Development of termination and utilization concepts for flat conductor cables. Volume 1: Development of low profile flat conductor cable connecting device and permanent splice

The development of low-profile flat conductor cable (FCC) connecting device and FCC permanent splice methods are discussed. The design goal for the low-profile connecting device was to mate and unmate FCC harness to a typical spacecraft component with a maximum height of 3/8 in. The results indicate that the design, fabrication, and processing of the low-profile connecting device are feasible and practical. Some redesign will be required to achieve the goal of 3/8 in. Also, failures were experienced subsequent to salt spray and humidity exposure. Five different FCC permanent splice methods were considered. Subsequent to evaluation of these five methods, two design concepts were chosen for development tests.

Spacecraft microbial burden reduction due to atmospheric entry heating: Jupiter

Planetary quarantine analyses performed for recent unmanned Mars and Venus missions assumed that the probability of contamination by a spacecraft given accidental impact was equivalent to one. However, in the case of the gaseous outer planets, the heat generated during the inadvertent entry of a spacecraft into the planetary atmosphere might be sufficient to cause significant microbial burden reduction. This could affect navigation strategy by reducing the necessity for biasing the aim point away from the planets. An effort has been underway to develop the tools necessary to predict temperature histories for a typical spacecraft during inadvertent entry. In order that the results have general applicability, parametric analyses were performed. The thermal response of the spacecraft components and debris resulting from disintegration was determined. The temperature histories of small particles and composite materials, such as thermal blankets and an antenna, were given special attention. Guidelines are given to indicate the types of components and debris most likely to contain viable organisms, which could contaminate the lower layers of the Jovian atmosphere (approximately one atmosphere of pressure).

Guidance, navigation, and control systems performance analysis: Apollo 13 mission report

The conclusions of the analyses of the inflight performance of the Apollo 13 spacecraft guidance, navigation, and control equipment are presented. The subjects discussed are: (1) the command module systems, (2) the lunar module inertial measurement unit, (3) the lunar module digital autopilot, (4) the lunar module abort guidance system, (5) lunar module optical alignment checks, and (6) spacecraft component separation procedures.

Apollo/Soyuz test project operational data book. Volume 2: ASTP mass properties data book

Spacecraft mass properties data are provided for use in mission planning, trajectory documentation, mission simulations, and consumable loading. Spacecraft for use in determining locations of spacecraft components and the relationship to coordinate systems in the launch and docked configuration. Mass properties and consumable loading data for the ASTP mission are included along with consumables mass property data and mission independent consumable loading information for the CSM and DM.

The Apollo spacecraft: A chronology. Volume 2: 8 November 1962 - 30 September 1964

A chronology of the Apollo spacecraft development and production program is presented. The subjects discussed are: (1) defining contractural relations, (2) developing hardware distinctions, and (3) developing software ground rules. Illustrations, drawings, and photographs are used extensively to supplement the technical writing. Descriptions of life support systems, communication equipment, propulsion systems, control devices, and spacecraft components are provided.

Digital control of high-intensity acoustic testing

To eliminate previous system instabilities and control high-intensity acoustic tests, a digital control vibration test system is modified by a software change. Three systems for the control of acoustic testing are compared: a hybrid digital/analog system, a digital vibration system, and the same digital vibration system modified by a software change to allow acoustic testing. It is shown that the hybrid system and the modified vibration system exhibit almost equal performance, although the hybrid system performs testing twice as fast. The development of a specialized acoustic test control system is justified since it costs far less than the general-purpose vibration control system. However, the latter is much easier to set up for a test, which is important in preventing overtesting of valuable spacecraft components.

Worst-case space radiation environments for geocentric missions

Worst-case possible annual radiation fluences of energetic charged particles in the terrestrial space environment, and the resultant depth-dose distributions in aluminum, were calculated in order to establish absolute upper limits to the radiation exposure of spacecraft in geocentric orbits. The results are a concise set of data intended to aid in the determination of the feasibility of a particular mission. The data may further serve as guidelines in the evaluation of standard spacecraft components. Calculations were performed for each significant particle species populating or visiting the magnetosphere, on the basis of volume occupied by or accessible to the respective species. Thus, magnetospheric space was divided into five distinct regions using the magnetic shell parameter L, which gives the approximate geocentric distance (in earth radii) of a field line's equatorial intersect.

The effects of the geosynchronous energetic particle radiation environment on spacecraft charging phenomena

The energetic electron environment at the geosynchronous orbit is responsible for a variety of adverse charging effects on spacecraft components. The most serious of these is the degradation and failure of a complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) electronic components as a result of internal charge-buildup induced by the energetic electrons. Efforts to accurately determine the expected lifetime of these components in this orbit are hampered by the lack of detailed knowledge of the electron spectrum and intensity, particularly of the more penetrating energies greater than 1.5 MeV. This problem is illustrated through the calculation of the dose received by a CMOS device from the energetic electrons and associated bremsstrahlung as a function of aluminum shielding thickness using the NASA AE-6 and the Aerospace measured electron environments. Two computational codes which were found to be in good agreement were used to perform the calculations. For a given shielding thickness the dose received with the two radiation environments differ by as much as a factor of seven with a corresponding variation in lifetime of the CMOS.

Spacecraft charging modeling development and validation study

The effects of spacecraft charging are presented. Analytical models of the magnetospheric environment are used to show the charging interaction between the spacecraft and the plasma sheath, the discharge phenomena, and electromagnetic coupling from the discharge to spacecraft components. Ground tests to validate the models are described.

On the use of coherence functions to evaluate sources of dynamic excitation

The use of coherence functions for identifying the relative contributions of multiple dynamic inputs to the measured vibration response of spacecraft components on a practical, complex structure was investigated. Data were generated by applying simultaneous vibratory and acoustic excitation to a test model (a modified Titan instrumentation truss). Up to three inputs were used. In some cases mutually coherent inputs were generated. A digital computer program was written to analyze the test data, using an approach based on iterative computational algorithms. The results showed that the coherence function technique was effective in identifying and evaluating sources of excitation, for both independent and coherent inputs. The effect of varying the number of data samples used in the necessary averaging process was briefly investigated.

Satellite Power Systems (SPS) concept definition study. Volume 5: Special emphasis studies

Satellite configurations based on the Satellite Power System baseline requirements were analyzed and a preferred concept selected. A satellite construction base was defined, precursor operations incident to establishment of orbital support facilities identified, and the satellite construction sequence and procedures developed. Rectenna construction requirement were also addressed. Mass flow to orbit requirements were revised and traffic models established based on construction of 60 instead of 120 satellites. Analyses were conducted to determine satellite control, resources, manufacturing, and propellant requirements. The impact of the laser beam used for space-to-Earth power transmission upon the intervening atmosphere was examined as well as the inverse effect. The significant space environments and their effects on spacecraft components were investigated to define the design and operational limits imposed by the environments on an orbit transfer vehicle. The results show that LEO altitude 300 nmi and transfer orbit duration 6 months are preferrable.

Space telescope, a long-life free flyer

The paper describes NASA's Space Telescope (ST) adapted to Shuttle capabilities for launch and retrieval which utilizes the full Shuttle cargo bay space available for payloads and can be returned to the ground for refurbishment. Its objective is to maximize ST's productive lifetime, to probe the universe, and to analyze light from energy sources which cannot be studied by ground-based telescopes. The Shuttle orbiting lifetime will be extended to at least five years, and scientific instruments or failed spacecraft components will be replaced on-orbit. The ST will be returned to earth for major overhauls, refurbished, and relaunched. In summary, the Shuttle will allow space astronomy to be accomplished in the usual manner - by observing, adjusting, changing detectors, and reobserving. The support systems module, the optical telescope assembly, scientific instruments, including the wide field/planetary camera, the faint object spectrograph and the high speed photometer are described.

Spacecraft material applications: Long-term stability questions

An examination of the materials concerns for a variety of spacecraft components shows that long-term stability within the space environments is a major issue in the design of large space antenna systems. This survey paper will review some of the more recent work on the effect of space environment on (1) thin films, (2) structural composites, and (3) thermal control materials. Degradation in thermal-mechanical and optical properties associated with atmospheric and trapped particles and ultraviolet light will be highlighted. Finally, the dimensional instability associated with microcracking during thermal cycling will be examined and a methodology for estimating thermal fatigue effects from results of mechanical fatigue tests will be presented.

Concept evaluation of four thermal utility systems for low orbit spacecraft

Attention is given to the design features and comparative performance of four two-phase heat transport systems under consideration by NASA as long term space mission devices for the collection, transportation and rejection of waste heat from spacecraft components over the zero-100 C temperature range. The system types are: a mechanically pumped two-phase loop, a capillary pumped loop, an osmotic pumped loop, and a loop employing a biomorph pump. The principal advantage of a capillary pumped loop is that it is a passive system with few moving parts that inherently possesses high reliability. The working fluid recommended for use in such a thermal utility is NH3, which has the requisite combination of high latent heat of vaporization and high surface tension.

Radiation effects response data for synthetic organic insulation and dielectrics

Existing radiation response data for 130 materials of the synthetic organic insulation and dielectric class are analyzed, and thresholds and 25-percent change dose levels for these materials are presented. Both the lowest reported threshold dose (LTD) and the 25-percent change dose level are found to vary widely among the different insulators (used as spacecraft components). The LTD is tabulated to indicate the levels where radiation effects become apparent. These level are of use in setting a lower limit where changes can be expected, and could be used to exempt synthetic insulation and dielectrics from radiation considerations when the environments are substantially below this limit. Cautions to be observed in applying the data to current problems are presented.

Orbital debris issues

Man-made orbital debris, identified as a potential hazard to future space activities, is grouped into size categories. At least 79 satellites have broken up in orbit to date and, in combination with exploded rocket casings and antisatellite debris, threaten 10 km/sec collisions with other orbiting platforms. Only 5 percent of the debris is connected to payloads. The total population of orbiting objects over 4 cm in diameter could number as high as 15,000, and at 1 cm in diameter could be 32,000, based on NASA and NORAD studies. NASA has initiated the 10 yr Space Debris Assessment Program to characterize the hazards of orbiting debris, the potential damage to typical spacecraft components, and to identify means of controlling the damage.
