Radiation Transport Tools for Space Applications: A Review

This slide presentation contains a brief discussion of nuclear transport codes widely used in the space radiation community for shielding and scientific analyses. Seven radiation transport codes that are addressed. The two general methods (i.e., Monte Carlo Method, and the Deterministic Method) are briefly reviewed.

Photoneutron Production Using an Electron Linear Accelerator for Applications in Neutron Imaging

Photoneutron production is possible using an electron linear accelerator and a target capable of generating photonuclear reactions. A short pulse neutron source can be useful for neutron imaging dynamic experiments. This study is aimed at the feasibility of photoneutron production using a 20 MeV electron linear accelerator and tungsten and depleted uranium targets of various thicknesses. MCNP6 (Monte Carlo N-Particle) code will be used to develop a computational model to estimate total neutron yield, and this will be verified at the Idaho State University’s Accelerator Center. After verification of the neutron yield and energy spectra, an additional MCNP6 model will be developed to analyze the neutron imaging processes. This study will potentially prove it is possible to conduct multi-mode imaging experiments on the anticipated Scorpius electron linear accelerator at the Nevada National Security Sites.

Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport Performance of Predicting Digital Radiographic IQI Inspection

The identification of porosity, geometric noncompliance, and other defect types are critical to the qualification of materials and components. X-ray radiographic nondestructive testing is a common industrial inspection method for process quality control and component qualification and certification. Digital radiography provides a quick and efficient alternative when compared to traditional film-based inspection. The quality of radiographic inspection is dependent on equipment specifications, such as the source spot size and detector pixel size, and the specific parameters selected for use for the radiographic technique. To evaluate if an x-ray system and technique is sufficient for a given requirement, a radiographic image quality indicator (IQI) can be used. Radiographic IQIs in hard to machine materials or hard to manufacture defects can be time consuming and expensive to manufacture. This study was conducted to evaluate current Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) x-ray imaging systems with a custom tantalum IQI and using Monte Carlo simulations to predict the performance of future systems. The tantalum IQI was tested using a Siefert Isovolt 420 keV x-ray tube with a Perkin Elmer XRD 1611 flat panel with 100-micron pixels. Using the Monte Carlo N-Particle transport software, the radiographic tally was used to simulate the photon flux through an identical tantalum IQI. These simulations provided a benchmark as to the best theoretical identification on a given system using our tantalum IQI. The simulations were refined to match SRNL’s current systems’ noise levels, leading to confidence in their ability to predict the performance of other systems that may be purchased and deployed in the future at the Savannah River Site. Future studies will be conducted to prove this research can be extended to artificially evaluate the ability for systems to identify critical defect sizes through x-ray radiographic inspection, drastically reducing the cost and time burdens of producing high-fidelity radiographic test articles.

Updates to the HTR-PROTEUS HALEU Benchmark Using Modern Analysis Methodologies

The HTR-PROTEUS IRPhEP Handbook benchmarks represent some of the highest quality benchmarks available for systems with TRISO-HALEU fuel, graphite pebbles, graphite reflector, and high neutron leakage. Nevertheless, significant variability in computed eigenvalue results was encountered in HTR-PROTEUS configurations that are relevant for transportation configurations. The team will investigate the source of these variabilities in the original benchmark. In addition, the team will investigate the HTR-PROTEUS subcritical measurements, kinetics data, and potential criticality effects from the introduction of hydrogen in the system (water ingress). The project will generate a benchmark evaluation of additional HTR-PROTEUS measurements that can significantly increase the value of these criticality benchmarks in testing nuclear codes and data to support transportation validation needs for industry and the U.S. NRC.
