Flight Test Assessments of Pilot Workload, System Usability, and Situation Awareness of TASAR

Traffic Aware Strategic Aircrew Requests (TASAR) is an onboard automation concept intended to identify trajectory optimizations, in terms of fuel and time saving objectives, clear of known traffic, weather, and airspace restrictions prior to the aircrew initiating a route-change request to Air Traffic Control (ATC). The software implementation of the TASAR concept is the Traffic Aware Planner (TAP). TASAR analysis and development is being executed by the NASA Langley Research Center's Crew Systems and Aviation Operations Branch (CSAOB) under the sponsorship of the Airspace Technology Demonstration (ATD) Project of the NASA Airspace Operations and Safety Program (AOSP). The TASAR Flight Trial-2 (FT-2) was conducted in June, 2015 out of the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport. This flight trial was conducted using a Piaggio Avanti flight test aircraft and consisted of 12 Evaluation Flights with airline commercial pilots participating as the Evaluation Pilots, three destination airports in Atlanta and Jacksonville Air Route Traffic Control Centers, and one pair of flight plans associated with each destination airport. The primary goal of FT-2 was to reduce risk for upcoming operational trials with NASA partner airlines, Alaska Airlines and Virgin America. To accomplish this primary goal, six independent objectives were conducted during FT-2, however, this paper will report only the findings of Objective 5; the assessment of system usability, pilot perceived workload, and the degree of pilot acceptability of the TAP Human Machine Interface (HMI) during flight operations, via the administration of several subjective measures.

The Weather Analysis Display (WAND) Tool: Developing a Meteorological Data Display Tool for Situational Awareness During Day-Of-Launch of Space Launch Vehicles Using Python

Atmospheric conditions are an important driver in the design and operation of space launch vehicles. The Profile Envision and Splicing Tool (PRESTO) was developed by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Natural Environments Branch (NE) to generate vertically complete atmospheric profiles from various data sources at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC), co-located on the United States Air Force (USAF) Eastern Range (ER), for NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) day-of-launch (DOL) loads and trajectory analysis. PRESTO was designed solely to generate a vertically complete atmospheric profile (Orcutt et al., 2017). However, NE has also been tasked to provide a quality assessment of meteorological data examined on DOL, which goes beyond PRESTO’s utility. Thus, NE developed the Weather Analysis Display (WAND) to visualize data from all available observation systems in conjunction with climatological databases. WAND can display data from various sources in multiple ways, including Skew-T Log-P plots, time-height cross sections, and time series. WAND was developed in Python 3 taking advantage of common packages, such as NumPy for data handling, SciPy for mathematical functions, Matplotlib for data visualization, and Tkinter for the execution of the Graphical User Interface (GUI).

Situation awareness and dynamic ensemble forecasting of abnormal behavior in cyber-physical system

A plurality of monitoring nodes may each generate a time-series of current monitoring node values representing current operation of a cyber-physical system. A feature-based forecasting framework may receive the time-series of and generate a set of current feature vectors using feature discovery techniques. The feature behavior for each monitoring node may be characterized in the form of decision boundaries that separate normal and abnormal space based on operating data of the system. A set of ensemble state-space models may be constructed to represent feature evolution in the time-domain, wherein the forecasted outputs from the set of ensemble state-space models comprise anticipated time evolution of features. The framework may then obtain an overall features forecast through dynamic ensemble averaging and compare the overall features forecast to a threshold to generate an estimate associated with at least one feature vector crossing an associated decision boundary.

Central alarm station interface for situation awareness

A method for analyzing security alarms is provided. The method comprising receiving alarm data from a number of security sensors generating alarms, wherein the alarm data includes spatio-temporal data regarding where and when an alarm is triggered. The alarm data is displayed on a user interface. The alarm data is analyzed for spatio-temporal relationships among the alarms according to a number of pattern recognition algorithms. The alarms are identified as genuine alarms if a discernable pattern is recognized among the alarms.
