Formation, cooling history and age of impact events on the IIE iron parent body: Evidence from the Miles meteorite

Most iron meteorites formed in planetary cores during differentiation, but the IIE iron meteorites have chemical and physical features that are inconsistent with this origin. By combining mineral chemistry, mineral modes and three-dimensional petrography, we reconstruct the bulk chemistry of the felsic silicate-bearing Miles IIE iron meteorite and demonstrate that the silicate inclusion compositions are similar to partial melts produced experimentally from an H chondrite composition. We use the reconstructed bulk composition, mineralogy and thermodynamic modelling to show that melting above ~ 1200°C under reducing conditions formed metal (Fe-Ni alloy) and felsic silicate partial melts. Upon cooling, the melts crystallized Mg-rich pyroxenes, Na- and K-rich feldspars, and tridymite. Importantly, this mechanism enriches cosmochemically volatile elements (i.e., those with a 50% condensation temperature of ~430–830°C, like Na and K) to the level found in the felsic silicate inclusions. The presence of crystallographically disordered srilankite (only stable above 1160°C) and an absence of Widmanstätten texture require both high peak temperatures and rapid cooling, which cannot be explained by core formation. Instead, they point to small melt volumes, a transient heat pulse, and small thermal mass, and imply efficient physical segregation of silicate and metallic melts through buoyancy separation followed by rapid cooling that arrested the separation of metal and silicate liquid phases. In situ 207 Pb/ 206 Pb age of 4542.3 ± 4.0 Ma in Zr-oxide and phosphate minerals dates the melting event that formed the silicate inclusions. This age aligns with the earliest ages found in other IIE iron meteorite silicates and requires a heating event ~25 million years after the solar system formed. We found 39 Ar/ 40 Ar ages of 3495 ± 52 Ma (low-T) and 4303 ± 7 Ma (high-T) in a K-feldspar grain, with the 3495 Ma age aligning with later thermal events recorded in other IIE iron meteorites. Dating reveals the complex petrogenetic and thermal history of Miles and the IIE iron meteorites. This is the first IIE iron meteorite found to record evidence of heating at 4.5 and 3.5 Ga likely from impact events. We propose that high-velocity impact(s) into an iron-rich, porous chondritic parent body at ~4.54 Ga produced immiscible metal and silicate melts that cooled rapidly and trapped low density silicate inclusions within high density metal. Other IIE irons that formed at lower peak temperatures (900–1000°C) contain chondritic silicate inclusions and relict chondrules, supporting this conceptual model. In conclusion, this petrogenesis is consistent with thermodynamic modelling, experimental data and the wide range of peak temperatures and cooling rates observed in the IIE iron meteorites.

Efficient and mechanically-robust organic solar cells based on vertical stratification modulation through sequential blade-coating

Mechanically durable organic solar cells (OSCs) with high efficiency are deemed as the ideal candidate for the power source of the next generation wearable electronic devices. However, the brittle nature of small molecules in most high-efficiency OSCs consisting of polymer and small molecule encourages easy formation of cracks in the photoactive film under deformation. Here, the vertical composition distribution of the active layer has been well optimized through sequential blade coating to realize highly deformable while efficient OSC. The optimized morphology exhibits distinct donor-rich and homogenous region distributed along the vertical direction in the bulk. The donor-rich region provides sufficient chain entanglements and strong interfaces beneficial for mechanical robustness of film, while homogeneously mixed region offers continuous interpenetrating network to maintain high device through-put, resulting in superior efficiency of 14.4% with high crack-onset strain (COS) of 30.5%. This efficiency versus COS combination is much higher than the best combination reported in all polymer systems (COS of 15.9% and efficiency of 11.1%). To the best of our knowledge, it is the highest COS value achieved in polymer-small molecule systems. As a result, the rational control over vertical stratification demonstrated here would guide researchers in the development of innovative wearable electronics.

The HOSTS Survey: Evidence for an Extended Dust Disk and Constraints on the Presence of Giant Planets in the Habitable Zone of β Leo

The young (50–400 Myr) A3V star β Leo is a primary target to study the formation history and evolution of extrasolar planetary systems as one of the few stars with known hot (∼1600 K), warm (∼600 K), and cold (∼120 K) dust belt components. In this paper, we present deep mid-infrared measurements of the warm dust brightness obtained with the Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer (LBTI) as part of its exozodiacal dust survey (HOSTS). The measured excess is 0.47% ± 0.050% within the central 1.5 au, rising to 0.81% ± 0.026% within 4.5 au, outside the habitable zone of β Leo. This dust level is 50 ± 10 times greater than in the solar system’s zodiacal cloud. Poynting–Robertson drag on the cold dust detected by Spitzer, and Herschel underpredicts the dust present in the habitable zone of β Leo, suggesting an additional delivery mechanism (e.g., comets) or an additional belt at ∼5.5 au. A model of these dust components is provided that implies the absence of planets more than a few Saturn masses between ∼5 au and the outer belt at ∼40 au. We also observationally constrain giant planets with the LBTI imaging channel at 3.8 μm wavelength. Assuming an age of 50 Myr, any planet in the system between approximately 5–50 au must be less than a few Jupiter masses, consistent with our dust model. Taken together, these observations showcase the deep contrasts and detection capabilities attainable by the LBTI for both warm exozodiacal dust and giant exoplanets in or near the habitable zone of nearby stars.

Mechanisms of mechanochemical synthesis of cesium lead halides: pathways toward stabilization of α-CsPbI 3

Cesium lead iodide with cubic perovskite structure (α-CsPbI 3 ) is gaining significant interest in photovoltaic applications due to its excellent absorbance of the visible solar light and other attractive optoelectronic properties. However, the synthesis of stable α-CsPbI 3 poses a significant challenge. Mechanochemical synthesis is emerging as a suitable method for the preparation of cesium lead halides. This work investigates the ball milling-induced synthesis of cesium lead halides perovskite phase using halide mixing or doping approaches. The synthesis in the CsI + PbI 2 , CsBr + PbBr 2 , CsBr + PbI 2 , and CsI + PbI 2 + NdI 3 mixtures and halide exchange reactions in the CsPbBr 3 + 3KI and CsBr + PbBr 2 + 3KI systems are investigated to elucidate the mechanism of this process. Then, CsPb(I 1–x Br x ) 3 and CsPb( 1–y )Nd y I 3 materials with different x and y ratios are prepared, and their stability is probed in the air using light absorption spectroscopy. These results suggest that Nd doping is more efficient in the stabilization of the perovskite structure than partial replacement of iodine with bromine. Microstructure observations reveal the existence of two different product formation mechanisms depending on the mechanical properties of reactants. The results reveal that the milling temperature has a significant impact on the reaction kinetics. Here, the produced particles nucleate and grow at the reactant interface and retard the synthesis reaction by creating a diffusion barrier. Extended milling reduces the product particle size and creates fresh contact between reactants, thus facilitating reaction completion.

Defect Equilibria from First Principles: From Widegap Oxides to Topological Semimetals

Materials functionality and performance is rarely determined by the ideal crystal alone but is usually affected by formation of imperfections and the solution of impurities. In some applications, such as solar thermochemical hydrogen generation, defect formation is the fundamentally enabling mechanism of the desired functionality. In other cases, such as Cd3As2 topological semimetals, unintentional self-doping presents an obstacle to the access to the unique electronic properties. In either case, a quantitative understanding of the relevant defect mechanism is essential for developing design strategies. This presentation will touch upon numerous aspects in the computational simulation of defect equilibria, including non-equilibrium design strategies, the coupling of solid state and gas-phase reactions, dopant-defect and defect-defect interactions, both attractive and repulsive, the accuracy of total energy functionals and electronic structure methods, and the role of the shape of the density of states for the charge balance condition and Fermi level position, as well as machine-learning prediction of defect energies (1). Specific materials systems include Ga2O3 (2), Cd3As2 (3), and (Sr,Ce)MnO3 (4). (1) M.D. Witman, A. Goyal, T. Ogitsu, A.H. McDaniel, S. Lany, Nat. Comput. Sci. 3, 675 (2023). (2) A. Goyal, A. Gas Phase Synthesis of Benzene via the Propargyl Radical Self-Reaction

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been invoked in fundamental molecular mass growth processes in our galaxy. We provide compelling evidence of the formation of the very first ringed aromatic and building block of PAHs - benzene - via the self-recombination of two resonantly stabilized propargyl (C 3 H 3 ) radicals in dilute environments using isomer selective synchrotron-based mass spectrometry coupled to theoretical calculations. Along with benzene, three other structural isomers (1,5-hexadiyne, fulvene, 2-ethynyl-1,3-butadiene) and o-benzyne are detected and their branching ratios quantified experimentally and verified with the aid of computational fluid dynamics and kinetic simulations. Furthermore, these results uncover molecular growth pathways not only in interstellar, circumstellar, and solar systems environments, but also in combustion systems gaining us a better understanding of the hydrocarbon chemistry of our universe.

Searches for Extremely Metal-poor Galaxies Using Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA–Selected Dwarf Galaxies

We present a study of nearby dwarf galaxies selected from the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) blind H I survey. A primary goal of the project was to utilize a nonstandard selection method with the hope of detecting previously unrecognized extremely metal-poor (XMP) galaxies. The study was motivated by the recent discovery of two XMP galaxies, Leo P and Leoncino, which were both originally found via the ALFALFA survey. We have obtained narrowband H α images for 42 dwarf systems, many of which are located in the Local Void in front of the Pisces–Perseus Supercluster. Spectra for 11 of the best candidates resulted in the determination of metal abundances for 10 of the systems. None were found to be extremely metal-poor, although one system (AGC 123350) was found to have an oxygen abundance of log(O/H)+12 = 7.46, or ~6% solar. One of the galaxies in our sample exhibits a high oxygen abundance for its luminosity, suggesting the possibility that it may have a tidal origin.

SIF and Vegetation Indices in the US Midwestern Agroecosystems, 2016-2021, Carbon Monitoring System (CMS)

This dataset contains half-hourly ground solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) and vegetation indices including NDVI, EVI, Red edge chlorophyll index, green chlorophyll index, and photochemical reflectance index at seven crop sites in Nebraska and Illinois for the period 2016-2021. Four sites were located at Eddy Covariance (EC) tower sites (sites US-Ne2, US-Ne3, US-UiB, and US-UiC), and three sites were located on private farms (sites Reifsteck, Rund, and Reinhart). The sites were either miscanthus, corn-soybean rotation or corn-corn-soybean rotation. The spectral data for SIF retrieval and hyperspectral reflectance for vegetation index calculation were collected by the FluoSpec2 system, installed near planting, and uninstalled after harvest to collect whole growing-season data. Raw nadir SIF at 760 nm from different algorithms (sFLD, 3FLD, iFLD, SFM) are included. SFM_nonlinear and SFM_linear represent the Spectral fitting method (SFM) with the assumption that fluorescence and reflectance change with wavelength non-linearly and linearly, respectively. Additional data include two SIF correction factors including calibration coefficient adjustment factor (f_cal_corr_QEPRO) and upscaling nadir SIF to eddy covariance footprint factor (ratio_EC footprint, SIF pixel), and measured FPAR from quantum sensors and Rededge NDVI calculated FPAR. The data are provided in comma-separated values (CSV) format.

Temperature‐Dependent Crystallization in Two‐Step Perovskite Deposition Revealed by In Situ GIWAXS and Machine Learning‐Guided Analysis

The performance and stability of perovskite solar cells are strongly governed by the crystallization behavior of their active layer. In two-step sequential deposition, early-stage film formation plays a decisive role in determining final phase purity and device quality. Guided by a data-driven analysis of nearly 39 000 devices in the FAIR perovskite database, we identified solvent-mediated quenching and thermal processing as key variables affecting power conversion efficiency (PCE), particularly in two-step fabrication. Here, to investigate these effects in real time, we designed and implemented a custom-built, temperature-controlled spin-coating system, enabling precise thermal modulation during precursor deposition. Using this platform, we performed in situ GIWAXS measurements to study the crystallization dynamics of FA 0.5 MA 0.5 PbI 3 films over a temperature range of 30°C–90°C. Our results reveal a non-monotonic relationship between spin-coating temperature and α-phase formation, governed by the interplay between precursor interdiffusion, PbI 2 crystallinity, and δ-phase suppression. The custom thermal control enabled us to isolate and quantify these competing effects during the earliest stages of film formation, providing mechanistic insight into how spin-coating temperature governs both phase purity and kinetic pathways in two-step perovskite systems. Temperature-dependent SEM and photovoltaic device measurements further demonstrate that early-stage crystallization pathways directly translate into differences in morphology, charge-transport continuity, and device performance. These findings inform targeted strategies for optimizing deposition protocols to balance rapid nucleation, phase stability, and device performance.

Guanidinium-Assisted Surface Matrix Engineering for Highly Efficient Perovskite Quantum Dot Photovoltaics

Metal halide perovskite quantum dots (Pe-QDs) are of great interest in new-generation photovoltaics (PVs). However, it remains challenging in the construction of conductive and intact Pe-QD films to maximize their functionality. Herein, a ligand-assisted surface matrix strategy to engineer the surface and packing states of Pe-QD solids is demonstrated by a mild thermal annealing treatment after ligand exchange processing (referred to as “LE-TA”) triggered by guanidinium thiocyanate. The “LE-TA” method induces the formation of surface matrix on CsPbI 3 QDs, which is dominated by the cationic guanidinium (GA+) rather than the SCN-, maintaining the intact cubic structure and facilitating interparticle electrical interaction of QD solids. Consequently, the GA-matrix-confined CsPbI 3 QDs exhibit remarkably enhanced charge mobility and carrier diffusion length compared to control ones, leading to a champion power conversion efficiency of 15.21% when assembled in PVs, which is one of the highest among all Pe-QD solar cells. Additionally, the “LE-TA” method shows similar effects when applied to other Pe-QD PV systems like CsPbBr 3 and FAPbI 3 (FA = formamidinium), indicating its versatility in regulating the surfaces of various Pe-QDs. This work may afford new guidelines to construct electrically conductive and structurally intact Pe-QD solids for efficient optoelectronic devices.

The Next-Generation Ecosystem Experiments: Arctic (NGEE Arctic), was a research effort to reduce uncertainty in Earth System Models by developing a predictive understanding of carbon-rich Arctic ecosystems and feedbacks to climate. NGEE Arctic was supported by the Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research. The NGEE Arctic project had two field research sites: 1) located within the Arctic polygonal tundra coastal region on the Barrow Environmental Observatory (BEO) and the North Slope near Utqiagvik (Barrow), Alaska and 2) multiple areas on the discontinuous permafrost region of the Seward Peninsula north of Nome, Alaska. Through observations, experiments, and synthesis with existing datasets, NGEE Arctic provided an enhanced knowledge base for multi-scale modeling and contributed to improved process representation at global pan-Arctic scales within the Department of Energy's Earth system Model (the Energy Exascale Earth System Model, or E3SM), and specifically within the E3SM Land Model component (ELM).
