Validation of the Public Radiation Exposure Calculation for the Incident at the National Institute of Standards and Technology Center for Neutron Research on February 3, 2021

The Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration Consequence Management Program was contacted by the Health Physics Chief of the National Institute of Standards and Technology Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) to review public radiation exposure calculations for an event that occurred on its Gaithersburg, Maryland, campus on February 3, 2021. Subject matter experts from the Nuclear Emergency Support Team (NEST) assets, specifically the Consequence Management Home Team (CMHT) and the National Atmospheric Release Advisory Center (NARAC), were selected to provide support. CMHT used three separate modeling codes to validate the results the scientists at NCNR calculated using the HotSpot model. The analyses were performed using NARAC’s in-house Lagrangian dispersion codes known as LODI and Aeolus, as well as the Turbo FRMAC software from Sandia National Laboratories. The team used parameters provided by the NCNR scientists regarding the site, applicable observable meteorological data, and environmental survey and sampling data to estimate public exposure. Each model estimated public dose at much less than 0.5 mrem. CMHT concurs with the NCNR public radiation exposure calculations which state that members of the public at the 400-meter boundary would have received a radiological dose of less than 0.5 mrem.

US HL-LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project: MQXFA11 shipping incident report

The truck transporting the MQXFA11 magnet from LBNL to BNL was involved in an accident on 7/20/22. It was rear ended by another truck. Drivers were not injured. The main hit took place on the right back corner. The truck with the MQXFA11 magnet was towed to a tow yard in Rockdale, IL (~50 min drive from Fermilab). Subsequently, it was moved on another truck and moved to Fermilab. Fermilab employees added 3 accelerometers on the crate before it was moved on the new truck and attended all loading/unloading operations at the tow yard and at FNAL. The magnet arrived at FNAL on July 28 th . Upon arrival a visual inspection was performed. Accelerometers were removed and shock data were analyzed. Electrical checkout and a metrology survey were carried out. Strain data were also collected from the fiber optics installed on two coils and compared with data obtained before shipment. This report presents a summary of results. More pictures and details can be found at: https://indico.fnal.gov/event/55698/

"Spiritus animalis": How Psychosocial Factors Affect Costs in Radiological Incidents [Slides]

The effect of psychosocial factors after a disaster is well acknowledged. They can manifest in many ways including policy decisions, increased medical problems due to stress, avoidance behavior, and lessened trust. These can have direct economic effects, including increased medical costs, decreased tourism, de facto boycotts of product, and delated remedial actions due to delayed decision making.

CEM MARS 6 Microwave Incident

A fire occurred in a CEM MARS 6 analytical microwave during microwave-assisted, acid digestion of a soil sample in a Research and Development (R&D) laboratory. The soil sample had been pretreated at 550°C for approximately 4 hours in a furnace prior to digesting in the microwave. Less than 1-gram aliquots of the pretreated soil sample were placed into separate microwave reaction vessels along with an acid mixture used for digestion. The microwave was used to facilitate digestion of the samples. Microwave reaction vessels were loaded with acid and soil samples, sealed in cassettes, and the cassettes placed onto a microwave carousel. A temperature probe that senses the reaction temperature during the run was inserted into the Reference Cell thermowell. The contents of the Reference Cell were identical to the contents of the other reaction cells. The researcher initiated the run and then left the laboratory to perform other work. Upon returning to check the digestion run, flames and smoke were observed originating from the microwave. The researcher exited the lab, immediate emergency actions were taken, and the local fire department responded and extinguished the fire. No personnel were injured, and no facility structural damage occurred. The affected microwave is a total loss. The fire investigation revealed the most credible cause of the fire is an incompatible temperature probe that did not accurately measure temperature of the liquid phase of the Reference sample.

Uncertainty Analysis of Inhalation Dose Coefficients for Nuclear Incident Response

This study addressed the need to characterize variability in inhalation dose coefficients due to uncertainties in respiratory tract deposition, systemic biokinetics, and physiological parameters. A Python-based implementation of the International Commission on Radiological Protection Publication 66 Human Respiratory Tract Model was developed called the Radiological Exposure Dose Calculator (REDCAL) to propagate parameter uncertainty.

Summary of Carbon Dioxide Pipeline Systems and Incident Data in North America

Pipelines are historically seen as the primary transportation mode for carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) streams in the context of carbon capture and storage (CCS) and oil and gas industries. Pipeline transmission of CO 2 over longer distances is regarded as most efficient and economical when the CO 2 is in the dense phase, i.e., in liquid or supercritical regime, due to transporting CO 2 in dense phase that allows for a smaller-diameter pipeline to move a given flow, which optimizes project cost.
