A literature review and inventory of the effects of environment on the fatigue behavior of metals

The current state of knowledge of the effects of gas environments (at atmospheric pressure and below) on the fatigue behavior of metals is reviewed. Among the topics considered are the mechanisms proposed to explain the differences observed in the fatigue behavior of vacuum- and air-tested specimens, the effects of environment on the surface topography of fatigue cycled specimens, the effect of environment on the various phases of the fatigue phenomenon, the effect of prolonged exposure to vacuum on fatigue life, the variation of fatigue life with decreasing gas pressure, and gas evolution during fatigue cycling. Analysis of the findings of this review indicates that hydrogen embrittlement is primarily responsible for decreased fatigue resistance in humid environments, and that dislocations move more easily during tests in vacuum than during test in air. It was found that fatigue cracks generally initiated and propagated more rapidly in air than in vacuum. Prolonged exposure to vacuum does not adversely affect fatigue resistance. The variation of fatigue life with decreasing gas pressure is sometimes stepped and sometimes continuous.

Waves in active and passive periodic structures - A review

The theory and recent applications of waves in periodic structures are reviewed. Both the Floquet and coupled waves approach are analyzed in some detail. The theoretical part of the paper includes wave propagation in unbounded and bounded active or passive periodic media, wave scattering from periodic boundaries, source radiation (dipole, Cerenkov, transition, and Smith-Purcell) in periodic media, and pulse transmission through a periodic slab. The applications part covers the recent development in a variety of fields: distributed feedback oscillators, filters, mode converters, couplers, second-harmonic generators, deflectors, modulators, and transducers in the fields of integrated optics and integrated surface acoustics. Work on insect compound eyes, mechanical structures, ocean waves, pulse compressions, temperature waves, and cholesteric liquid crystals, and particles interaction with crystals is briefly reviewed, especially in the case of zeolite crystals and superlattices. Recent advances in fabrication techniques for very fine gratings are also covered.

Hybrid composites - State-of-the-art review: Analysis, design, application and fabrication

The review covers hybrid composites that consist of two or more different types of fibers (or fiber composites) in a frequently repeated pattern in a laminate. The fibers considered are boron, graphite, glass, and Kevlar; the resins considered include mostly structural epoxies, with some utilization of polyimides and thermoplastics. The review shows that considerable data have been generated for the tensile strength properties, as well as tensile and thermal fatigue, of interply hybrids, and for the impact resistance of interply and intraply hybrids. The rule of mixtures appears to be adequate for predicting longitudinal and transverse mechanical properties of unidirectional interply hybrids, and linear laminate theory appears to be adequate for predicting the elastic response of hybrids.

A review of NASA-sponsored technology assessment projects

Recent technology assessment studies sponsored by NASA are reviewed, and a summary of the technical results as well as a critique of the methodologies are presented. The reviews include Assessment of Lighter-Than-Air Technology, Technology Assessment of Portable Energy RDT&P, Technology Assessment of Future Intercity Passenger Transportation Systems, and Technology Assessment of Space Disposal of Radioactive Nuclear Waste. The use of workshops has been introduced as a unique element of some of these assessments. Also included in this report is a brief synopsis of a method of quantifying opinions obtained through such group interactions. Representative of the current technology assessments, these studies cover a broad range of socio-political factors and issues in greater depth than previously considered in NASA sponsored studies. In addition to the lessons learned through the conduct of these studies, a few suggestions for improving the effectiveness of future technology assessments are provided.

Review of coaxial flow gas core nuclear rocket fluid mechanics

The two areas where discussion and comparison of work is most useful are in (1) the factors which influence containment in cold flow studies; and (2) the effects of heat generation on containment. The work in these areas have not received any critical review in the past. The review is structured in such a way as to compare and contrast the related work of the program, rather than to preserve the chronological order of the work.

A review of thrust-vectoring schemes for fighter applications

This paper presents a review of thrust vectoring schemes for advanced fighter applications. Results are presented from wind tunnel and system integration studies on thrust vectoring nozzle concepts. Vectoring data are presented from wind tunnel tests of axisymmetric C-D (convergent-divergent) and nonaxisymmetric wedge, C-D, single ramp and USB (upper-surface blowing) nozzle concepts. Results from recent airframe/nozzle integration studies on the impact of thrust vectoring on weight, cooling and performance characteristics are discussed. This review indicates that the aircraft designer has, at his disposal, a wide range of thrust vectoring schemes which offer potential for added or improved aircraft capability.

Plasma-sprayed zirconia gas path seal technology: A state-of-the-art review

The benefits derived from application of ceramic materials to high pressure turbine gas path seal components are described and the developmental backgrounds of various approaches are reviewed. The most fully developed approaches are those employing plasma sprayed zirconium oxide as the ceramic material. Prevention of cracking and spalling of the zirconium oxide under cyclic thermal shock conditions imposed by the engine operating cycle is the most immediate problem to be solved before implementation is undertaken. Three promising approaches to improving cyclic thermal shock resistance are described and comparative rig performance of each are reviewed. Advanced concepts showing potential for performance improvements are described.

A review of the theory of trailing edge noise

A critical review is presented of the literature on the theory of the generation of sound by the interaction of low Mach number turbulent flow with the edge of a semi-infinite rigid plate. Three distinct approaches to the subject are identified, consisting of theories based on (1) Lighthill's acoustic analogy, (2) the solution of special, linearized hydroacoustic problems and (3) ad hoc aerodynamic source models. It is shown that, when appropriately interpreted, all relevant theories produce essentially identical predictions in the limit of very small Mach numbers. In none of the theories, however, are the implications of the Kutta condition discussed, nor of the effect of forward flight and source motion relative to the trailing edge. Accordingly this review includes an outline of a redevelopment of the theory which gives a unified view of the problem, exhibits the significance of the various approximations, and incorporates the effect of mean motion and of the Kutta condition.

Spray combustion models - A review

Due to recent theoretical and experimental advances, modeling spray combustion can be contemplated as a means of supplementing traditional cut and try combustor development methods. This review describes spray models that are currently being developed and their validation. The review is limited to steady, turbulent two- and three-dimensional systems typified by furnaces and gas turbine combustors. Both locally homogeneous flow models, where the phases are assumed to be in kinematic and thermodynamic equilibrium at each point in the flow, and more complete two-phase flow models, which allow for finite rate processes between the phases, are considered.
