Minimizing the diffusivity difference between vacancies and interstitials in multi-principal element alloys

Interstitial atoms usually diffuse much faster than vacancies, which is often the root cause for the ineffective recombination of point defects in metals under irradiation. Here, via ab initio modeling of single-defect diffusion behavior in the equiatomic NiCoCrFe(Pd) alloy, we demonstrate an alloy design strategy that can reduce the diffusivity difference between the two types of point defects. The two diffusivities become almost equal after substituting the NiCoCrFe base alloy with Pd. The underlying mechanism is that Pd, with a much larger atomic size (hence larger compressibility) than the rest of the constituents, not only heightens the activation energy barrier ( E a ) for interstitial motion by narrowing the diffusion channels but simultaneously also reduces E a for vacancies due to less energy penalty required for bond length change between the initial and the saddle states. Our findings have a broad implication that the dynamics of point defects can be manipulated by taking advantage of the atomic size disparity, to facilitate point-defect annihilation that suppresses void formation and swelling, thereby improving radiation tolerance.

Tuning spin–orbit coupling in (6,5) single-walled carbon nanotube doped with sp 3 defects

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) containing sp 3 defects are a promising class of optoelectronic materials with bright photoluminescence and demonstrated single-photon emission. Using density functional theory simulations, complemented by measurements, we investigate the electronic structure of a series of quantum defects attached to (6,5) SWCNT with the goal of tuning the spin–orbit coupling by introduction of a heavy atom in the defect structure. We characterize the ground state electronic and spin properties of four synthesized and three potential defects on the tube and find that all of the synthesized defects considered introduce a localized midgap defect-centered state containing a single electron, ≈0.2–0.3 eV above the valence band. The spin density is located at the sp 3 defect site with negligible spin–orbit coupling even with the presence of a Pd atom. Three additional functional groups were tested via computation to increase spin localization near the metal, thereby increasing spin–orbit coupling. We predict that only the chlorodiphosphanepalladium(II)– [Cl(PH 3 ) 2 Pd(II)–] defect results in increased spin–orbit splitting of the defect state and the conduction band associated with the pristine-like SWCNT, a measure of the spin–orbit coupling of excited state transitions. This study suggests that for unpassivated sp 3 defects in (6,5) SWCNT, forming a direct bond between a heavy atom and the sp 3 carbon allows for tuning of spin–orbit coupling.

In Situ Dispersion of Palladium on TiO 2 During Reverse Water–Gas Shift Reaction: Formation of Atomically Dispersed Palladium

The application of single-atom catalysts (SACs) to high-temperature hydrogenation requires materials that thermodynamically favor metal atom isolation over cluster formation. Here, we show that Pd can be predominantly dispersed as isolated atoms onto TiO 2 during the reverse water-gas shift (rWGS) reaction at 400 °C. Achieving atomic dispersion requires an artificial increase of the absolute TiO 2 surface area by an order of magnitude and can be accomplished by physically mixing a precatalyst (Pd/TiO 2 ) with neat TiO 2 prior to the rWGS reaction. Furthermore, the in situ dispersion of Pd was reflected through a continuous increase of rWGS activity over 92 h and supported by kinetic analysis, infrared and X-ray absorption spectroscopies and scanning transmission electron microscopy. The thermodynamic stability of Pd under high-temperature rWGS conditions is associated with Pd-Ti coordination, which manifests upon O-vacancy formation and the artificial increase in TiO 2 surface area.

Nitrogen Atom Transfer Catalysis by Metallonitrene C−H Insertion: Photocatalytic Amidation of Aldehydes

Abstract C−H amination and amidation by catalytic nitrene transfer are well‐established and typically proceed via electrophilic attack of nitrenoid intermediates. In contrast, the insertion of (formal) terminal nitride ligands into C−H bonds is much less developed and catalytic nitrogen atom transfer remains unknown. We here report the synthesis of a formal terminal nitride complex of palladium. Photocrystallographic, magnetic, and computational characterization support the assignment as an authentic metallonitrene (Pd−N) with a diradical nitrogen ligand that is singly bonded to Pd II . Despite the subvalent nitrene character, selective C−H insertion with aldehydes follows nucleophilic selectivity. Transamidation of the benzamide product is enabled by reaction with N 3 SiMe 3 . Based on these results, a photocatalytic protocol for aldehyde C−H trimethylsilylamidation was developed that exhibits inverted, nucleophilic selectivity as compared to typical nitrene transfer catalysis. This first example of catalytic C−H nitrogen atom transfer offers facile access to primary amides after deprotection.
