Review—Development of Highly Active and Durable Hybrid Compressive Platinum Lattice Catalysts for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells: Mathematical Modeling and Experimental Work

This review provides a comprehensive overview on the development of highly active and durable platinum catalysts with ultra-low Pt loadings for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) through a combined mathematical modeling and experimental work. First, simulation techniques were applied to evaluate the validity of the Tafel approximation for the calculation of the mass activity (MA) and specific activity (SA). A one-dimensional agglomeration model was developed and solved to understand the effects of exchange current density, porosity, agglomerate size, Nafion ® film thickness, and Pt loading on the MA and SA. High porosity (> 60%) and agglomerations at high Pt loadings cause the loss of the Tafel approximation and consequently the decrease in MA and SA. A new structure parameter was introduced to estimate the real porous structure using the fractal theory. The volumetric catalyst density was corrected by the fractal dimension (measured by Hg porosimetry), which gave a good agreement with the experimental values. The loading-dependent Tafel equation was then derived, which contains both the utilization and the non-linear scaling factor. Second, activated carbon composite support (ACCS) with optimized surface area, porosity, pore size, and pore size distribution was developed. The hydrophilic/hydrophobic ratio, structural properties (amorphous/crystalline ratio), and the number of active sites were optimized through metal-catalyzed pyrolysis. Stability of ACCS and Pt/ACCS were evaluated using an accelerated stress test (AST). The results indicated that Pt/ACCS showed no significant loss of MA and power density after 5,000 cycles at 1.0–1.5 V, while the commercial Pt/C catalysts showed drastic losses of MA and power density. Finally, monolayers of compressed Pt (core–shell-type Pt 3 Co 1 ) catalysts were structured by diffusing Co atoms (previously embedded in ACCS) into Pt. Compressive Pt lattice (Pt * ) catalysts were synthesized through an annealing procedure developed at the University of South Carolina (USC). The Pt * /ACCS catalyst showed high initial power density (rated) of 0.174 g Pt kW −1 and high stability (24 mV loss) at 0.8 A cm −2 after 30,000 cycles (0.6–1.0 V). The outstanding performance of Pt * /ACCS is due to the synergistic effect of ACCS and compressive Pt * lattice.

Interpreting Ionic Conductivity for Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell Catalyst Layers with Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy and Transmission Line Modeling

A cathode catalyst layer containing optimally distributed ionomer is critical to reduce the platinum loading and increase its utilization in polymer electrolyte fuel cells. Here, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to measure effective ionic conductivity of pseudo catalyst layers (PCLs) at a relative humidity (RH) range of 50%-120%. These results are compared to previous work using the hydrogen pump (HP) method. EIS effective ionic conductivity results reported here are higher than those from the HP because in the HP set-up ionic pathways must be effectively connected through the PCL to be counted, whereas in the EIS measurement, ionomer segments that are in contact with the membrane but are not effectively connected all the way through the PCL can be detected. Double layer capacitances and effective ionic conductivities of Pt/C catalyst layers with various supports and ionomer to carbon (I/C) ratios were studied. High surface area carbon support resulted in a lower effective ionic conductivity compared to the graphitized carbon support due to worse ionomer dispersion. Effective ionic conductivities of Pt/C layers were compared to that of PCLs. On average, effective ionic conductivities of Pt/C layers were higher than PCLs because of possible carbon agglomeratio n within the PCLs.

Process model for multilayer slide coating of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells

Slide coating is a precision method suitable for depositing multiple liquid-film layers simultaneously. Originally developed in the photographic film industry, it has been deployed for manufacturing of other products that benefit from multilayer coatings. One emerging application is the manufacture of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), which are used to produce electricity through electrochemical reactions of hydrogen and oxygen gas. The membrane-electrode assembly (MEA), in which key electrochemical reactions occur, consists of three layers that are typically deposited separately in serial fashion and then laminated together to form the three-layer MEA, i.e., three sequential steps of coat and dry. Adapting the process to simultaneous, multilayer slide coating of all three layers will save equipment cost and space while minimizing possible exposure to contaminants during transition between the steps. We are developing a three-layer slide coating model to aid the manufacturing process design of PEMFC. The model accounts for rheology of each layer, which typically exhibit shear thinning behavior. Model predictions are used to investigate simultaneous coatability of catalyst inks and to determine the best layer-by-layer ink selection.

Nanotomography Investigation of 3D Printed Batteries with a Water-in-Salt Gel Polymer Electrolyte

3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, has emerged as a promising strategy to design and fabricate future energy storage devices. Although significant progress has been reported, current 3D printed battery designs are still limited by the choice of the electrolyte, such as ceramic or conventional toxic organic electrolytes. Here, we incorporated the latest developments in aqueous batteries into a novel 3D printable battery that can be fabricated directly in an ambient environment that is also more environmentally friendly. Specifically, a gel polymer electrolyte with a water-in-salt concept was introduced in our 3D-printed batteries. Combining their advantages, the resulting 3D printable batteries show promise for much simplified processing conditions. Further, the structural, (electro-)chemical, and morphological evolution batteries are being investigated by synchrotron X-ray nanotomography and electrochemical analysis. Overall, our research explores the possibility of an easier and more environmentally friendly way to build 3D printable, customizable batteries for future technologies.

Durability evaluation of a Fe–N–C catalyst in polymer electrolyte fuel cell environment via accelerated stress tests

In this work, an “atomically-dispersed” iron-nitrogen-carbon (Fe–N–C) catalyst was used to provide a systematic comparison of platinum group metal (PGM)-free electrocatalyst degradation as a function of accelerated stress tests (ASTs) in an acidic polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC). It was determined that the majority of catalyst degradation was caused by cell operation in presence of O 2 . In contrast, potential cycling of the Fe–N–C-containing cathode under inert atmosphere over typical PEFC cathode operation from 0.95 to 0.6 V had little to no effect. The increase in kinetic overpotential is shown to be the major source of the PEFC performance decrease during the ASTs. These results continue to showcase the need for development of robust PGM-free electrocatalysts in concert with improved electrochemical performance.

3D Printed Carbon Aerogels for Polymer-Electrolyte Fuel Cells

Carbon aerogels (CA) are known for ultra-low density, very high surface area, fine porous structure, and excellent electrical conductivity. Recent advances in high resolution 3D printing at LLNL enable the manufacturing of complex structured CA electrodes which have been demonstrated in electrolysis, flow battery, and supercapacitor applications. Polymer-electrolyte fuel cells (PEFC) may be an excellent candidate for these materials/methods as designers seek to optimize membrane-electrode assemblies to achieve higher efficiencies. A major challenge to PEFC design is two-phase flow due to water production which causes pore flooding and leads to cell instability and degradation. To mitigate these effects, groups have investigated the creation of liquid specific pathways in the porous layers to alleviate liquid buildup and enhance gas diffusion. While some progress has been made, traditionally manufactured GDLs, which consist of randomly distributed carbon fibers, are limiting. 3D printed CAs are a promising solution as complex macroporous electrode structures can be manufactured out of micro and nano porous filaments with a high level of control. Additionally, the process may allow for the consolidation of multiple layers (MPL, GDL, & flow channels) into a single printed architecture. In this work various CA lattice structures were printed using a direct ink write (DIW) method and liquid breakthrough pressures were measured to demonstrate the ability to tune the water pathways to achieve specific pressure thresholds. Furthermore, a discussion of the prospects for printed CA electrodes in PEFC will focus on material properties, synthesis techniques, and current challenges.

Dynamic sparse x-ray nanotomography reveals ionomer hydration mechanism in polymer electrolyte fuel-cell catalyst

Tomographic imaging of time-evolving samples is a challenging yet important task for various research fields. At the nanoscale, current approaches face limitations of measurement speed or resolution due to lengthy acquisitions. We developed a dynamic nanotomography technique based on sparse dynamic imaging and 4D tomography modeling. We demonstrated the technique, using ptychographic x-ray computed tomography as its imaging modality, on resolving the in situ hydration process of polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) catalyst. The technique provides a 40-time increase in temporal resolution compared to conventional approaches, yielding 28 nm half-period spatial and 12 min temporal resolution. The results allow a quantitative characterization of the water intake process inside PEFC catalysts with nanoscale resolution, which is crucial for understanding their electrochemical mechanisms and optimizing their performance. Our technique enables high-speed operando nanotomography studies and paves the way for wider application of dynamic tomography at the nanoscale.

Universal Relationship between Limiting Current and Electrochemical Transport Properties in Malonate-Based Polymer Electrolytes

There is considerable interest in developing high-performance electrolytes for rechargeable lithium batteries. For practical applications, the electrolyte must support large dc currents. However, the parameters most often reported in the literature, conductivity, κ, and current fraction, ρ + , reflect ion transport in the limit of infinitesimal currents. In this limit, the efficacy of an electrolyte is given by the product κρ + . The limiting current density, i lim , is the maximum current density that can be applied across an electrolyte; the cell voltage diverges if the applied current density exceeds ilim. This parameter reflects ion transport in the limit of large dc currents and is therefore of practical interest. It would therefore be convenient if i lim could be predicted from measurements of κρ + . In order to explore this possibility, we studied six malonate-based polymers and PEO at a fixed salt concentration (r = 0.08) and temperature (90°C) using symmetric cells with planar electrodes. Unfortunately, there is no correlation between ilim and κρ + . When the applied current density, i, is less than ilim, the cell voltage approaches a stable plateau, ϕ plateau . Here, we found a linear dependence between i and thickness-normalized plateau potential, ϕ plateau L –1 , irrespective of the magnitude of the applied current. In all seven polymer electrolytes, we found a linear correlation between ilim and the slopes of these lines, σ. In other words, measurements of σ can be used to predict the limiting current.

Deep eutectic solvent-based polymer electrolyte for solid-state lithium metal batteries

Poly(ethylene) oxide (PEO)-based electrolytes have been widely studied for solid-state lithium batteries while their ionic conductivity and lithium-ion transference number still need to be further improved. Herein, using the combined experimental and theoretical approach, we demonstrate a novel, solid-state PEO-deep eutectic solvent (DES) electrolyte for the first time. We found that the in situ formation of DES can reduce the crystallinity of PEO matrix and more Li + ions can move freely owing to the weakened coordination between ether oxygens and Li-ions. Besides, we show that more Li + ions can be dissociated from Li salts in PEO-DES electrolyte using the molecular dynamics simulations. Such liquid-free PEO-DES electrolytes showed good ionic conductivity (2.1 × 10 −4 S cm −1 ) which is 160% higher than that of conventional PEO-LiTFSI (8.1 × 10 −5 S cm −1 ) electrolyte at 60 °C. Additionally, the PEO-DES electrolyte showed 136% increase of Li-ion transference number (0.33) compared with ionic liquid-doped PEO-LiTFSI (0.14) at 60 °C. Moreover, the PEO-DES exhibited good compatibility with Li metal and stable Li plating/stripping behavior with little morphology change of Li metal. In conclusion, this research also provides new insights into the enhancement mechanisms of novel polymer electrolytes, improving our fundamental understanding of critical challenges that have impeded the adoption of solid-state lithium metal batteries.

Development status of solid polymer electrolyte water electrolysis for manned spacecraft life support systems

Details of the design and system verification test results are presented for a six-man-rated oxygen generation system. The system configuration incorporates components and instrumentation for computer-controlled operation with automatic start-up/shutdown sequencing, fault detection and isolation, and with self-contained sensors and controls for automatic safe emergency shutdown. All fluid and electrical components, sensors, and electronic controls are designed to be easily maintainable under zero-gravity conditions. On-board component spares are utilized in the system concept to sustain long-term operation (six months minimum) in a manned spacecraft application. The system is centered on a 27-cell solid polymer electrolyte water electrolysis module which, combined with the associated system components and controls, forms a total system envelope 40 in. high, 40 in. wide, and 30 in. deep.

Design of a Single-Ion Conducting Polymer Electrolyte for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Here, a sodium bis(fluoroallyl)malonato borate salt (NaBFMB) is synthesized. Using a Click thiol-ene reaction, NaBFMB can be photo-crosslinked with a tri-thiol (trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercapto propionate), TMPT) to create a single-ion conducting electrolyte (NaSIE), with all negative charges residing on the borate moieties and anions immobilized through the 3-D crosslinked network. The NaSIE can be prepared either as a free-standing film or through a drop-cast method followed by a photo crosslinking method for an in-situ formation on top of the electrodes. The free-standing film of NaSIE has a high ionic conductivity of 2 × 10 –3 S cm –1 at 30 °C, and a high transference number (t Na + ) of 0.91 as measured through the Bruce-Vincent method. The electrochemical stability of NaSIE polymer electrolyte is demonstrated via cyclic voltammetry (CV) to be stable up to 5 V vs Na/Na + . When tested inside a symmetrical Na//Na cell, the NaSIE shows a critical current density (CCD) of 0.4 mA cm –2 . The stability of NaSIE is further demonstrated via a long cycling of the stripping/plating test with a current density of 0.1 mA cm –2 at five-minute intervals for over 10,000 min. Using the in-situ method, NaSIE is used as the electrolyte for a sodium metal battery using P2 (Na resides at prismatic sites with with ABBAAB stacking)-cathode of Na 0.67 Ni 0.33 Mn 0.67 O 2 (NNMO) and is cycled between the cut-off voltages of 2.0–4.0 V. A high initial specific capacity (85.7 mAh g –1 ) with a capacity retention of 86.79% after 150 cycles is obtained.

Nanostructured Block Polymer Electrolytes: Tailoring Self-Assembly to Unlock the Potential in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Ion-containing solid block polymer (BP) electrolytes can self-assemble into microphase-separated domains to facilitate the independent optimization of ion conduction and mechanical stability; this assembly behavior has the potential to improve the functionality and safety of lithium-ion batteries over liquid electrolytes to meet future demands (e.g., large capacities and long lifetimes) in various applications. However, significant enhancements in the ionic conductivity and processability of BPs must be realized for BP-based electrolytes to become robust alternatives in commercial devices. Toward this end, the controlled modification of BP electrolytes’ intra-domain (nanometer-scale) and multi-grain (micrometer-scale) structure is one viable approach; intra-domain ion transport and segmental compatibility (related to the effective Flory–Huggins parameter, χ eff ) can be increased by tuning the ion and monomer-segment distributions, and the morphology can be selected such that the multi-grain transport is less sensitive to grain size and orientation.

Role of solvation site segmental dynamics on ion transport in ethylene-oxide based side-chain polymer electrolytes

Ion conducting capability is often imparted to polymeric materials through short polyether side-chains, and yet the impact of this graft polymer architecture on ion solvation and conduction has not been fully explored. Here, we use a combination of impedance spectroscopy, vibrational spectroscopy, and atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) to compare the conductivity, ionic interactions, and polymer dynamics in a series of graft polyether electrolytes. We find that in poly[(oligo ethylene oxide)methyl ether methacrylate] (POEM), a widely used graft polymer electrolyte, the ionic conductivity drops more than an order of magnitude as the side-chain length is decreased from nine ethylene oxide (EO) units to three. This difference in conductivity is unexplained by differences in the calorimetric glass transition temperature (T g ), which varies only slightly with side-chain length. Furthermore, through vibrational spectroscopy and MD simulations we demonstrate that both linear and graft polyethers solvate Li⁺ ions effectively and dissociate them from large counterions, irrespective of side-chain length. Li⁺ ions do, however, show preferential solvation by EO units far from the methacrylate backbone. Similarly, EO units far from the backbone show enhanced segmental dynamics, while those near the immobile methacrylate group move substantially more slowly, as quantified by bond vector autocorrelation relaxation times. This heterogeneity in both ion solvation and local segmental relaxation explains variation in ion conductivity where material-averaged properties such as T g and number of free ions fail to do so. Importantly, the ionic conductivity is dictated primarily by the segmental mobility of the EO units which form effective solvation sites, rather than system-wide dynamics.

A self-healing liquid metal anode with PEO-Based polymer electrolytes for rechargeable lithium batteries

In this study, a Ga-Sn liquid metal alloy material is demonstrated as a self-healing anode system due to its fluidity via operando synchrotron-based transmission X-ray microscopy and X-ray diffraction experiments. Cracks formed due to volume expansions can be recovered by the fluidity of the liquid metals. By incorporating with a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based electrolyte at 60°C, the Ga-Sn anode shows a reversible lithium insertion and extraction process with a high initial discharge specific capacity of 682 mAh g -1 , followed by delivering a capacity of 462 mAh g -1 in the second cycle at C/20 rate. Furthermore, compared with its solid counterparts, the Ga-Sn liquid metal anode demonstrates a better capability to maintain its mechanical integrity and better contact with PEO solid electrolytes due to its advantageous features of the liquid. This study suggests a potential strategy to use liquid metal alloys with polymer solid electrolyte to solve the anode challenges in rechargeable lithium batteries.

Aryl ether-free polymer electrolytes for electrochemical and energy devices

Anion exchange polymers (AEPs) play a crucial role in green hydrogen production through anion exchange membrane water electrolysis. The chemical stability of AEPs is paramount for stable system operation in electrolysers and other electrochemical devices. Given the instability of aryl ethercontaining AEPs under high pH conditions, recent research has focused on quaternized aryl ether-free variants. The primary goal of this review is to provide a greater depth of knowledge on the synthesis of aryl ether-free AEPs targeted for electrochemical devices. Synthetic pathways that yield polyaromatic AEPs include acid-catalysed polyhydroxyalkylation, metal-promoted coupling reactions, ionene synthesis via nucleophilic substitution, alkylation of polybenzimidazole, and Diels–Alder polymerization. Polyolefinic AEPs are prepared through addition polymerization, ring-opening metathesis, radiation grafting reactions, and anionic polymerization. Discussions cover structure–property–performance relationships of AEPs in fuel cells, redox flow batteries, and water and CO 2 electrolysers, along with the current status of scale-up synthesis and commercialization.
