Multiplex data bus techniques

Multiplex data bus subsystem for improving reliability and reducing weight of space shuttle avionics system

Frost, W. O.

A frequency division multiplex technique for transmitting commands

Reliable random access multiplexer is controlled and operated over two twisted-pair telephone lines at distances of 5.6 to 8.0 km with control signals of less than 10 volts rms. Technique adapts to any process or environmental control system where data source is necessary.

Analog tree-organized multiplexer

An analog tree-organized multiplexer (ATOM) which is intended for use in the telemetry system of an interplanetary spacecraft is designed. The ATOM will be fabricated by a monolithic, dielectric isolation process, and will contain silicon junction field effect transistors (JFET) as the active elements. The effect of the radiation environment on the performance of the ATOM is analyzed. The result indicates that the expected radiation environment will cause only minor changes in the preradiation characteristics of ATOM. The JFET in the ATOM is designed to meet the electrical requirements when fabricated by either the double poly-dielectric isolation process or the raised dielectric isolation process. The effect of the heat treatment required for the dielectric isolation process on the diffusion profile of the JFET is described. The layout of the ATOM circuit for fabrication by either the double poly or raised dielectric isolation process is also given.

Design, development, fabrication and delivery of register and multiplexer units

Two complementary MOS monolithic chip types were developed, which contain a register and multiplexer unit to be used in the central processing unit of a digital computer. The partition of the logic into a chip size consistent with the characteristics of the packages is discussed. The logic was implemented by specially configured circuitry designed to layout, as well as to optimize, performance by taking advantage of the properties of CMOS logic. Of several approaches considered for generating LSI CMOS arrays, the CMOS standard cell array design technique was selected. These design automation techniques were used to generate the chip layout, art work and working master plates, followed by the fabrication and testing of the two chip types. Sixty functional LSI arrays were delivered.

Tetrad bubble domain chip arrangement for multiplexing

Rotating magnetic field of bubble domain memory is used to obtain time-division multiplexing of bubble domain circuits into quadrants. Memory bits are assigned on bit-per-chip rather than bit-per-module basis; power is reduced by circulating only portion of bubbles at a time.

A study of multiplex data bus techniques for the space shuttle

A comprehensive technology base for the design of a multiplexed data bus subsystem is provided. Extensive analyses, both analytical and empirical, were performed. Subjects covered are classified under the following headings: requirements identification and analysis; transmission media studies; signal design and detection studies; synchronization, timing, and control studies; user-subsystem interface studies; operational reliability analyses; design of candidate data bus configurations; and evaluation of candidate data bus designs.

Television multiplexing system

A television multiplexing system which includes a circuit that inserts a digital codes sync signal and a digital code into a video signal for identifying the channel is described. The digital sync signal and the digital coded signals are generated by a single crystal controlled clock so that they are always in synchronism with each other. In demultiplexing the signals are utilized for shifting the digital coded signals into a shift register. The shift register, in turn, activates a decoder according to the code stored in the shift register for selecting the proper recording disk or receiver for storing the video signal.

Multiplex imaging with multiple-pinhole cameras

When making photographs in X rays or gamma rays with a multiple-pinhole camera, the individual images of an extended object such as the sun may be allowed to overlap. Then the situation is in many ways analogous to that in a multiplexing device such as a Fourier spectroscope. Some advantages and problems arising with such use of the camera are discussed, and expressions are derived to describe the relative efficacy of three exposure/postprocessing schemes using multiple-pinhole cameras.

Solar X-ray photography with multiplex pin-hole camera

A scatter-hole X-ray camera has been designed and flown in a rocket to measure solar X radiation. Its distinguishing feature is that many single pin-hole images are allowed to overlap - a multiplexing approach that saves space, gives practical signal-to-fog ratio, and requires special object reconstruction techniques. It was possible to reconstruct the appearance of the dominant source of solar emission on the day of rocket flight with better than one arc minute resolution. The coronal X-ray region had the same general shape and intensity distribution as the associated calcium K-line region.

Study of the true performance limits of the Astrometric Multiplexing Area Scanner (AMAS)

The Astrometric Multiplexing Area Scanner (AMAS) is an instrument designed to perform photoelectric long focus astrometry of small fields. Modulation of a telescope focal plane with a rotating Ronchi ruling produces a frequency modulated signal from which relative positions and magnitudes can be extracted. Evaluation instrumental precision, accuracy and resolution characteristics with respect to a variety of instrumental and cosmical parameters indicates 1.5 micron precision and accuracy for single stars under specific conditions. This value decreases for increased number of field stars, particularly for fainter stars.

Application of ERTS-1 and multiplexed SLAR imagery for the study of flooded shorelines

The major purpose of this study is to determine the accuracy of visual interpretations of data from two different sensors (ERTS-1; ERIM's multiplexed SLAR) for the study of flooded shorelines. Uncomplicated and primarily visual interpretation techniques are employed. These methods are considered most readily available to officials of local and small regional organizations who may need rapid reconnaissance mapping and information for the organization of disaster relief. Assumptions concerning the timely receipt of such remotely sensed data by those directing the relief have been made. Generally, it is determined that ERTS-1 and SLAR data are complementary, especially with respect to the interpretation of urban or built-up areas which are flooded, and together they can provide the necessary information for guiding relief operations.
