Landsat - A satellite surface water divining rod

A DAM (Detection and Mapping) package is developed to provide accurate up-to-date economical and properly formatted maps of surface water using Landsat earth resources satellite digital data in order to detect and locate unrecorded water impoundments. The operational procedure is discussed in terms of data acquisition, establishment of the control network, specification of map characteristics, and generation of maps. Preliminary evaluations essentially indicate that the DAM package can be readily used by personnel unfamiliar with computer processing of remote sensing data, that no false detections are encountered, and that detection accuracy of surface water impoundments greater than 4 hectares is between 95-98%. However, terrain shadows present a problem in mountainous areas at low sun angles. A total cost of less than 15 cents per sq mile to compile the inventory is noted.

Geometric model and analysis of rod-like large space structures

The application of geometrical schemes to large sphere antenna reflectors was investigated. The purpose of these studies is to determine the shape and size of flat segmented surfaces which approximate general shells of revolution and in particular spherical and paraboloidal reflective surfaces. The extensive mathematical and computational geometry analyses of the reflector resulted in the development of a general purpose computer program. This program is capable of generating the complete design parameters of the dish and can meet stringent accuracy requirements. The computer program also includes a graphical self contained subroutine which graphically displays the required design.

Analysis and design of a uniform-clearance, pumping-ring rod seal for the Stirling engine

A uniform clearance pumping ring, as opposed to the conventional taper clearance one, is described. The uniform clearance concept eliminates complex elastohydrodynamic problems and enables a simple analytical treatment to be made. An analytical expression is derived for the pumping rate showing the effect of various design parameters on the pumping ring's performance. An optimum clearance is found by which the pumping rate is maximized and a numerical example is presented to demonstrate the potential of the uniform clearance design.

Measurement of rod seal lubrication for Stirling engine

The elastohydrodynamic behavior of sliding elastomeric seals for the Stirling engine, was analyzed using an experimental apparatus to determine the instantaneous oil film thickness throughout the cyclic reciprocating motion. Tests were conducted on two commercial elastomeric seals: a "T" seal (76 mm O.D. and 3.8 mm between backing rings) and an "O" ring (76 mm O.D. and 5.3 mm diameter). Testing conditions included seal durometers of 70 and 90, sliding velocities of 0.8, 2.0, and 3.6 m/s, and no pressure gradient across the seal. Both acrylic and aluminum cylinders were used. Measured oil film thickness profiles were compared to results of the elastohydrodynamic analysis. The comparison shows an overall qualitative agreement. Friction and oil leakage measurements were also made at these sliding speeds. The fluid used was a typical synthetic base automotive lubricant. It is concluded that this first time experimental analytical comparison for oil film thickness indicates the need for some improvements in the analytical model and in the experimental technique.

Rod-Wall Sound Shield for Wind Tunnels

Test model is shielded from turbulence radiated from wind tunnel walls. Shield overcomes problems caused by leading-edge configuration and leading edge angle of inclination of previous designs. Has successfully maintained a laminar rather than turbulent boundary layer.

Sorting Titanium Welding Rods

Three types of titanium welding wires identified by their resistance to current flow. Welding-wire tester quickly identifies unknown titaniumalloy wire by touching wire with test probe, and comparing meter response with standard response. Before touching wire, tip of test probe dipped into an electrolyte.

Thermal and elastohydrodynamic analysis of reciprocating rod seals in the Stirling engine

Sliding seals and pumping rings for use in Stirling engines are analyzed from an elastohydrodynamic point of view. The oil film thickness and pressure distribution are found by a finite element method and then used to determine the operating temperature of sliding seals. Thermal aspects of dry seals (cap seals) are also discussed. A parametric study has been made and the results summarized in a set of curves.

Low-Temperature Seal for Actuator Rod

Combination bearing and seal used on Space Shuttle functions reliably at temperatures as low as - 160 degrees F and as high as + 130 degrees F. Corrosion-resistant stainless-steel spacer separates secondary and primary seals in both old and new versions of seal assembly. In new version, combination of flexible sealing lip and bridge is less susceptible to cracking at low temperatures.

Cladding For Transversely-Pumped Laser Rod

Combination of suitable dimensioning and cladding of neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet of similar solid-state laser provides for more efficient utilization of transversely-incident pump light from diode lasers. New design overcomes some of limitations of longitudinal- and older transverse-pumping concepts and promotes operation at higher output powers in TEM00 mode.
