Constraining Bedrock Groundwater Residence Times in a Mountain System with Environmental Tracer Observations and Bayesian Uncertainty Quantification: Modeling and Data Package

Groundwater residence times provide fundamental descriptions of hydrologic dynamics and mixing processes in mountainous watersheds. Yet, few observational datasets that can constrain groundwater residence times over broad timescales are available in high elevation mountain systems. Here we present field observations from May 2021 of dissolved noble gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe), Chloroflourcarbons (CFCs), Sulfurhexaflouride (SF6), and tritium (3H) sampled from the Pumphouse Lower Montane study site (wells PLM1, PLM6, and PLM7) within the East River Watershed, Colorado. The presented noble gas (PLM_noblegas_2021.csv) and environmental tracer (PLM_tracers_2021.csv) observation datasets, along with the associated modeling scripts, aide in quantifying groundwater residence times and recharge conditions in a high elevation mountain system. Furthermore, the modeling scripts quantify groundwater residence time and noble gas recharge condition uncertainties using a novel Markov-chain Monte Carlo approach. All data modeling scripts are written in the Python code.

PowerGridworld: A Framework for Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning in Power Systems: Preprint

We present the PowerGridworld software package to provide users with a light-weight, modular, and customizable framework for creating power systems-focused, multi-agent gym environments that readily integrate with existing training frameworks for reinforcement learning (RL). While many frameworks exist for training multi-agent (MA) RL policies, none exist to rapidly prototype and develop the environments themselves, especially in the context of heterogeneous (composite, multi-device) power systems where power flow solutions are required to define grid-level variables and costs. PowerGridworld is an open-source software package that helps to fill this gap. To highlight PowerGridworld's key features, we present two case studies and demonstrate learning multi-agent RL policies using both OpenAI's MADDPG and RLLib's PPO algorithms where, in both cases, at least some subset of agents incorporate elements of the power flow solution at each time step as part of their reward (negative cost) structures.

Intrinsic thermal interfacial resistance measurement in bonded metal–polymer foils

Heat conduction through bonded metal–polymer interfaces often limits the overall heat transfer in electronic packaging, batteries, and heat recovery systems. To design the thermal circuit in such systems, it is essential to measure the thermal interfacial resistance (TIR) across ~1 µm to 100 µm junctions. Previously reported TIR of metal–polymer junctions utilize ASTM E1530-based two-block systems that measure the TIR by applying pressure across the interface through external heating and cooling blocks. Here, we report a novel modification of the ASTM-E1530 technique that employs integrated heaters and sensors to provide an intrinsic TIR measurement of an adhesively bonded metal–polymer junction. We design the measurement technique using finite element simulations to either passively suppress or actively compensate the lateral heat diffusion through the polymer, which can minimize the systematic error to ≲5%. Through proof-of-concept experiments, we report the TIR of metal–polymer interfaces made from DuPont’s Pyralux double-side copper-clad laminates, commonly used in flexible printed circuit boards. Our TIR measurement errors are <10%. We highlight additional sources of errors due to non-idealities in the experiment and discuss possible ways to overcome them. Our measurement technique is also applicable to interfaces that are electrically insulating such as adhesively joined metal–metal junctions and sputter-coated or welded metal–polymer junctions. Altogether, the technique is capable of measuring TIR ≳10 –5 m 2 KW –1 in bonded metal–polymer foils and can be tailored for in situ measurements in flexible electronics, circuit packaging, and other hybrid metal–polymer systems.

Deploying Automation Technology Supporting Packaging and Transportation Operations

Various United States Department of Energy (DOE) sites are investigating the deployment of robotics to provide safer, effective, and more efficient operations. By implementing robotics in packaging and transportation operations, improvements toward production efficiency, worker ergonomics, radiological dose reduction, and security assurance can be realized. Robotic Systems must be designed and implemented in concert with a facility’s safety basis, classification, and security constraints, while improving overall operational effectiveness. The desired robotic implementation should provide a path to potential long-term cost savings, reduce/eliminate hazardous conditions and radiological exposure, while improving quality and reliability of an operation process. The Savannah River Site (SRS), a DOE Site located in Aiken South Carolina, has initiated several large scale projects supporting future nuclear material disposition activities. Incorporation of automation and robotic equipment in system designs will support effective and efficient material handling operations, including container movements and packaging activities. Robotic systems will execute tasks that are precise, procedural and integrated with control systems to verify and record data for material inventory and historical archiving. An overview of the current robotic system development to perform receipt inspection, packaging, storage and shipment preparation activities of designated Type A and B shipping packages will be presented.

All-electron APW+ lo calculation of magnetic molecules with the SIRIUS domain-specific package

We report APW+lo (augmented plane wave plus local orbital) density functional theory (DFT) calculations of large molecular systems using the domain specific SIRIUS multi-functional DFT package. The APW and FLAPW (full potential linearized APW) task and data parallelism options and the advanced eigen-system solver provided by SIRIUS can be exploited for performance gains in ground state Kohn–Sham calculations on large systems. This approach is distinct from our prior use of SIRIUS as a library backend to another APW+lo or FLAPW code. We benchmark the code and demonstrate performance on several magnetic molecule and metal organic framework systems. We show that the SIRIUS package in itself is capable of handling systems as large as a several hundred atoms in the unit cell without having to make technical choices that result in the loss of accuracy with respect to that needed for the study of magnetic systems.

Automotive Power Electronics and Electric Machine Thermal Management

The transition to modular and scalable electrified vehicle transportation requires technologies to improve power density within cost and reliability constraints to maximize vehicle platform flexibility. Key research challenges arise due to the limited packaging space, coolant distribution, electrical connections, and ambient temperatures. Challenges include thermal management for compact power-dense electric machines and the associated power electronics for power management within the vehicle. High-temperature silicon and wide-bandgap (WBG) based power electronics systems are of interest to enable compact and efficient electric drive systems. The higher temperatures present packaging challenges for thermal management and reliability. In this work, we provide an overview of research for thermal characteristics of materials, packages and thermal management approaches for enabling compact power dense automotive electric drive systems.

NTS-SS-SNL-NMSITE-2017-0004 "Contamination Monitor Left in Service After Inadequate Calibration" Causes Not Fully Addressed (Causal Analysis Report)

On June 5th, 2020 Sandia National Laboratories signed and recommended for closure the evidence package for the Noncompliance Tracking System NTS—SS-SNL-NMSITE-2017-0004, Contamination Monitor Left in Service After Inadequate Calibration. On July 16th, 2020 the Sandia Field Office sent a follow-up question list to the Radiation Protection Instrumentation Program Lead to clarify some points while reviewing the evidence package. The follow-up questions readily identified deficiencies with all three calibrations of the iPCM12 systems. On July 30th, 2020 Radiation Protection hosted a meeting to better understand the exact nature of the concerns, determine if the iPCM12 machines were out of calibration and therefore would have to be taken out of service. One result of this meeting was to determine if SNL could withdraw the evidence package. SNL transmitted a letter on August 26th, 2020 recalling the evidence package and committed to performing a thorough causal analysis and invoke the required issues management processes to ensure that corrective actions are sustained.

VAN-DAMME: GPU-accelerated and symmetry-assisted quantum optimal control of multi-qubit systems

We present an open-source software package, VAN-DAMME (Versatile Approaches to Numerically Design, Accelerate, and Manipulate Magnetic Excitations), for massively-parallelized quantum optimal control (QOC) calculations of multi-qubit systems. To enable large QOC calculations, the VAN-DAMME software package utilizes symmetry-based techniques with custom GPU-enhanced algorithms. This combined approach allows for the simultaneous computation of hundreds of matrix exponential propagators that efficiently leverage the intra-GPU parallelism found in high-performance GPUs. In addition, to maximize the computational efficiency of the VAN-DAMME code, we carried out several extensive tests on data layout, computational complexity, memory requirements, and performance. These extensive analyses allowed us to develop computationally efficient approaches for evaluating complex-valued matrix exponential propagators based on Padé approximants. To assess the computational performance of our GPU-accelerated VAN-DAMME code, we carried out QOC calculations of systems containing 10 - 15 qubits, which showed that our GPU implementation is 18.4× faster than the corresponding CPU implementation. Our GPU-accelerated enhancements allow efficient calculations of multi-qubit systems, which can be used for the efficient implementation of QOC applications across multiple domains.

MLMOD: Machine Learning Methods for Data-Driven Modeling in LAMMPS

MLMOD is a software package for incorporating machine learning approaches and models into simulations of microscale mechanics and molecular dynamics in LAMMPS. Recent machine learning approaches provide promising data-driven approaches for learning representations for system behaviors from experimental data and high fidelity simulations. The package facilitates learning and using data-driven models for (i) dynamics of the system at larger spatial-temporal scales (ii) interactions between system components, (iii) features yielding coarser degrees of freedom, and (iv) features for new quantities of interest characterizing system behaviors. MLMOD provides hooks in LAMMPS for (i) modeling dynamics and time-step integration, (ii) modeling interactions, and (iii) computing quantities of interest characterizing system states. The package allows for use of machine learning methods with general model classes including Neural Networks, Gaussian Process Regression, Kernel Models, and other approaches. Here we discuss our prototype C++/Python package, aims, and example usage. Minimum GHG emissions and energy consumption of U.S. PET and polyolefin packaging supply chains in a circular economy

There is a wide agreement on the urgency of transforming linear management of plastics towards a circular economy model. However, no clear pathways exist as to required recycling technologies involved and system-wide environmental impacts. This study explores such pathways in the U.S. for the most commonly used packaging plastics through a combination of mechanical and emerging advanced recycling technologies. A system optimization model aimed at minimizing environmental impacts was developed to determine optimal end-of-life (EOL) management and locations of existing and emerging U.S. recycling infrastructures. Our study includes material flows from virgin resin production through semi-manufacturing processes to existing EOL disposal and recycling processes. An optimized circular plastics packaging system achieved greenhouse gas (GHG) emission savings of up to 28% and cumulative energy demand (CED) savings of up to 46%, compared to the linear economy. Moreover, these savings of GHG emissions and CED impacts represent a reduction of 0.16% and 0.49% compared to annual U.S. GHG emissions and energy consumption in 2022, respectively. The optimal recycling rates and systems-level circularity ranged from 78–99% and 57–75%, respectively. Increased energy savings led to increased GHG emissions showing a potential trade-off between GHG emissions and energy. Analysis of 40 scenarios showed the importance of material collection distances, blend limit of mechanically recycled resins, process yields, and mandated recycling rates for achieving a sustainable circular economy of plastics.

SootLib: A soot model library for combustion simulation

Soot formation in combustion is an important process that affects radiative heat transfer, flame temperatures, and emissions with health and environmental impacts. Soot formation involves complex chemistry for nucleation, growth, oxidation, and coagulation processes. The soot particles vary widely in size and accurate modeling requires representation of the particle size distribution (PSD). Modeling soot is not trivial, and is only one of several physical processes active in combustion systems. This paper presents a software package called SootLib, which is an open-source library for modeling soot formation and other aerosol systems. SootLib is written in C++, is documented with Doxygen, and is available on GitHub. The library includes several models for soot chemistry and coagulation, and it represents the PSD using either a sectional model or the method of moments (MOM). Four closure approaches for the MOM are implemented allowing up to eight moments: monodispersed, an assumed-shape lognormal distribution, the quadrature method of moments, and the method of moments with interpolative closure. SootLib provides an interface for inclusion in other combustion packages including CFD or reacting flow solvers. The range of models allows comparisons and sensitivity studies, and the modularity facilitates extension to other soot models.

DESS (Differential Equation System Solver) [SWR-24-48]

The Differential Equation System Solver (DESS) is a Rust crate implementing fixed-step and adaptive-step solvers and designed especially for modeling physical systems. Seven explicit ordinary differential equation (ODE) solver methods have been added so far: Euler’s, Heun’s, Midpoint, Ralston’s, Classic Runge-Kutta, Bogacki-Shampine, and Cash-Karp. These comprise five fixed-step methods and two adaptive-step methods. Few solver packages are implemented in the Rust ecosystem and none are intended specifically for physical system modeling, so the goal of DESS is to create a Rust ODE solver crate designed to easily specify and model physical systems with modular, configurable solver options. In addition to allowing users to directly input equations to solve, DESS allows users to optionally specify and define relationships between nodes in their system, which the package then translates into a system of equations via the Rust macro system, leading to simpler and more intuitive code.
