Operating in the age of NASTRAN

The history of the development of the NASTRAN computer program, a general purpose finite element code for structural analysis, is described. The need for research programs to improve analysis of structures, and the writing of a computer program to give numerical solutions for shell behavior, were the impetus for the program design. The use of finite elements to obtain engineering solutions was introduced. The architecture, solution structure, DMAP language, decomposition technique for banded matrices with active columns, general purpose plotter, engineering data inputs, elastic element routines, programmer manuals, of NASTRAN's system design are described.

Recent improvements and enhancements to NASTRAN

Several improvements and enhancements recently made to NASTRAN are described. Some of the more important features are: streamlined rigid formats; improved rigid formats; changes related to plotting; checking of required PARAM bulk data cards; checkpoint/restart capability; unsorted and sorted bulk data deck echo; automatic output of the DMAP source listing; elimination of link switching caused by use of utility modules; paging the NASTRAN output; processing of mixed record data blocks by INPUT2/OUTPUT2 modules; module execute flag included in the OSCAR listing; and use of the multiple XDMAP cards in the DMAP. It is concluded that these changes increase the usefulness of the program.

Solution of axisymmetric fluid structure interaction problems with NASTRAN

The solution of axisymmetric acoustic fluid structure interaction problems, employing the NASTRAN computer program is presented. A previously developed 3-D Cartesian Coordinates pressure element formulation is adapted especially for axisymmetric elements. Analogous to the 3-D Cartesian Coordinate predecessor, the fluid portion of the problem is modeled with finite elements wherein one of the displacement components serves as a dummy variable for the pressure unknowns. Two alternatives for implementation of the analogy are presented: (1) an approximate method by which dummy values of G, and nu are used to approximately invoke the analogy wherein the accuracy of the approximation is made as close as desired to the proper analogy within an arbitrary small parameter epsiton; (2) an exact method whereby the NASTRAN FORTRAN coding is slightly changed to invoke the analogy exactly. Comparison of the finite element solution to the exact solution to the same problem is given.

On restarts in NASTRAN

The checkpoint/restart capability available in NASTRAN is very sophisticated. Improvements and enhancements to this capability made with a view to increasing its efficiency and usefulness are considered. Some important features resulting from these changes are discussed. In particular, the different types of restarts available in NASTRAN are described and how they are handled both in the rigid format and DMAP environments explained. The output to restart runs are also illustrated.

NASTRAN NASTPLT Plotting Post Processor

NASTRAN NASTPLT Plotting Post Processor reads NASTRAN-generated NASTPLT plot files, checks file contents for validity and translates NASTPLT plot commands into appropriate calls to plotting routines for either CALCOMP Tektronix PLOT10, or Versatec plotting systems.

NASTRAN structural model for the large 64-meter antenna pedestal. Part 2: Improved model

Static analysis and a computer structural model for the large 64-m antenna pedestal are developed using the MSC version of the NASTRAN program. This improved pedestal model includes the launch areas and the actual pressure pattern of the oil under the hydrostatic bearing pad. The results obtained from the new improved model have indicated that the deflections due to pad loads are in good agreement with field measurements. The top surface deflection of the pedestal obtained from the NASTRAN model is used as an input to the oil film computer program to determine the minimum oil film thickness under the pad.

Implementation of elastic-plastic structural analysis into NASTRAN

Elastic-plastic analytic capabilities were incorporated into the NASTRAN program. The present implementation includes a general rigid format and additional bulk data cards as well as to two new modules. The modules are specialized to include only perfect plasticity of the CTRMEN and CROD elements but can easily be expanded to include other plasticity theories and elements. The practical problem of an elastic-plastic analysis of a ship's bracket connection is demonstrated and compared to an equivalent analysis using Grumman's PLANS program. The present work demonstrates the feasibility of incorporating general elastic-plastic capabilities into NASTRAN.

Elastic-plastic analysis of annular plate problems using NASTRAN

The plate elements of the NASTRAN code are used to analyze two annular plate problems loaded beyond the elastic limit. The first problem is an elastic-plastic annular plate loaded externally by two concentrated forces. The second problem is stressed radially by uniform internal pressure for which an exact analytical solution is available. A comparison of the two approaches together with an assessment of the NASTRAN code is given.

Nonlinear displacement analysis of advanced propeller structures using NASTRAN

The steady state displacements of a rotating advanced turboprop are computed using the geometrically nonlinear capabilities of COSMIC NASTRAN Rigid Format 4 and MSC NASTRAN Solution 64. A description of the modified Newton-Raphson algorithm used by Solution 64 and the iterative scheme used by Rigid Format 4 is provided. A representative advanced turboprop, SR3, was used for the study. Displacements for SR3 are computed for rotational speeds up to 10,000 rpm. The results show Solution 64 to be superior for computating displacements of flexible rotating structures. This is attributed to its ability to update the displacement dependent centrifugal force during the solution process.

Seismic Analysis Capability in NASTRAN

Seismic analysis is a technique which pertains to loading described in terms of boundary accelerations. Earthquake shocks to buildings is the type of excitation which usually comes to mind when one hears the word seismic, but this technique also applied to a broad class of acceleration excitations which are applied at the base of a structure such as vibration shaker testing or shocks to machinery foundations. Four different solution paths are available in NASTRAN for seismic analysis. They are: Direct Seismic Frequency Response, Direct Seismic Transient Response, Modal Seismic Frequency Response, and Modal Seismic Transient Response. This capability, at present, is invoked not as separate rigid formats, but as pre-packaged ALTER packets to existing RIGID Formats 8, 9, 11, and 12. These ALTER packets are included with the delivery of the NASTRAN program and are stored on the computer as a library of callable utilities. The user calls one of these utilities and merges it into the Executive Control Section of the data deck to perform any of the four options are invoked by setting parameter values in the bulk data.

NPLOT: an Interactive Plotting Program for NASTRAN Finite Element Models

The NPLOT (NASTRAN Plot) is an interactive computer graphics program for plotting undeformed and deformed NASTRAN finite element models. Developed at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, the program provides flexible element selection and grid point, ASET and SPC degree of freedom labelling. It is easy to use and provides a combination menu and command driven user interface. NPLOT also provides very fast hidden line and haloed line algorithms. The hidden line algorithm in NPLOT proved to be both very accurate and several times faster than other existing hidden line algorithms. A fast spatial bucket sort and horizon edge computation are used to achieve this high level of performance. The hidden line and the haloed line algorithms are the primary features that make NPLOT different from other plotting programs.
