross-section data. We report photonuclear cross-section measurements for the 197 Au(γ, pn) 195m Pt reaction at incident γ-ray energies of 27, 29, and 31 MeV using the activation method. The measurements were performed by irradiating a stack of concentric-ring gold targets with a quasi-monoenergetic γ-ray beam provided by the High Intensity Gamma-ray Source (HI γS). The induced 195m Pt activity was quantified using off-line γ-ray spectroscopy. These data provide the first experimental constraints on the 197 Au(γ, pn) 195m Pt cross section in the near-threshold region. Furthermore, the comparison of the measured excitation function to PHITS and TALYS calculations indicates that the reaction becomes measurable only near 30 MeV and that substantially higher bremsstrahlung end-point energies are required for practically meaningful production.

Unidirectional multipulse helicity-independent all-optical switching in [Ni/Pt] based synthetic ferrimagnets

Nickel-platinum-based synthetic ferrimagnets (SFi's) are highly tunable and rare-earth-free materials that allow ultrafast all optical control of magnetism to be explored. This study considers a SFi composed of a ferromagnetic [Ni/Pt] multilayer and a ferromagnetic Co layer, separated by an Ir layer that mediates an antiferromagnetic coupling. Helicity-independent all optical switching (HI-AOS) between two antiparallel magnetization states is observed. AOS may be realized at increased temperature through reduction of the thickness of the Pt layers. Switching is unidirectional and has a strong dependence on the applied magnetic field history, which suggests the possible presence of a nanoscale magnetic texture that may be important in controlling AOS in SFi systems. Effective bias expansion for 21-cm cosmology in redshift space

A near-future detection of the 21-cm signal from the epoch of reionization will provide unique opportunities to probe the underlying cosmology, provided that such cosmological information can be extracted with precision. To this end, we further develop effective field theory (EFT) inspired techniques for the 21-cm brightness temperature field during the epoch of reionization, incorporating renormalized bias and a treatment of redshift space distortions. Notably, we confirm that in redshift space, measures of the 21-cm brightness, e.g., the power spectrum, should have irreducible contributions that lack a bias coefficient and therefore contain direct, astrophysics-free information about the cosmological density field; in this work, we study this effect beyond linear order. To validate our theoretical treatment, we fit the predicted EFT Fourier-space shapes to the thesan suite of hydrodynamical simulations of reionization at the field level, where the considerable number of modes prevents overfitting. We find agreement at the level of a few percent between the 21-cm power spectrum from the EFT fits and simulations over the wave number range k ≲ 0.8 h/Mpc and neutral fraction x HI ≳ 0.4, which is imminently measurable by the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array and future experiments. Furthermore, the ability of the EFT to describe the 21-cm signal extends to simulations that have different astrophysical prescriptions for reionization as well as simulations with interacting dark matter.

Persistent Room-Temperature Photodarkening in Cu-Doped β - Ga 2 O 3

β–Ga 2 O 3 is an ultrawide band gap semiconductor with emerging applications in power electronics. Here, the introduction of acceptor dopants yields semi-insulating substrates necessary for thin-film devices. In the present work, exposure of Cu-doped β–Ga 2 O 3 to UV light > 4 eV is shown to cause large, persistent photo-induced darkening at room temperature. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy indicates that light exposure converts Cu 2+ to Cu 3+ , a rare oxidation state that is responsible for the optical absorption. The photodarkening is accompanied by the appearance of O–H vibrational modes in the infrared spectrum. Hybrid function calculations show that Cu acceptors can favorably complex with hydrogen donors incorporated as interstitial (Hi) or substitutional (HO) defects. When Cu Ga –HO complexes absorb light, hydrogen is released, contributing to the observed Cu 3+ species and O–H modes.

Construction of the damped Ly⁢𝛼 absorber catalog for DESI DR2 Ly⁢𝛼 BAO

We present the Damped Ly⁢𝛼 Toolkit for automated detection and characterization of damped Ly⁢𝛼 absorbers (DLAs) in quasar spectra. Our method uses quasar spectral templates with and without absorption from intervening DLAs to reconstruct observed quasar forest regions. The best-fitting model determines whether a DLA is present while estimating the redshift and HI column density. With an optimized quality cut on detection significance (Δ⁢𝜒$^{2}_{𝑟}$ >0.03), the technique achieves an estimated 80% purity and 79% completeness when evaluated on simulated spectra with S/N>2 that are free of broad absorption lines (BALs). We provide a catalog containing candidate DLAs from the DLA Toolkit detected in DESI DR1 quasar spectra, of which 21 719 were found in S/N>2 spectra with predicted log 10 ⁡(𝑁 𝙷𝙸 )>20.3 and detection significance Δ⁢𝜒$^{2}_{𝑟}$ >0.03. We compare the Damped Ly⁢𝛼 Toolkit to two alternative DLA finders based on a convolutional neural network and Gaussian process models. We present a strategy for combining these three techniques to produce a high-fidelity DLA catalog from DESI DR2 for the Ly⁢𝛼 forest baryon acoustic oscillation measurement. The combined catalog contains 41 152 candidate DLAs with log 10 ⁡(𝑁 𝙷𝙸 )>20.3 from quasar spectra with S/N>2. We estimate this sample to be approximately 85% pure and 79% complete when BAL quasars are excluded.

Medium Voltage Converter Inductor Insulation Design Considering Grid Requirements

Medium voltage (MV) SiC devices facilitate direct (without 50-/60-Hz transformer) connection of the power electronics converter to the MV grid using simple topology. Compared to the insulation design of MV inductors that have been widely used in the power system, the insulation design of the MV converter filter inductors has new challenges. Particularly, the grid impact on insulation requirements on converter filter inductors is rarely discussed. This article introduces the insulation design of a grid-side filter inductor for a 13.8-kV power conditioning system converter. The grid insulation requirements, including the short-duration power frequency overvoltage and the lightning impulse voltage, are considered in the design. To meet the requirements, the layer-to-layer insulation, winding-to-core/ground insulation, the air gap discharge between the winding and the core, the local electric field, as well as the interturn transient voltage distribution are considered. Furthermore, the designed inductors are validated by the 46 kV (>1 min) dc hi-pot test, 12-kV ac partial discharge test, one-hour single-phase converter full rating test, as well as three-phase converter full rating test.
