Spin waves in YIG based magnonic networks: Design and technological aspects

Microwaveguides for spin waves based on yttrium iron garnet films and cross-like structures built on such waveguides are experimentally studied. Additionally, effects of the waveguides geometry, location of the microantennas for excitation and detection of the spin waves, and geometry of the waveguides junctions on the spin wave excitation and propagation efficiency are discussed.

Enhancement of microwave to optical spin-based quantum transduction via a magnon mode

We propose a method for converting single microwave photons to single optical sideband photons based on spinful impurities in magnetic materials. This hybrid system is advantageous over previous proposals because (i) the implementation allows much higher transduction rates (10 3 times faster at the same optical pump Rabi frequency) than state-of-the-art devices, (ii) high-efficiency transduction is found to happen in a significantly larger space of device parameters (in particular, over 1 GHz microwave detuning), and (iii) it does not require mode volume matching between optical and microwave resonators. We identify the needed magnetic interactions as well as potential materials systems to enable this speed up using erbium dopants for telecom compatibility. This is an important step towards realizing high-fidelity entangling operations between remote qubits and will provide additional control of the transduction through perturbation of the magnet.

Open giant magnons on LLM geometries

We compute sigma model solutions for rigidly rotating open strings suspended between giant gravitons in general LLM geometries. These solutions are confined to the LLM plane. These all have a dispersion relation for Δ - J that is consistent with saturation of a BPS bound of the centrally extended spin chain. For the special case of circularly symmetric LLM geometries, we can further evaluate the amount of angular momentum J carried by these strings. This quantity diverges for string configurations that try to move between different “coloring regions” in the LLM plane. All of these quantities have a perturbative expansion in the t’Hooft coupling. For the strings suspended between AdS giants, we can compute in field theory the leading result of J carried by the string via an analytic continuation of the SU(2) result, with the help of the Bethe Ansatz for the SL(2) sector. We thus provide additional information on how the radial direction of AdS arises from (open) spin chain calculations.

A magnon band analysis of GdRu 2 Si 2 in the field-polarized state

Understanding the formation of skyrmions in centrosymmetric materials is a problem of fundamental and technological interest. GdRu 2 Si 2 is a candidate material that hosts a variety of multi-Q magnetic phases, including in zero-field. Here, inelastic neutron scattering is used to measure the spin excitations in the field-polarized phase of GdRu 2 Si 2 . Linear spin wave theory and a method of interaction invariant path analysis are used to derive a Hamiltonian accounting for the spectra. The Hamiltonian, dominated by bilinear (Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida) Heisenberg exchange, compares favorably to ab initio calculations. Dipolar interactions are a secondary energy scale to consider, with J D.D ~ 0.05 J RKKY . However, it is shown that in the field-polarized phase the dipolar interactions ‘self screen’ so that their effect is largely suppressed. No specific evidence for higher-order exchange is found. These aspects are discussed in the context of the lower field multi-Q states and the anisotropy of the system.

Bond-dependent anisotropy and magnon decay in cobalt-based Kitaev triangular antiferromagnet

Following tremendous success of the graphene-derived fundamental and applied research, the magnetic van der Waals materials that can be cleaved into monolayer two-dimensional atomic crystals have emerged as a new platform in the studies of low-dimensional physics and in the design of artificial heterostructures with novel properties. Because of that, the family of dihalides and trihalides of the 3d transition group receive a strong renewed interest. Together with our experimental collaborators, we have investigated the novel dynamical properties of one of such promising material CoI 2 , and demonstrated that spin excitations in it are prone to substantial breakdown and complex level repulsion, the important quantum effects whose theoretical understanding has been significantly advanced by our group in the last two decades. Both phenomena are dramatically revealed by experiments and verified by the theory in our joint study, published in Nature Physics. Altogether, our results pave the way toward a new research direction for the magnetic van der Waals materials.

Ice sculpting: An artificial spin ice Tutorial on controlling microstate and geometry for magnonics and neuromorphic computing

Artificial spin ice, arrays of strongly interacting nanomagnets, are complex magnetic systems with many emergent properties, rich microstate spaces, intrinsic physical memory, high-frequency dynamics in the GHz range, and compatibility with a broad range of measurement approaches. This Tutorial article aims to provide the foundational knowledge needed to understand, design, develop, and improve the dynamic properties of artificial spin ice. Special emphasis is placed on introducing the theory of micromagnetics, which describes the complex dynamics within these systems, along with their design, fabrication methods, and standard measurement and control techniques. The article begins with a review of the historical background, introducing the underlying physical phenomena and interactions that govern artificial spin ice. We then explore the standard experimental techniques used to prepare the microstate space of the nanomagnetic array and to characterize magnetization dynamics, both in artificial spin ice and more broadly in ferromagnetic materials. Finally, we introduce the basics of neuromorphic computing applied to the case of artificial spin ice systems with a goal to help researchers new to the field grasp these exciting new developments.
