Systems and methods for water desalination using thermo-responsive ionic liquids regenerated by solar energy

This disclosure provides systems, methods, and apparatus related to water desalination. In one aspect, a method includes generating a diluted draw solution using forward osmosis. Wastewater is on a first side of an osmotic membrane and a draw solution is on a second side of the osmotic membrane. The draw solution comprises a mixture of water and an ionic liquid. Water in the wastewater diffuses across the osmotic membrane to the draw solution to form the diluted draw solution. The diluted draw solution is heated using a photonic heater to a temperature above a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the ionic liquid to phase separate the diluted draw solution into the ionic liquid and treated water.

Observing ion diffusion and reciprocating hopping motion in water

When an ionic crystal dissolves in solvent, the positive and negative ions associated with solvent molecules release from the crystal. However, the existing form, interaction, and dynamics of ions in real solution are poorly understood because of the substantial experimental challenge. We observed the diffusion and aggregation of polyoxometalate (POM) ions in water by using liquid phase transmission electron microscopy. Real-time observation reveals an unexpected local reciprocating hopping motion of the ions in water, which may be caused by the short-range polymerized bridge of water molecules. We find that ion oligomers, existing as highly active clusters, undergo frequent splitting, aggregation, and rearrangement in dilute solution. The formation and dissociation of ion oligomers indicate a weak counterion-mediated interaction. Furthermore, POM ions with tetrahedral geometry show directional interaction compared with spherical ions, which presents structure-dependent dynamics.

Evidence for Enhanced Tracer Diffusion in Densely Packed Interfacial Assemblies of Hairy Nanoparticles

Nearly monodisperse nanoparticle (NP) spheres attached to a nonvolatile ionic liquid surface were tracked by in situ scanning electron microscopy to obtain the tracer diffusion coefficient D tr as a function of the areal fraction Φ. The in situ technique resolved both tracer (gold) and background (silica) particles for ~1–2 min, highlighting their mechanisms of diffusion, which were strongly dependent on Φ. Structure and dynamics at low and moderate Φ paralleled those reported for larger colloidal spheres, showing an increase in order and a decrease in D tr by over 4 orders of magnitude. However, ligand interactions were more important near jamming, leading to different caging and jamming dynamics for smaller NPs. Finally, the normalized D tr at ultrahigh Φ depended on particle diameter and ligand molecular weight. Increasing the PEG molecular weight by a factor of 4 increased D tr by 2 orders of magnitude at ultrahigh Φ, indicating stronger ligand lubrication for smaller particles.

Come for predictions, stay for complexity: synthesis and experimental probing of ionic conductivity in Li 9 B 19 S 33

Lithium thioborates, despite their potential cost-effectiveness and low density, have received considerably less attention as solid electrolytes compared to their thiophosphate counterparts. A primary obstacle to their widespread investigation has been the inherent challenge in synthesizing single-phase materials. Computational studies have predicted several lithium thioborate phases exhibiting high ionic conductivity, with Li 9 B 19 S 33 notably predicted to reach 80 mS cm −1 . However, experimental validation of these theoretical predictions remains absent. This work addresses this gap by detailing a successful synthesis of the previously elusive Li 9 B 19 S 33 phase, facilitated by in situ temperature dependent powder X-ray diffraction. Our findings reveal the peritectic nature of phase formation, necessitating an excess of boron sulfide in the reaction mixture. We further present a comprehensive structural characterization of Li 9 B 19 S 33 utilizing spectroscopic techniques like NMR, FT-IR, and diffuse reflectance and report on its ionic conductivity. Solid-state 6 Li NMR line narrowing experiments revealed an ion mobility activation energy of 0.26 eV whereas activation energies derived from impedance spectroscopy measurements were significantly higher, resulting in lower than theoretically predicted ionic conductivity.

Self‐Assembled Membranes for High Ion Selectivity and Proton Blocking in Electrochemical Applications

Anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) with high anion/cation selectivity and exceptional proton-blocking ability are critical for applications such as bipolar membrane electrodialysis and electrochemical acid recovery. However, existing AEMs are constrained by a trade-off between ionic conductivity and selectivity, largely due to the intrinsic coupling between charge density and water content, and they suffer from excessive proton leakage facilitated by the Grotthuss hopping mechanism. In this work, poly(vinylimidazolium) membranes functionalized with long alkyl side chains that self-assemble into well-defined microphase-separated morphologies stabilized by hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions are reported. These unique structures localize the charge density along the polymer backbone to promote fast and selective ion transport. As a result, these membranes exhibit ionic conductivities and counter-ion diffusivities surpassing those of conventional homogeneous membranes, along with unprecedented counter-ion/co-ion selectivity and proton-blocking ability. These results establish a new design paradigm for high-performance, phase separated charged polymer membranes that overcome the limitations of homogeneous membranes, with broad implications for advanced electrochemical technologies.

Hydration size-dependent transport of ions across nanoporous graphene membranes

Nanoporous atomically-thin membranes are promising candidates for metal ion separations due to their chemical stability and high permeance and selectivity, but experimental evidence of the mechanisms responsible for ion-ion selectivity is sparse. Here, in this work, we measured the simultaneous diffusion of a dilute mixture of ten different Group I, Group II, and rare earth cations in a salt background across nanoporous graphene (NPG) membranes with sub-nanometer pores. The membranes exhibited ion-ion selectivity, including between similarly-charged ions. Cation transport was governed primarily by the hydrated ion size that was consistent with continuum models of ion diffusion, with additional influence of the ionic charge. Selectivity enhancement was achieved by modifying ion sizes using an ion-selective complexing agent. Our study provides evidence of the importance of size-sieving and electrostatic mechanisms governing ion transport across NPG, and allows for quantitative prediction of transport rates to guide future development of ion-selective atomically-thin membranes.

Effect of microphase separation on the limiting current density in hybrid organic-inorganic copolymer electrolytes

Hybrid organic-inorganic block copolymer electrolytes are of interest to enable batteries containing lithium metal anodes. The conductive block is a standard polymer electrolyte of poly(ethylene oxide) and the mechanically rigid block is an inorganic poly(acryloisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane) polymer. Here, in this paper, we compare a poly(acryloisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane)-b-poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(acryloisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane) (POSS-PEO-POSS) triblock copolymer and a poly(ethylene oxide)-b- poly(acryloisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane) (PEO-POSS) diblock copolymer mixed with lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide salt. We have experimentally measured the limiting current density in lithium symmetric cells containing hybrid organic-inorganic electrolytes at 90 °C. The cells were polarized at a large range of applied current density. The diblock copolymer electrolyte exhibited a clear plateau in cell potential at all current densities below the limiting current density. At low applied current density, the triblock copolymer electrolyte also exhibited a clear plateau in cell potential. At currents approaching the limiting current density, the triblock copolymer electrolyte exhibited an underdamped potential profile. The cell potential did not reach a plateau at current densities above the limiting current in both systems. The diblock and triblock copolymer electrolytes were fully characterized using electrochemical methods to determine the ionic conductivity, cation current fraction, salt diffusion coefficient, and open circuit voltage as a function of salt concentration. Cell potential and salt concentration as functions of position in the cell at various current densities were calculated using Newman's concentrated solution theory. The theoretical limiting current density was calculated to be the current density at which salt is depleted at the cathode. We see quantitative agreement between experimental measurements and theoretical predictions for the limiting current density in the diblock copolymer electrolyte which has an ordered structure at all salt concentrations, while the experimental limiting current density is lower than the theoretical prediction for the triblock copolymer electrolyte, which exhibits a disordered morphology at high salt concentrations.

Galvanostatic Intermittent Titration Technique Reinvented: Part II. Experiments

Following a critical review of the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique in Part I, here we experimentally demonstrate how to extract chemical diffusivity with a modified method. We prepare dense bulk samples that ensure diffusion-limitation. We utilize the scaling with $\sqrt{{t}_{\mathrm{relax}}+\tau }-\sqrt{{t}_{\mathrm{relax}}}$ (trelax: relaxation time; τ: pulse duration), avoiding problems with composition-dependent overpotentials. The equilibrium Nernst voltage is measured separately using small porous particles. This separation between the diffusion measurement and the titration procedure is critical for performing each measurement in a reliable setting. We report the chemical diffusion coefficients of LixNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 and their activation energy. We extract ionic conductivity and compare it with total conductivity to confirm ion-limitation in chemical diffusion. The measurements suggest that the time scale for diffusion in typical Li-ion battery particles could be much shorter than that of the intercalation/deintercalation processes at the particle surface (Biot number less than 0.1).

Air Dehumidification using Ionic Liquid-Based Fiber Bundle Membrane Contactor

Air dehumidification is essential since excess moisture in the buildings causes discomfort to the occupants, encourages the production of air pathogens such as mold or mildew, and causes corrosion and rotting that degrade building materials. Existing moisture removal processes are mainly focused on condensation and desiccant (liquid or solid) techniques with direct contact between air and desiccant. However, these methods are energy-intensive, or desiccant might be lost or cause corrosion in the process. The main objective of this study is to investigate an ionic liquid-based liquid desiccant absorber based on a membrane fiber bundle. The novel system consists of membrane contactors containing bundles of 10,000 polypropylene fibers. The fiber bundles have 0.3 micron diameter, with ionic liquid flowing inside, and air flowing outside. The fibers provide a high contact area among phases: 1.4 m2 contact surface area in a 0.00015 m3 volume. The ionic liquid as a sorbent stipulates the selectivity for air, prevents the loss of solvent in the operation due to negligible volatility, provides fast diffusion due to low viscosity compared to common ionic liquids, and has high affinity and solubility in water. The dehumidification capacity of the membrane technology was experimentally investigated. The experimental results show that the ionic-liquid based membrane system can effectively remove excess moisture from the air. The novel fiber bundle dehumidification system has a system volume of 0.00798 m3 (7.98 L) and active heat and mass transfer surface area of 8.4 m2. It achieved an average dehumidification of 320 ± 25 W with a volumetric air flowrate of 3.1 m3/min (108 ft3/min).

Strongly Correlated Ion Dynamics in Plastic Ionic Crystals and Polymerized Ionic Liquids

Understanding the mechanisms controlling ionic conductivity is critical for the development of the next generation of batteries and supercapacitors. This paper discusses the significant role played by ionic correlations in conductivity of concentrated ionic systems. Our studies of an organic ionic plastic crystal reveal that correlations in ions dynamics suppress conductivity by 25–100 times in comparison to the expected uncorrelated ionic conductivity estimated from the Nernst–Einstein relationship. Furthermore, additional analysis also demonstrates that ionic correlations suppress conductivity in polymerized ionic liquids and gel by ~10 times. Thus, ionic correlations, usually neglected in many studies, play a very important role in conductivity of concentrated ionic systems. These results cannot be explained by a diffusion of ion pairs because all these systems are essentially single ion conductors. In contrast, strongly correlated motions of mobile ions with the same charge (cation–cation or anion–anion correlations) are the major mechanism suppressing the ionic conductivity in these systems. Finally, on the basis of these results, we emphasize that charge transport rather than ion diffusion is critical for electrolyte performance and suggest the potential design of plastic crystals and polymer electrolytes with enhanced ionic conductivity.

Quantitative Measurement of Li-Ion Concentration and Diffusivity in Solid-State Electrolyte

Here, we present a quantitative method to measure the concentration and diffusivity of Li ion in a solid-state electrolyte with nanoscale depth resolution. We designed a standard sample with different depths of trenches and used time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, three-dimensional (3D) optical microscopy, and electrochemical strain microscopy to obtain effective Li-ion concentration and the corresponding diffusivity as a function of depth. As a result, we verified the dependence of electromechanical strain induced by ionic oscillation on mobile-ion concentration. We also showed the diffusivity change as a function of effective concentration and discussed the difference in diffusivity near the surface and inside the bulk. Our method can be widely used for electromechanical strain in various ionic conductors, rendering our technique universal for quantitative analysis of ionic dynamics at a multiscale.

Solute diffusion in liquid metals

A gas model of diffusion in liquid metals is presented. In this model, ions of liquid metals are assumed to behave like the molecules in a dense gas. Diffusion coefficient of solute is discussed with reference to its mass, ionic size, and pair potential. The model is applied to the case of solute diffusion in liquid silver. An attempt was made to predict diffusion coefficients of solutes with reasonable accuracy.

Tuning Transport via Interaction Strength in Cationic Conjugated Polyelectrolytes

Tuning polymer-ion interaction strength is critical for balancing ion solvation and transport in solid polymer electrolytes for battery applications. In mixed Li + /electron conducting systems for improved battery binders, the design space is further complicated by seemingly opposing design rules for electron and ion conducting polymers. Conjugated polymers functionalized with cationic side chains have demonstrated high ionic conductivity, lithium transport, and electronic conductivity by combining long-range polymer ordering with diffuse ion interactions. Herein, we demonstrate a family of mixed conducting polythiophenes functionalized with a range of cationic side chains, namely imidazolium, trimethylammonium, and ammonium groups. The strength of ionic interactions and structure of the side chains govern lithium-selective transport, resulting in high Li + conductivity (~10 –4 S/cm at 80 °C) and electronic conductivity. The more diffuse imidazolium ion affords labile ionic interactions, resulting in higher lithium transference than the other cations studied. Electronic conductivity is also higher in the imidazolium system, stemming from the ability of the planar side chains to stack while also accommodating the bulky TFSI – counterions. Finally, these results demonstrate the importance of interaction strength in ion transport while also indicating that the physical structure of the side chain has an impact on electronic conduction. The imidazolium group strikes a balance, achieving superior properties across all metrics.

Exceptionally Fast Ion Diffusion in Block Copolymer-Based Porous Carbon Fibers

Confined ionic liquids in hydrophilic porous media have disrupted lattices and can be divided into two layers: An immobile ion layer adheres to the pore surfaces, and an inner layer exhibits faster mobility than the bulk. In this work, we report the first study of ionic liquids confined in block copolymer-based porous carbon fibers (PCFs) synthesized from polyacrylonitrile-block-polymethyl methacrylate (PAN-b-PMMA). The PCFs contain a network of unimodal mesopores of 13.6 nm in diameter and contain more hydrophilic surface functional groups than previously studied porous carbon. Elastic neutron scattering shows no freezing point for 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([BMIM]BF 4 ) confined in PCFs down to 20 K. Quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) is used to measure the diffusion of [BMIM]BF 4 confined in PCFs, which, surprisingly, is 7-fold faster than in the bulk. The unprecedentedly high ion diffusion remarks that PCFs hold exceptional potential for use in electrochemical catalysis, energy conversion, and storage.

Migration Kinetics of Surface Ions in Oxygen-Deficient Perovskite During Topotactic Transitions

Oxygen diffusivity and surface exchange kinetics underpin the ionic, electronic, and catalytic functionalities of complex multivalent oxides. Towards understanding and controlling the kinetics of oxygen transport in emerging technologies, it is highly desirable to reveal the underlying lattice dynamics and ionic activities related to oxygen variation. In this study, the evolution of oxygen content is identified in real-time during the progress of a topotactic phase transition in La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3-δ epitaxial thin films, both at the surface and throughout the bulk. Using polarized neutron reflectometry, a quantitative depth profile of the oxygen content gradient is achieved, which, alongside atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, uniquely reveals the formation of a novel structural phase near the surface. Surface-sensitive X-ray spectroscopies further confirm a significant change of the electronic structure accompanying the transition. The anisotropic features of this novel phase enable a distinct oxygen diffusion pathway in contrast to conventional observation of oxygen motion at moderate temperatures. The results provide insights furthering the design of solid oxygen ion conductors within the framework of topotactic phase transitions.

Stabilization of garnet/Li interphase by diluting the electronic conductor

The high interfacial resistance and lithium (Li) dendrite growth are two major challenges for solid-state Li batteries (SSLBs). The lack of understanding on the correlations between electronic conductivity and Li dendrite formation limits the success of SSLBs. Here, by diluting the electronic conductor from the interphase to bulk Li during annealing of the aluminium nitride (AlN) interlayer, we changed the interphase from mixed ionic/electronic conductive to solely ionic conductive, and from lithiophilic to lithiophobic to fundamentally understand the correlation among electronic conductivity, Li dendrite, and interfacial resistance. During the conversion-alloy reaction between AlN and Li, the lithiophilic and electronic conductive Li x Al diffused into Li, forming a compact lithiophobic and ionic conductive Li 3 N, which achieved an ultrahigh critical current density of 2.6/14.0 mA/cm 2 in the time/capacity-constant mode, respectively. The fundamental understanding on the effect of interphase nature on interfacial resistance and Li dendrite suppression will provide guidelines for designing high-performance SSLBs.
