Fluttering of the Tail Surfaces of an Airplane and the Means for Its Prevention

The present article, which constitutes a continuation of the work of Von Baumhauer and Konig, will therefore be restricted to the fluttering of the tail surfaces and especially to oscillations of the horizontal empennage. This will also illustrate the characteristics of all other phenomena of fluttering.

The Porpoising Characteristics of a Planing Surface Representing the Forebody of a Flying-Boat Hull

Porpoising characteristics were observed on V-body fitted with tail surfaces for different combinations of load, speed, moment of inertia, location of pivot, elevator setting, and tail area. A critical trim was found which was unaltered by elevator setting or tail area. Critical trim was lowered by moving pivot either forward or down or increasing radius or gyration. Increase in mass and moment of inertia increased amplitude of oscillations. Complete results are tabulated and shown graphically.

An Investigation of the Ranger V-770-8 Engine Installation for the Edo XOSE-1 Airplane I : Cooling

Engine temperature data and cooling correlating analyses of the engine and oil cooler are presented in connection with an investigation of the cowling and cooling of the ranger V-770-8 engine installation in the Edo XOSE-1 airplane. Three types of baffles were installed in the course of the tests: the conventional, the turbulent-flow, and the NACA diffuser baffles. Each of the types was of merit in cooling a different region on the cylinder. Incorporation of the best features of the three types into one baffle, a method which appears to be feasible, would provide improvements in cylinder cooling.
