Strategies to improve the mechanical robustness of metal halide perovskite solar cells

We report on the mechanical properties of high-efficiency perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with different chemical components by measuring the fracture energy (G c ) of films and devices. With the help of both macroscopic and microscopic techniques, we identify the locations where fracture takes place in the devices (either adhesive or cohesive failure) with various material and device structures. We propose strategies that can improve the fracture energy of PSCs based on the measured G c : the use of ozone-nucleated atomic layer deposition to improve charge transport layer robustness and the use of 2D perovskites and morphology control to improve the perovskite robustness. Our findings offer a pathway to rationally study the mechanical properties of PSCs and enable such cells to be more mechanically robust to reach commercial viability.

Vibrational relaxation dynamics in layered perovskite quantum wells

Significance Halide perovskites, especially layered perovskites, offer a number of advantages to creating bright and efficient light-emitting devices and other optoelectronic applications. The organic–inorganic hybrid layered perovskite features complex lattice dynamics due to the ionic character of the crystal and the softness arising from noncovalent bonds between molecular moieties and the inorganic network. Especially, the packing geometry of the organic barriers leads to a structural deformation of inorganic octahedral, which strongly affects the properties that are crucial for device applications. In this work, we use high-resolution resonant impulsive stimulated Raman spectroscopy of a variety of ligand substitutions in layered perovskites. We find the composition of organic ligands can substantially change the dephasing rate of optical phonons and their temperature dependence, due to varying degrees of anharmonicity in the lattice and dynamic structural disorder.

The varying temperature- and pressure-induced phase transition pathways in hybrid improper ferroelectric Sr 3 Sn 2 O 7

A variable-temperature and pressure single-crystal diffraction study of hybrid improper ferroelectric Sr 3 Sn 2 O 7 is reported. In combination with symmetry analysis, we reveal that the application of pressure and temperature induce distinct phase transition pathways, driven by a differing response of the octahedral rotations to these stimuli. Contrary to what has been previously predicted, we observe the ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition between 10.17(18) and 12.13(14) GPa, meaning the hybrid improper ferroelectric phase remains stable to significantly higher pressures than expected.
