Radioisotopes and subliming materials for spacecraft orientation and microthrustor design optimization
This paper reports on the development of the Helios Program, which has been actively pursued for approximately four years. The spacecraft is designed to carry ten experiments to within 0.3 AU of the sun to measure the interplanetary environment. Details of the design and development phase are reported.
A thermal model for the EOB experiment has been developed, adopted to test data, and used to predict flight temperatures. These predictions are compared to flight data covering the period from launch until the first black-out.

How gravitational radiation affects Doppler tracking is briefly described. The status of the analyses of the sensitivities achievable with the NASA-JPL Deep Space Network(DSN) is given.
The principal results of the Helios investigations through the first five years of the missions are presented.
The instruments, techniques, and analysis methods employed in IR observations of solar-system objects are discussed and illustrated with sample data. Particular attention is given to (1) high-resolution (Doppler-limited) spectra of H2O in Comet Halley and Comet Wilson (1986l), obtained with the NASA Kuiper Airborne Observatory in 1985-1986, and (2) scanning observations of Jovian thermal emission, obtained with the NASA IRTF in 1987 and subjected to detailed time-series analysis to investigate atmospheric motion. The data are presented in spectra, energy-level diagrams, maps, and graphs and briefly characterized.
The ESA-NASA Ulysses mission will furnish high-latitude observations which may deepen current understanding of the outward flow of gases from the magnetically open regions of the sun. Also furnished will be a clearer view of the processes in the Galaxy that create cosmic rays, and how cosmic rays enter the solar system. The Ulysses mission has already achieved important new results during its travel in the ecliptic plane; the density and temperature of the interstellar neutral He flowing into the solar system has been directly measured.
