Polarization rotation in a ferroelectric BaTiO 3 film through low-energy He-implantation

Domain engineering in ferroelectric thin films is crucial for next-generation microelectronic and photonic technologies. Here, a method is demonstrated to precisely control domain configurations in BaTiO 3 thin films through low-energy He ion implantation. The approach transforms a mixed ferroelectric domain state with significant in-plane polarization into a uniform out-of-plane tetragonal phase by selectively modifying the strain state in the film’s top region. This structural transition significantly improves domain homogeneity and reduces polarization imprint, leading to symmetric ferroelectric switching characteristics. The demonstrated ability to manipulate ferroelectric domains post-growth enables tailored functional properties without compromising the coherently strained bottom interface. The method’s compatibility with semiconductor processing and ability to selectively modify specific regions make it particularly promising for practical implementation in integrated devices. This work establishes a versatile approach for strain-mediated domain engineering that could be extended to a wide range of ferroelectric systems, providing new opportunities for memory, sensing, and photonic applications where precise control of polarization states is essential.

Approach and rotation of reconnecting topological defect lines in liquid crystal

Topological defects are a universal concept across many disciplines, such as crystallography, liquid-crystalline physics, low-temperature physics, cosmology, and even biology. In nematic liquid crystals, topological defects called disclinations have been widely studied. For their three-dimensional (3D) dynamics, however, only recently have theoretical approaches dealing with fully 3D configurations been reported. Further, recent experiments have observed 3D disclination line reconnections, a phenomenon characteristic of defect line dynamics, but detailed discussions were limited to the case of approximately parallel defects. In this paper, we focus on the case of two disclination lines that approach at finite angles and lie in separate planes, a more fundamentally 3D reconnection configuration. Observing and analyzing such reconnection events, we find the square-root law of the distance between disclinations and the decrease of the interdisclination angle over time. We compare the experimental results with theory and find qualitative agreement on the scaling of distance and angle with time, but quantitative disagreement on distance and angle relative mobilities. To probe this disagreement, we derive the equations of motion for systems with reduced twist constant and also carry out simulations for this case. These, together with the experimental results, suggest that deformations of disclinations may be responsible for the disagreement. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Understanding Large-Scale Dynamos in Unstratified Rotating Shear Flows

For this work, we combine simulations with new analyses that overcome previous pitfalls to explicate how nonhelical mean-field dynamos grow and saturate in unstratified, magnetorotationally driven turbulence. Shear of the mean radial magnetic field amplifies the azimuthal component. Radial fields are regenerated by velocity fluctuations that induce shear of radial magnetic fluctuations, followed by Lorentz and Coriolis forces that source a negative off-diagonal component in the turbulent diffusivity tensor. We present a simple schematic to illustrate this dynamo growth. A different part of the Lorentz force forms a third-order correlator in the mean electromotive force that saturates the dynamo.

Errors in reconstruction of dichroic X-ray orientation tomography due to polarization rotation of the incident beam

Dichroic X-ray tomography is a technique in which the crystal orientation or magnetization of a sample is resolved in three dimensions. The best-known uses of this technique are for observation of magnetic moments via circular dichroism, using left- and right-handed circularly polarized X-ray beams. Another variant uses linear dichroism to resolve the crystal orientation. In both these techniques, it is assumed that the absorption of X-rays along a path inside a material can be computed as a line integral of a local absorption coefficient along the ray path. For linear dichroism, this assumption is inaccurate because the polarization of the beam changes along the propagation direction when the optic axis of the material is not aligned along the polarization. In this work, a finite-element Maxwell solver is used to simulate tomography and reconstructions. The propagation effect can lead to significant errors in the reconstructed orientations. These errors may be mitigated by taking data at additional angles or by operating at energies at which the dichroism is weak. An iterative approach is proposed which may allow accurate reconstruction with fewer data than would otherwise be required.

Efficacious Qubit Mappings for Quantum Simulations of the 12 C Rotational Band

Solving atomic nuclei from first principles places enormous demands on computational resources, which grow exponentially with increasing number of particles and the size of the space they occupy. We present first quantum simulations based on the variational quantum eigensolver for the low-lying structure of the 12C nucleus that provide acceptable bound-state energies even in the presence of noise. Here, we achieve this by taking advantage of two critical developments. First, we utilize an almost perfect symmetry of atomic nuclei that, in a complete symmetry-adapted basis, drastically reduces the size of the model space. Second, we use the efficacious Gray encoding, for which it has been recently shown that it is resource efficient, especially when coupled with a near band-diagonal structure of the nuclear Hamiltonian.

Three and Two Phase Rotating Field Inductive Couplers for Wireless Power Transfer with One Phase per Layer Windings

Multiphase inductive wireless charging coils have been proposed recently to improve coupler surface power density, reduce component stress and size, and provide near-constant power delivery to charge mobile electric systems. Several aspects for the fundamental characterization of multiphase coils are explored up to six phases including approximate mutual inductance with size and turn variation, induced voltage, and output power estimation. The relative component stress and size of passive components for resonant operation are compared between the multiphase variants. A combination of an experimentally validated 3D electromagnetic finite element analysis (FEA) and power electronic co-simulations are used to validate the estimated quantities approximated with a mixture of analytical equations and an artificial neural network model for mutual inductance. A novel three-phase transmitter, two-phase receiver coil pair is also proposed for electric vehicle charging to reduce the number of connections and compensation complexity on the vehicle-side with improved power output compared to a two-phase configuration.

Separating Sensible and Latent Cooling with Electrically Charged Rotating Vortexes and Vapor Capturing Air Handler Technology

The dehumidification of air is a highly energy-intensive process, typically requiring vapor compression systems to cool the air below its dew point temperature. This project investigated air dehumidification achieved by electrostatic and dielectrophoresis forces in electrosprays and centrifugal principles in cyclone separators. As a practical implementation of these processes, Electrospray Vortical Flow eXchanger (EVFX) prototypes were designed, fabricated, and tested. Electrosprays were employed to energize water droplets, which then captured water vapor via dielectrophoresis. A cyclone separator was positioned downstream of the electrosprays. This combination increased the dehumidification efficiency and controlled the flow of the water vapor condensate removed from the air.
