Neutral thermospheric temperature from ion concentration measurements

A technique for extracting information on neutral temperature from in situ F region measurements of O(+) and H(+) ion concentrations is analyzed and evaluated. Advantage is taken of the condition of charge-exchange equilibrium of these species in the neighborhood of 320 km to infer the associated relative abundances of neutral oxygen and hydrogen. Results are shown to be generally consistent with other concurrent in situ measurements.

Analysis of interface cracks in adhesively bonded lap shear joints, part 4

Conservation laws of elasticity for nonhomogeneous materials were developed and were used to study the crack behavior in adhesively bonded lap shear joints. By using these laws and the fundamental relationships in fracture mechanics of interface cracks, the problem is reduced to a pair of linear algebraic equations, and stress intensity solutions can be determined directly by information extracted from the far field. The numerical results obtained show that: (1) in the lap-shear joint with a given adherend, the opening-mode stress intensity factor, (K sub 1) is always larger than that of the shearing-mode (K sub 2); (2) (K sub 1) is not sensitive to adherent thickness abut (K sub 2) increases rapidly with increasing thickness; and (3) (K sub 1) and (K sub 2) increase simultaneously as the interfacial crack length increases.

The recognition of extended targets - SAR images for level and hilly terrain

Radar image simulation techniques are used to determine the character of SAR images of area-extensive targets, for the cases of flat underlying terrain and of moderate relief, with a view to the severity of elevation change effects on the detection and recognition of boundaries and shapes. The experiment, which demonstrated these effects on shapes and boundaries, was performed in order to establish Seasat-A SAR performance. Attention is given to the geometry/propagation effects in range perspective imaging that must be known for information extraction.

Interface cracks in adhesively bounded lap-shear joints

A study on the elastic behavior of interface cracks in adhesively bonded lap-shear joints is presented. The problem is investigated by using a recently developed method of analysis based on conservation laws in elasticity for nonhomogeneous solids and fundamental relationships in fracture mechanics of dissimilar materials. The formulation leads to a pair of linear algebraic equations in mixed-mode stress intensity factors. Singular crack-tip stress intensity solutions are determined directly by information extracted from the far field. Stress intensity factors and associated energy release rates are obtained for various cases of interest. Fundamental nature of the interfacial flaw behavior in lap-shear adhesive joints is examined in detail.

Photointerpretation of LANDSAT images

Learning objectives include: (1) developing a facility for applying conventional techniques of photointerpretation to small scale (satellite) imager; (2) promoting the ability to locate, identify, and interpret small natural and man made surface features in a LANDSAT image; (3) using supporting imagery, such as aerial and space photography, to conduct specific applications analyses; (4) learning to apply change detection techniques to recognize and explain transient and temporal events in individual or seasonal imagery; (5) producing photointerpretation maps that define major surface units, themes, or classes; (6) classifying or analyzing a scene for specific discipline applications in geology, agriculture, forestry, hyrology, coastal wetlands, and environmental pollution; and (7) evaluating both advantages and shortcomings in relying on the photointerpretive approach (rather than computer based analytical approach) for extracting information from LANDSAT data.

Exploitation of SAR data for measurement of ocean currents and wave velocities

Methods of extracting information on ocean currents and wave orbital velocities from SAR data by an analysis of the Doppler frequency content of the data are discussed. The theory and data analysis methods are discussed, and results are presented for both aircraft and satellite (SEASAT) data sets. A method of measuring the phase velocity of a gravity wave field is also described. This method uses the shift in position of the wave crests on two images generated from the same data set using two separate Doppler bands. Results of the current measurements are pesented for 11 aircraft data sets and 4 SEASAT data sets.

The SIR-B science plan

The Shuttle Imaging Radar-B (SIR-B) will be the third in a series of spaceborne SAR experiments conducted by NASA which began with the 1978 launch of SEASAT and continued with the 1981 launch of SIR-A. Like SEASAT and SIR-A, SIR-B will operate at L-band and will be horizontally polarized. However, SIR-B will allow digitally processed imagery to be acquired at selectable incidence angles between 15 and 60 deg, thereby permitting, for the first time, parametric studies of the effect of illumination geometry on SAR image information extraction. This document presents a science plan for SIR-B and serves as a reference for the types of geoscientific, sensor, and processing experiments which are possible.

Status and outlook for NASA's Land Remote Sensing Program

Both LANDSAT 2 and LANDSAT 3 are currently in operational status following recovery from technical problems. The LANDSAT D program continues NASA's R&D with the dual objectives of assessing the capabilities of the thematic mapper sensor and evaluating the requirements for an operational land observing system. LANDSAT D' will not be launched until LANDSAT D ceases operation, to provide data continuity through 1988. Future NASA remote sensing programs will continue to emphasize research, technology development, cooperative projects with end users of data and cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on transition to an operational land observing system. Technology development should extend the results of research to practical applications through improved ground data processing and information extraction techniques and development of new sensors such as the solid state multi-spectral linear array.

The relationship of sensor parameters to applications data analysis

A stochastic model for the data acquisition system in a multispectral scanner system, like the one utilized by the LANDSAT satellites, is presented. A list of noise sources which are known or presumed to have a significant effect in the information extraction process was constructed. Since the shot noise introduced by the photodetectors in the sensor system is signal level dependent, an atmospheric model was adopted which could adequately describe the amount of radiation that gets into the sensors based on the atmospheric transmittance. An analysis was carried out to find the output spectral statistics in terms of the input signal statistics and the system parameters. This was integrated into a set of FORTRAN programs that when supplied with, the class statistics, the noise levels introduced by the sensor system, the atmospheric transmittance, and the atmospheric path radiance, can be used to estimate the classification performance. In order to show the beneficts of this model a series of runs were performed in which the Thematic Mapper multispectral scanner was the system under consideration.

Image Analysis for Facility Siting: a Comparison of Lowand High-altitude Image Interpretability for Land Use/land Cover Mapping

For two test sites in Pennsylvania the interpretability of commercially acquired low-altitude and existing high-altitude aerial photography are documented in terms of time, costs, and accuracy for Anderson Level II land use/land cover mapping. Information extracted from the imagery is to be used in the evaluation process for siting energy facilities. Land use/land cover maps were drawn at 1:24,000 scale using commercially flown color infrared photography obtained from the United States Geological Surveys' EROS Data Center. Detailed accuracy assessment of the maps generated by manual image analysis was accomplished employing a stratified unaligned adequate class representation. Both 'area-weighted' and 'by-class' accuracies were documented and field-verified. A discrepancy map was also drawn to illustrate differences in classifications between the two map scales. Results show that the 1:24,000 scale map set was more accurate (99% to 94% area-weighted) than the 1:62,500 scale set, especially when sampled by class (96% to 66%). The 1:24,000 scale maps were also more time-consuming and costly to produce, due mainly to higher image acquisition costs.

Research advances in satellite-aided crop forecasting

The underlying concept of the technology is to estimate crop area and yield for specified regions and to multiply the two to obtain production at the regional level. The treatment here is mainly of area estimation. The approach to non-U.S. crop forecasting does not require ground observations. Among the problems hampering development are the need to estimate crop areas much earlier in the season and the need for information extraction methods that reduce the quantity and quality of the data required.

Three dimensional global modeling of atmospheric CO2

A model was developed to study the prospects of extracting information on carbon dioxide sources and sinks from observed CO2 variations. The approach uses a three dimensional global transport model, based on winds from a 3-D general circulation model (GCM), to advect CO2 noninteractively, i.e., as a tracer, with specified sources and sinks of CO2 at the surface. The 3-D model employed is identified and biosphere, ocean and fossil fuel sources and sinks are discussed. Some preliminary model results are presented.
