Far-infrared observations of W51 with high spatial resolution

Observations of the core of W51 have been made from the NASA C-141 Airborne Infrared Observatory at 55 microns with 17-, 35-, and 85-arc sec apertures and at 100 microns with a 35-arc sec aperture. These observations suggest the presence of a small less than about 20 arc sec source at 55 microns surrounded by a much broader diffuse background. In the center of the source the optical depth at 55 and 100 microns is on the order of 0.1-0.2.

Solar X-ray spectroscopy with spatial resolution

Preliminary results from a solar X-ray spectroscopic experiment are presented. The data emphasize the nonhomogeneous and multithermal nature of the corona. The oxygen-to-neon abundance ratio in the corona is found to be about 4.7, as derived from the O VIII-to-Ne IX resonance-line photon flux ratio.

Auger electron spectroscopy at high spatial resolution and nA primary beam currents

An experimental Auger microprobe system is described which incorporates a field-emission electron gun and total beam currents in the nanoampere range. The distinguishing characteristics of this system include a large multistation UHV specimen chamber, pulse counting and fully digital Auger signal-processing techniques, and digital referencing methods to eliminate the effects of beam instabilities. Some preliminary results obtained with this system are described, and it is concluded that field-emission electron sources can be used for high-resolution Auger electron spectroscopy with primary-beam spots of less than 100 nm and beam currents of the order of 1 nA.

High spatial resolution multi-color observations of Neptune during occultation by the moon

Preparations for the observation of Mars occultation using the 36 inch telescope on a C-141 airborne observatory were described, including technical improvements made to existing equipment. The abstracts of the following four publications supported by the grant were presented: (1) atmosphere composition from refractivity measurements made during occultations, (2) how big is lapetus?, (3) the diameter of Titan, (4) design and operating characteristics of voltage to frequency converters suited for occultation work. The planned observation of the April 8, 1976 occultation of the epsilon Gem star from the C-141 airborne observatory was described.

High spatial resolution measurements of surface magnetic fields of the lunar frontside

Using 0.5 keV electron reflection measurements from real time tracking of the Apollo 15 and 16 Subsatellites the surface fields were mapped on the lunar frontside. Although the surface coverage is poor except near the Apollo 16 Subsatellite track, over 100 distinct regions of greater than 0.2 square degrees area with maximum surface field strength equal to or greater than 12 nT were identified. Preliminary contour maps of two of the largest regions and the Reiner Gamma region observed by the orbiting magnetometer are presented.

High spectral and spatial resolution observations of the 12.28 micron emission from H2 in the Orion molecular cloud

The pure rotational S(2) line of molecular hydrogen at 12.28 microns was looked for in 44 positions in the Orion moleular cloud with 6 in. beams and 35 km/s spectral resolution; it was detected in 27 positions. Emission was observed over a velocity range of + or - 100 km/s. The lines are approximately symmetric, and have full widths at half maximum ranging from 100 km/s down to the resolution limit. The distribution of intensities and line shapes is largely consistent with that seen in the 2 micron hydrogen transitions. However, unexpectedly complex line profiles and point-to-point variations in linear shapes appear, particularly in the region near IRc9.

Image readout device with electronically variable spatial resolution

An invention relating to the use of a standing acoustic wave charge storage device as an image readout device is described. A frequency f sub 1 was applied to the storage transfer device to create a traveling electric field in the device in one direction along a straight line. A second frequency f sub 2 was applied to the charge transfer device to create a traveling electric field opposite to the first traveling electric field. A standing wave was created. When an image was focused on the charge transfer device, light was stored in the wells of the standing wave. When the frequency f sub 2 is removed from the device, the standing wave tends to break up and the charges stored move to an electrode connected to an output terminal and to a utilization device where the received charges represent the image on the surface of the charge transfer device along a projection of said straight line.

Spatial resolution and repeatability of Magsat crustal anomaly data over the Indian Ocean

Preliminary results from analysis of individual Magsat tracks in the eastern Indian Ocean demonstrate the resolution capability and repeatability of these data. Spectrum analysis indicates that 250 km is the absolute lower limit for resolving crustal magnetic anomalies in Magsat along-track data. Spectral coherence analysis of closely-spaced tracks shows that magnetic anomaly features with wavelengths greater than 700 km are highly repeatable from track to track.

Spatial resolution estimation of LANDSAT-4 TM and MSS data

In order to verify that the LANDSAT-4 sensors are operating within specifications, it is useful to estimate the system parameters by analysis of the measured data. One parameter of particular interest is the sensor point-spread function (PSF) which determines the resolution of the system. A method of estimating the PSF is described that utilizes data obtained during scanning of ground elements having identifiable geometric and radiometric structure. These data are then processed in such a manner as to recover either the PSF itself or to estimate the parameters of an assumed functional representation of the PSF.

High spatial resolution VLA observations of the R Aquarii jet

The Very Large Array was used to observe the jet feature of the symbiotic variable R Aquarii. A steady emission at 6 cm was confirmed for the past year, with the jet located 6.4 arcsec from R Aquarii at 29.3 deg PA. A velocity for the jet has been calculated as 40 km/sec, and may be accompanied by an ejection velocity in the range of 760-1800 km/sec. Since R Aquarii is the closest known object with a jet, further monitoring is recommended in order to detect any episodic mass transfer in what may be a binary system. The mass transfer, monitored at various wavelengths, would account for the observed optical and radio properties.

Spatial Resolution Estimation of LANDSAT-4 TM Data

Experiments to determine overall radiometric resolution are discussed. Scene structures, such as roads and field edges, are used with numerical estimation procedures to predict resolution in LANDSAT 4 Thematic Mapper imagery. A nominal resolution of 39 meters is determined rather than the predicted 30 meter prelaunch estimates.

Spatial Resolution Estimation of LANDSAT-4 Thematic Mapper Data

The problem of estimating the overall point-spread function (PSF) of multispectral scanner systems was studied using real scene data and known geometric structures in the scene. A direct solution to an approximate form of the PSF was made along with a method using the derivative of an estimated edge response. Both results agreed closely. The TM scanner system specifications are given in line-spread function width and these values are listed with the experimental results in terms of meters. The estimated values are very reasonable, considering the number of factors which could be influencing the result. The atmosphere will have a blurring effect on the overall PSF as well as on cubic convolution resampling effects and possible electronic effects not accounted for in the specification. Also, the specific definition of the LSF specification is not known nor is the actual altitude at the instant the data were acquired. Thus the nominal overall PSF half-amplitude width of 39 m is reasonable; however, a greater sample of scene objects should be evaluated to furthur verify this result.

Modification of a variational objective analysis model for new equations for pressure gradient and vertical velocity in the lower troposphere and for spatial resolution and accuracy of satellite data

Since late 1982 NASA has supported research to develop a numerical variational model for the diagnostic assimilation of conventional and space-based meteorological data. In order to analyze the model components, four variational models are defined dividing the problem naturally according to increasing complexity. The first of these variational models (MODEL I), the subject of this report, contains the two nonlinear horizontal momentum equations, the integrated continuity equation, and the hydrostatic equation. This report summarizes the results of research (1) to improve the way the large nonmeteorological parts of the pressure gradient force are partitioned between the two terms of the pressure gradient force terms of the horizontal momentum equations, (2) to generalize the integrated continuity equation to account for variable pressure thickness over elevated terrain, and (3) to introduce horizontal variation in the precision modulus weights for the observations.
