Metallic Fuel Performance Analysis for the European Sodium Fast Reactor (ESFR-SIMPLE): Analysis of metallic fuel performance using SAS4A/SASSYS-1 $-$ MFUEL
The European Sodium Fast Reactor - Safety by Innovative Monitoring, Power Level flexibility and Experimental research (ESFR-SIMPLE) project was initiated in 2022 and includes assessment of a metallic-fueled version of the ESFR concept. Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) has been partnering with the ESFR-SIMPLE project to share its expertise on metallic fueled SFR designs and support some of its analysis. This report focuses on metallic fuel behavior analysis for ESFR-SIMPLE design conditions under base irradiation and transients (ULOF and UTOP).

Large-eddy simulation of an atmospheric bore and associated gravity wave effects on wind farm performance in the southern Great Plains
Gravity waves are a common occurrence in the atmosphere, with a variety of generation mechanisms. Their impact on wind farms has only recently gained attention, with most studies focused on wind farm-induced gravity waves. In this study, the interaction between a wind farm and gravity waves generated by an atmospheric bore event is assessed using multiscale large-eddy simulations. The atmospheric bore is created by a thunderstorm downdraft from a nocturnal mesoscale convective system (MCS). The associated gravity waves impact the wind resource and power production at a nearby wind farm during the American Wake Experiment (AWAKEN) in the US southern Great Plains. A two-domain nested setup (Δx=300 and 20 m) is used in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, forced with data from the High-Resolution Rapid Refresh model, to capture both the formation of the bore and its interaction with individual wind turbines. The MCS is resolved on the large outer domain, where the structure of the bore and the associated gravity waves are found to be especially sensitive to parameterized microphysics processes. On the finer inner domain, gravity wave interactions with individual wind turbines are resolved; wake dynamics are captured using a generalized actuator disk parameterization in WRF. The gravity waves are found to have a strong effect on the atmosphere above the wind farm; however, the effect of the waves is more nuanced closer to the surface where there is additional turbulence, both ambient and wake-generated. Notably, the gravity waves modulate the mesoscale environment by weakening and dissipating the preexisting low-level jet, which reduces hub-height wind speed and hence the simulated power output, which is confirmed by the observed supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) power data. Additionally, the gravity waves induce local wind direction variations correlated with fluctuations in pressure, which lead to fluctuations in the simulated power output as various turbines within the farm are subjected to waking from nearby turbines.

Experimental performance of a small size two stage depressed collector for a 4.8-9.6 GHz high performance TWT
Three simple small size two stage depressed collectors were designed and experimentally evaluated in conjunction with a 330 to 520 watt CW, 4.8 to 9.6 GHz traveling wave tube (TWT). Each of the three designs produced a minimum collector efficiency of 80.0 percent considering saturated TWT operation at the maximum of output frequency and at band edges. The highest minimum collector efficiency produced was 80.5 percent with a two stage depressed collector of 4.8 cm diameter by 7 cm high internal dimensions.
Cold-air performance of a 12.766-centimeter-tip-diameter axial-flow cooled turbine. 3: Effect of rotor tip clearance on overall performance of a solid blade configuration
Two tip clearance configurations, one with a recess in the casing and the other with a reduced rotor blade height, were investigated at design equivalent speed over a range of tip clearance from about 2.0 to 5.0 percent of the stator blade height. The optimum configuration with a recess in the casing was the one where the rotor tip diameter was equal to the stator tip diameter (zero blade extension). For this configuration there was an approximate 1.5 percent decrease in total efficiency for an increase in tip clearance of 1 percent of stator blade height. For the reduced blade height configurations there was an approximate 2.0 percent decrease in total efficiency for an increase in tip clearance of 1 percent of stator blade height.
Economic trade-offs between the performance of collector thermal performance tests on a Solar Simulator as opposed to outdoor testing
In 1976 a large Solar Simulator was designed and installed at Marshall Space Flight Center. This Solar Simulator is the largest of its type in the country and has a 'working' area of 4 ft x 8 ft. Recently completed comparison tests show excellent correlation with data collected in the natural sun. The Solar Simulator has been in operation since September 1976 and the costs of operation are now determinable together with the cost of design and construction. The authors compare the total operational costs of obtaining test data using the simulator with analogous costs of testing in the natural sun. In addition, productivity is compared.
Aerodynamic performances of three fan stator designs operating with rotor having tip speed of 337 meters per second and pressure ratio of 1.54. Relation of analytical code calculations to experimental performance
A hub-to-shroud and a blade-to-blade internal-flow analysis code, both inviscid and basically subsonic, were used to calculate the flow parameters within four stator-blade rows. The produced ratios of maximum suction-surface velocity to trailing-edge velocity correlated well in the midspan region, with the measured total-parameters over the minimum-loss to near stall operating range for all stators and speeds studied. The potential benefits of a blade designed with the aid of these flow analysis codes are illustrated by a proposed redesign of one of the four stators studied. An overall efficiency improvement of 1.6 points above the peak measured for that stator is predicted for the redesign.
Radiation performance of AlGaAs concentrator cells and expected performance of cascade structures
Aluminum gallium arsenide, GaAs, silicon and InGaAs cells have been irradiated with 1 MeV electrons and 37 MeV protons. These cells are candidates for individual cells in a cascade structure. Data is presented for both electron and proton irradiation studies for one sun and a concentration level of 100X AMO. Results of calculations on the radiation resistance of cascade cell structures based on the individual cell data are also presented. Both series connected and separately connected structures are investigated.
