$S^5$: Tidal Disruption in Crater 2 and Formation of Diffuse Dwarf Galaxies in the Local Group

We present results of a spectroscopic campaign around the diffuse dwarf galaxy Crater 2 (Cra2) and its tidal tails as part of the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey ($S^5$). Cra2 is a Milky Way dwarf spheroidal satellite with extremely cold kinematics, but a huge size similar to the Small Magellanic Cloud, which may be difficult to explain within collisionless cold dark matter. We identify 143 Cra2 members, of which 114 belong to the galaxy's main body and 29 are deemed part of its stellar stream. We confirm that Cra2 is dynamically cold (central velocity dispersion $2.51^{+0.33}_{-0.30}\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$) and also discover a $\approx$7$σ$ velocity gradient consistent with its tidal debris track. We separately estimate the stream velocity dispersion to be $5.74^{+0.98}_{-0.83}\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$. We develop a suite of $N$-body simulations with both cuspy and cored density profiles on a realistic Cra2 orbit to compare with $S^5$ observations. We find that the velocity dispersion ratio between Cra2 stream and galaxy ($2.30^{+0.41}_{-0.35}$) is difficult to reconcile with a cuspy halo with fiducial concentration and an initial mass predicted by standard stellar mass$-$halo mass relationships. Instead, either a cored halo with relatively small core radius or a low-concentration cuspy model can reproduce this ratio. Despite tidal mass loss, Cra2 is metal-poor ($\langle \rm[Fe/H]\rangle=-2.16\pm0.04$) compared to the stellar mass$-$metallicity relation for its luminosity. Other diffuse dwarf galaxies similar to Cra2 in the Local Group (Antlia 2 and Andromeda 19) also challenge galaxy formation models. Finally, we discuss possible formation scenarios for Cra2, including ram-pressure stripping of a gas-rich progenitor combined with tides.

Nanometer-Scale Fullerene-Type Conjugated Covalent Cages Based on Triazine: Design, Doping with Li + , and H 2 /CO 2 Adsorption

Spherical and hollow molecular cages based on planar triazine (C 3 N 3 ) hubs and aromatic phenylene connectors have been developed. The cages exhibit topologies akin to C 20 , C 60 , and C 70 fullerenes with diameters that range from 2.3 to 4.9 nm. Apertures into the cage interiors are tuned by varying the aromatic connectors situated between the C 3 N 3 -units. The stabilities of the C 3 N 3 cages increase with size owing to reduced bending strain of planar nodes and connectors that make up the spherical aromatic networks. Doping of the cages with Li + reveals the capacity of the cages for significant adsorption of gaseous H 2 and CO 2 . The design of graphene-like spherical cages is also discussed.

Analytic model of electron transport through and over non-linear barriers

Tunneling barriers are an essential component of electron sources, sensors, detectors, and vacuum nanoelectronics, and a pivotal factor in their performance, but the barriers themselves routinely depart from the analytic models used to model their behavior. Here, a new formalism is developed to analytically and accurately model emission through and over barriers associated with depletion layers, nanotip barriers, and MIM structures. The transmission probability for depletion layer and metal-insulator-metal (MIM) and metaloxide-semiconductor (MOS) barriers is accurately modeled as the electron energy exceeds the barrier height using approaches designed for rapid implementation demanded by simulation codes, and extensible to general barriers. The models supersede conventional thermal and field models in depletion and MIM/MOS barrier studies. Thermal-field methods are used to treat the transmission probability, and shape factor methods to treat the tunneling factor. Analytic formulae for current density are obtained. The methods ease device simulation and characterization of current-voltage relations for emerging technologically interesting barriers with better accuracy.

Electron Beam Melting of Niobium Alloys from Blended Powders

Niobium-based tungsten alloys are desirable for high-temperature structural applications yet are restricted in practice by limited room-temperature ductility and fabricability. Powder bed fusion additive manufacturing is one technology that could be leveraged to process alloys with limited ductility, without the need for pre-alloying. A custom electron beam powder bed fusion machine was used to demonstrate the processability of blended Nb-1Zr, Nb-10W-1Zr-0.1C, and Nb-20W-1Zr-0.1C powders, with resulting solid optical densities of 99+%. Ultimately, post-processing heat treatments were required to increase tungsten diffusion in niobium, as well as to attain satisfactory mechanical properties.

Globular Cluster Candidates in the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy

Recently, new Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf-galaxy globular clusters were discovered, which opens the question of the actual size of the Sgr globular cluster population, and therefore on our understanding of the Sgr galaxy formation and accretion history of the Milky Way. Based on Gaia EDR3 and SDSS IV DR16 (APOGEE-2) data sets, we performed an analysis of the color–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of the eight new Sgr globular clusters found by Minniti et al. from a sound cleaning of the contamination of Milky Way and Sgr field stars, complemented by available kinematic and metal abundance information. The cleaned CMDs and spatial stellar distibutions reveal the presence of stars with a wide range of cluster membership probabilities. Minni 332 turned out to be a younger (<9 Gyr) and more metal-rich ([M/H] ≳ -1.0 dex) globular cluster than M54, the nuclear Sgr globular cluster; as could also be the case of Minni 342, 348, and 349, although their results are less convincing. Minni 341 could be an open cluster candidate (age < 1 Gyr, [M/H] ~ -0.3 dex), while the analyses of Minni 335, 343, and 344 did not allow us to confirm their physical reality. We also built the Sgr cluster frequency (CF) using available ages of the Sgr globular clusters and compared it with that obtained from the Sgr star formation history. Both CFs are in excellent agreement. However, the addition of eight new globular clusters with ages and metallicities distributed according to the Sgr age–metallicity relationship turns out in a remarkably different CF.

The Far-away Blues: Exploring the Furthest Extents of the Boötes I Ultra-faint Dwarf Galaxy

Establishing the spatial extents and the nature of the outer stellar populations of dwarf galaxies is necessary for the determination of their total masses, current dynamical states, and past evolution. We here describe our investigation of the outer stellar content of the Boötes I ultra-faint dwarf galaxy, a satellite of the the Milky Way. We identify candidate member blue horizontal branch and blue straggler stars of Boötes I, both tracers of the underlying ancient stellar population, using a combination of multiband Pan-STARRS photometry and Gaia astrometry. We find a total of twenty-four candidate blue horizontal branch member stars with apparent magnitudes and proper motions consistent with membership of Boötes I, nine of which reside at projected distances beyond the nominal King profile tidal radius derived from earlier fits to photometry. We also identify four blue straggler stars of appropriate apparent magnitude to be at the distance of Boötes I, but all four are too faint to have high-quality astrometry from Gaia. The outer blue horizontal branch stars that we have identified confirm that the spatial distribution of the stellar population of Boötes I is quite extended. The morphology on the sky of these outer envelope candidate member stars is evocative of tidal interactions, a possibility that we explore further with simple dynamical models.
