Crystal structure and magnetic properties in semiconducting Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 with Eu-Eu dimers

Magnetic structure and crystal symmetry, which primarily determine the time-reversal and inversion symmetry, may give rise to numerous exotic quantum phenomena in magnetic semiconductors and semimetals when arranged in different patterns. Here, a new layered magnetic semiconductor, Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 , was discovered and high-quality single crystals were grown using the Sn flux. According to structural characterization by x-ray diffraction and atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 is found to crystallize in a hexagonal symmetry with the space group P6 3 /mmc (No. 194). After examining different specimens, we conclude that their stoichiometry is fixed at ~Eu 2.6 Zn 0.65 Sn 0.85 As 3 , which meets the chemical charge balance. Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 is composed of septuple (Eu 1-δ Sn y As 2 )-Eu-(Zn x As)-Eu sequences. The shortest Eu–Eu distance in the system is between two Eu layers separated by Zn x As along the c-axis. Magnetization measurement shows an antiferromagnetic ordering in Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 at T N ~ 12 K, where the magnetic easy-axis is along the c-axis, and Mössbauer spectroscopy observes magnetic hyperfine splitting on Eu and Sn at 6 K. Magnetic anisotropy is significantly different from the ones along the ab-plane in other layered Eu-based magnetic semimetals. Heat capacity measurements confirm the magnetic transition around 12 K. Electrical resistivity measurement indicates semiconductor behavior with a band gap of ~0.86 eV. Finally, various Eu-based magnetic semiconductors could provide a tunable platform to study potential topological and magnetic properties.

Reliable operation of Cr 2 O 3 :Mg/ $β$-Ga 2 O 3 p–n heterojunction diodes at 600 °C

Beta gallium oxide (β-Ga 2 O 3 )-based semiconductor heterojunctions have recently demonstrated improved performance at high voltages and elevated temperatures and are, thus, promising for applications in power electronic devices and harsh environment sensors. However, the long-term reliability of these ultra-wideband gap (UWBG) semiconductor devices remains barely addressed and may be strongly influenced by chemical reactions at the p–n heterojunction interface. Here, we experimentally demonstrate operation and evaluate the reliability of Cr 2 O 3 :Mg/β-Ga 2 O 3 p–n heterojunction diodes during extended operation at 600 °C, as well as after 30 repeated cycles between 25 and 550 °C. The calculated pO 2 -temperature phase stability diagram of the Ga-Cr-O material system predicts that Ga 2 O 3 and Cr 2 O 3 should remain thermodynamically stable in contact with each other over a wide range of oxygen pressures and operating temperatures. The fabricated Cr 2 O 3 :Mg/β-Ga 2 O 3 p–n heterojunction diodes show room-temperature on/off ratios >104 at ±5 V and a breakdown voltage (V Br ) of -390 V. The leakage current increases with increasing temperature up to 600 °C, which is attributed to Poole–Frenkel emission with a trap barrier height of 0.19 eV. Over the course of a 140-h thermal soak at 600 °C, both the device turn-on voltage and on-state resistance increase from 1.08 V and 5.34 mΩ cm 2 to 1.59 V and 7.1 mΩ cm 2 , respectively. This increase is attributed to the accumulation of Mg and MgO at the Cr 2 O 3 /Ga 2 O 3 interface as observed from the time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry analysis. These findings inform future design strategies of UWBG semiconductor devices for harsh environment operation and underscore the need for further reliability assessments for β-Ga 2 O 3 -based devices.

High Thermoelectric Performance in 2D Sb 2 Te 3 and Bi 2 Te 3 Nanoplate Composites Enabled by Energy Carrier Filtering and Low Thermal Conductivity

Thermoelectrics are an important class of materials with great potential in alternative energy applications. In this study, two-dimensional (2D) nanoplates of the layered chalcogenides, Sb 2 Te 3 and Bi 2 Te 3 , are synthesized and composites of the two are investigated for their thermoelectric properties. The two materials, Sb 2 Te 3 and Bi 2 Te 3 , were synthesized as hexagonal, 2D nanoplates via a colloidal polyol route. The as-synthesized Sb 2 Te 3 and Bi 2 Te 3 vary drastically from one another in their lateral and vertical dimensions as revealed by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The single crystalline nanoplate nature is deduced by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction. Nanoplates have well-defined hexagonal facets as seen in the scanning and transmission electron microscopy images. The nanoplates were consolidated as an anisotropic nanostructured pellet via spark plasma sintering. Preferred orientation observed in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern and scanning electron microscopy images of the fractured pellets confirm the anisotropic structure of the nanoplates. Thermoelectric properties in the parallel and perpendicular directions were measured, revealing strong anisotropy with a significant reduction to thermal conductivity in the perpendicular direction due to increased phonon scattering at nanoplate interfaces. All compositions, except that of the 25% Bi 2 Te 3 nanoplate composite, behave as degenerate semiconductors with increasing electrical resistivity as the temperature increases. The Seebeck coefficient is also increased dramatically in the nanocomposites, the highest reaching 210 μV/K for 15% Bi 2 Te 3 . The increase in Seebeck is attributed to energy carrier filtering at the nanoplate interfaces. Overall, these enhanced thermoelectric properties lead to a drastic increase in the thermoelectric performance in the perpendicular direction, with zT ~ 1.26, for the 15% Bi 2 Te 3 nanoplate composite at 450 K.

Direct 2,3-Butanediol Conversion to Butene-Rich C 3+ Olefins over Copper-Modified 2D Pillared MFI: Consequence of Reduced Diffusion Length

2,3-Butanediol (2,3-BDO), a critical C 4 platform chemical derived from biomass, syngas, or CO 2 , can be converted to C 3+ olefins, serving as important renewable feedstocks for producing sustainable aviation fuels to decarbonize the hard-to-electrify air transportation sector. Herein, we report a bifunctional Cu-modified diffusion-free 2D pillared MFI catalyst (Cu/PMFI) which can selectively catalyze 2,3-BDO conversion to butene-rich C 3+ olefins (95% selectivity at 97% conversion, 523 K). 2,3-BDO conversion to butenes over Cu/PMFI primarily occurs via methyl ethyl ketone intermediate while 2-methyl propanal is also observed as another minor dehydration product that leads to butene formation. In comparison with a control mesoporous Cu/ZSM-5 sample prepared by the postsynthetic approach, Cu/PMFI shows favorable C 3+ olefin selectivity (95% over Cu/PMFI vs 80% over Cu/ZSM-5 at ~5.1 h TOS). The coke formation over Cu/PMFI is dramatically suppressed by >50% in contrast to Cu/ZSM-5 in 90 h 2,3-BDO conversion due to the reduced diffusion length. Cu/PMFI also favors butene formation and minimizes nonbutene C 3+ olefins by inhibiting the downstream oligomerization and cracking reactions. This study highlights the usefulness of the diffusion-free 2D PMFI materials in catalytic conversion of biomass-derived platform molecules and the significance of diffusion impact on catalyst coke formation and product distributions.

Solution–Doped Donor–Acceptor Copolymers Based on Diketopyrrolopyrrole and 3, 3'–Bis (2–(2–(2–Methoxyethoxy) Ethoxy) ethoxy)–2, 2'–Bithiophene Exhibiting Outstanding Thermoelectric Power Factors with p –Dopants

The design of polymeric semiconductors exhibiting high electrical conductivity (σ) and thermoelectric power factor (PF) will be vital for flexible large-area electronics. In this work, four polymers based on diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP), 2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxine (EDOT), thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (TT), and 3, 3'-bis (2-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy) ethoxy) ethoxy)-2, 2'-bithiophene (MEET) are investigated as side-chains, with the MEET polymers newly synthesized for this study. These polymers are systematically doped with tetrafluorotetracyanoquinodimethane ( F 4 TCNQ), CF3SO3H, and the synthesized dopant Cp(CN) 3 -(COOMe) 3 , differing in geometry and electron affinity. The DPP-EDOT-based polymer containing MEET as side-chains exhibits the highest conductivity (σ) ≈700 S cm–1 in this series with the acidic dopant (CF 3 SO 3 H). This polymer also shows the lowest oxidation potential by cyclic voltammetry (CV), the strongest intermolecular interactions evidenced by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and has the most oxygen-based functionality for possible hydrogen bonding and ionic screening. Other polymers exhibit high σ ≈300–500 S cm–1 and power factor up to 300 µW m –1 K –2 . The mechanism of conductivity is predominantly electronic, as validated by time-dependent conductance studies and transient thermo voltage monitoring over time, including for those doped with the acid. Furthermore, these materials maintain significant thermal stability and air stability over ≈6 weeks. Density functional theory calculations reveal molecular geometries and inform about frontier energy levels. Raman spectroscopy, in conjunction with scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS) and x-ray diffraction, provides insight into the solid-state microstructure and degree of phase separation of the doped polymer films. Infrared spectroscopy enables this study to further quantify the degree of charge transfer from polymer to dopant.

Long‐Range Non‐Coulombic Coupling at the LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 Interface

The LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 interface hosts a plethora of gate‐tunable electronic phases. Gating of LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 interfaces is usually assumed to occur electrostatically. However, increasing evidence suggests that non‐local interactions can influence and, in some cases, dominate the coupling between applied gate voltages and electronic properties. Here, quasi‐1D ballistic electron waveguides are sketched at the LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 interface as a probe to understand how gate tunability varies as a function of spatial separation. Gate tunability measurements reveal the scaling law to be at odds with the pure electrostatic coupling observed in traditional semiconductor systems. The non‐Coulombic gating at the interface is attributed to a long‐range nanoelectromechanical coupling between the gate and electron waveguide, possibly mediated by the ferroelastic domains in SrTiO 3 . The long‐range interactions at the LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 interface add unexpected richness and complexity to this correlated electron system.

Methyl α‐D‐galactopyranosyl‐(1→3)‐β‐D‐galactopyranoside and methyl β‐D‐galactopyranosyl‐(1→3)‐β‐D‐galactopyranoside: Glycosidic linkage conformation determined from MA'AT analysis

Abstract MA'ATanalysis has been applied to two biologically‐importantO‐glycosidic linkages in two disaccharides, α‐D‐Galp‐(1→3)‐β‐D‐GalpOMe (3) and β‐D‐Galp‐(1→3)‐β‐D‐GalpOMe (4). Using density functional theory (DFT) to obtain parameterized equations relating a group of trans‐O‐glycosidic NMR spin‐couplings to eitherphi(ϕ') orpsi(ψ'), and experimental 3 J COCH , 2 J COC , and 3 J COCC spin‐couplings measured in aqueous solution in 13 C‐labeled isotopomers, probability distributions ofϕ'andψ'in each linkage were determined and compared to those determined by aqueous 1‐μs molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Good agreement was found between theMA'ATand single‐state MD conformational models of these linkages for the most part, with modest (approximately <15°) differences in the mean values ofϕ'andψ', although the envelope of allowed angles (encoded in circular standard deviations or CSDs) is consistently larger forϕ'determined fromMA'ATanalysis than from MD for both linkages. TheMA'ATmodel of the α‐Galp‐(1→3)‐β‐Galplinkage agrees well with those determined previously using conventional NMR methods ( 3 J COCH values and/or 1 H‐ 1 H NOEs), but some discrepancy was observed for the β‐Galp‐(1→3)‐β‐Galplinkage, which may arise from errors in the conventions used to describe the linkage torsion angles. Statistical analyses of X‐ray crystal structures show ranges ofϕ'andψ'for both linkages that include the mean angles determined fromMA'ATanalyses, although both angles adopt a wide range of values in the crystalline state, withϕ'in β‐Galp‐(1→3)‐β‐Galplinkages showing greater‐than‐expected conformational variability.

Confinement of quasi-atomic structures in Ti 2 N and Ti 3 N 2 MXene electrides

Metal carbides, nitrides, or carbonitrides of early transition metals, better known as MXenes, possess notable structural, electrical, and magnetic properties. Analyzing electronic structures by calculating structural stability, band structure, density of states, Bader charge transfer, and work functions utilizing first principle calculations, we revealed that titanium nitride MXenes, namely Ti 2 N and Ti 3 N 2 , have excess anionic electrons in their lattice voids, making them MXene electrides. Bulk Ti 3 N 2 has competing antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) configurations with slightly more stable AFM configuration, while the Ti 2 N MXene is nonmagnetic. Although Ti 3 N 2 favors AFM configuration with hexagonal crystal systems having 6/ mmm point group symmetry, Ti 3 N 2 does not support altermagnetism. The monolayer of the Ti 3 N 2 MXene is a ferromagnetic electride. These unique properties of having non-nuclear interstitial anionic electrons in the electronic structure of titanium nitride MXene have not yet been reported in the literature. Density functional theory calculations show TiN is neither an electride, MXene, or magnetic.

Luminescence of alkali rare earth borates A 3 Ln(BO 3 ) 2 (A = Na, K; Ln = Eu, Tb)

Single crystals of a series of rare earth borates, A 3 Ln (BO 3 ) (A = Na, K; Ln = Eu, Tb), were synthesized using a boric acid/hydroxide melt. The Na 3 Ln (BO 3 ) 2 borates crystallized in the monoclinic system with space group P2 1 /n, and the K 3 Ln (BO 3 ) 2 borates crystallized in the orthorhombic system with space group Pnma. Here, the luminescence of these borates was investigated under ultraviolet and X-ray excitations for the first time. Radioluminescence (RL) measurements showed K 3 Tb(BO 3 ) 2 to be the brightest compound, with an integral intensity equal to 55% of the integral emission of Bi 4 Ge 3 O 12 (BGO) powder.

Yb Substitution and Ultralow Thermal Conductivity of the Ca 3– x Yb x AlSb 3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.81(1)) System

Here, a series of Yb-substituted Zintl phases in the Ca 3–x Yb x AlSb 3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.81(1)) system has been synthesized by initial arc melting and post-heat treatment, and their isotypic crystal structures were characterized by both powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. All four title compounds adopted the Ca 3 AlAs 3 -type structure (space group Pnma, Pearson code oP28, Z = 4). The overall structure can be described as a combination of the 1-dimensional (1D) infinite chain of ∞ 1 [Al(Sb 2 Sb 2/2 )] formed by two vertices sharing [AlSb 4 ] tetrahedral moieties and three Ca 2+ /Yb 2+ mixed sites located in between these 1D chains. The charge balance and the resultant independency of the 1D chains in the title system were explained by the Zintl-Klemm formalism [Ca 2+ /Yb 2+ ] 3 [(4b-Al 1– )(1b-Sb 2– ) 2 (2b-Sb 1– ) 2/2 ]. A series of DFT calculations proved that (1) the band overlap between the d-orbital states from two types of cations and the p-orbital states from Sb at the high symmetry Γ point implied a heavily doped degenerate semiconducting behavior of the quaternary Ca 2 YbAlSb 3 model and (2) the site preference of Yb for the M1 site was due to the electronic-factor criterion based on the Q values of each atomic site. The electron localization function calculations also proved that the two different shapes of lone pairs of the Sb atoms—the “umbrella-shape” and the “C-shape”—are determined by local geometry and the coordination environment on the anionic frameworks. Thermoelectric measurements of the quaternary title compound Ca 2.19(1) Yb 0.81 AlSb 3 showed an approximately two times larger ZT value than that of ternary Ca 3 AlSb 3 at 623 K due to increased electrical conductivity and ultralow thermal conductivity originated from Yb substitution for Ca.

Thermophysical Properties of NaCl–UCl 3 –PuCl 3 Molten Salts: A Combined Computational and Experimental Study

Actinide-bearing molten salts for use as fuels are an essential part of next generation molten salt reactors. Yet, numerous multicomponent salt mixtures are underdeveloped or have not been investigated. Here, this study, based on a combination of experimental and modeling techniques, is dedicated to determining and understanding a variety of properties of the ternary system of NaCl–UCl 3 –PuCl 3 , which represents a scenario for burnup of NaCl–UCl 3 fuel, at two compositions (∼10 and 5 mol % PuCl 3 in eutectic NaCl–UCl 3 pseudobinary) and a range of temperatures. Evaluation of the heat flow and mass loss data showed the 0.61NaCl–0.30UCl 3 –0.09PuCl 3 salt had a melting temperature of 551 ± 5 °C. Two additional thermal effects were observed occurring at approximately 410 and 494 °C. The transition occurring at 410 °C may be due to the presence of oxide in the salt. Extrapolation of thermodynamic data indicates the transition occurring at 494 °C is due to the formation of a liquid phase. Experimental testing determined the density of this system is a linear function of temperature and can be represented by the equation ρ = 4.014–0.0010T(°C), R 2 = 0.992. Additionally, by using atomistic modeling, we found that increasing the PuCl 3 content from 5 to 10 mol % led to the formation of larger Pu 3+ clusters and slower transport of ions.

Ultrafast Carrier Self-Trapping Driven by Strong Exciton–Phonon Coupling in 2D MA 3 Bi 2 I 6 Cl 3 Perovskite

Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid bismuth halide perovskites have emerged as promising lead-free materials for optoelectronic applications due to their solution processability and tunable structures. Here, in this study, we investigate 2D layered hybrid perovskite MA 3 Bi 2 I 6 Cl 3 using temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Our results reveal strong coupling between excitons and phonons, evidenced by giant Huang–Rhys factors, coherent phonon oscillations, and ultrafast carrier self-trapping into small-polaron and self-trapped exciton (STE) states. These processes appear as time-dependent ground-state bleach and photoinduced absorption features, highlighting the influence of the lattice in carrier dynamics. Wavelength- and time-resolved measurements reveal that PL emission is dominated by STEs, while free exciton emission is weak and short-lived. By comparing 2D MA 3 Bi 2 I 6 Cl 3 with 0D MA 3 Bi 2 I 9 , which contains molecularly isolated [BiI 6 ] 3− octahedra and 2D MA 3 Bi 2 Br 9 perovskites, we demonstrate how halide composition and structural dimensionality influence the balance between free exciton populations and carrier localization. These insights uncover the intrinsic kinetic landscape of photoexcited states in MA 3 Bi 2 I 6 Cl 3 . Overall, our study contributes to a mechanistic understanding of exciton–phonon interactions in lead-free 2D perovskites.

Epitaxial (Al x Ga 1-x-y In y ) 2 O 3 Alloys Lattice Matched to Monoclinic Ga 2 O 3 Substrates

We have epitaxially stabilized a series of monoclinic (Al x Ga 1-x-y In y ) 2 O 3 alloys by careful choice of molecular beam epitaxy growth conditions, which balance alloy growth with suboxide desorption. The films are pseudomorphic to (010) β-Ga 2 O 3 substrates at thicknesses up to 150 nm with compositions ranging from (Al 0.01 Ga 0.83 In 0.16 ) 2 O 3 to (Al 0.24 Ga 0.75 In 0.03 ) 2 O 3 . The absorption edge shifts from approximately 4.62-5.14 eV with coincidently increasing Al and decreasing In mole fractions. J-V measurements reveal an increase in resistivity over four orders of magnitude with a maximum value of 4.2 x 10 5 Ω-cm for (Al 0.17 Ga 0.76 In 0.07 ) 2 O 3 , which has nearly identical lattice parameters (both in-plane and out-of-plane) to the underlying β-Ga 2 O 3 . Scanning transmission electron microscopy of this sample reveals a mostly uniform and single crystalline film, though we identify areas of non-uniform In incorporation and some γ-phase inclusions. This work demonstrates the feasibility of thick layers lattice-matched to β-Ga 2 O 3 with increased bandgap compared to phase-separation limited (Al,Ga) 2 O 3 . These alloys can enable higher bandgap epitaxial dielectrics and high sheet charge density transistors by increasing the conduction band offset with respect to β-Ga 2 O 3 .

Optical coherence and energy-level properties of a Tm 3+ -doped LiNbO 3 waveguide at subKelvin temperatures

We characterize the optical coherence and energy-level properties of the 795-nm 3 H 6 to 3 H 4 transition of Tm 3+ in a Ti 4+ :LiNbO 3 waveguide at temperatures as low as 0.65 K. Coherence properties are measured with varied temperature, magnetic field, optical excitation power and wavelength, and measurement timescale. We also investigate nuclear spin-induced hyperfine structure and population dynamics with varying magnetic field and laser excitation power. Except for accountable differences due to different Ti 4+ - and Tm 3+ -doping concentrations, we find that the properties of Tm 3+ :Ti 4+ :LiNbO 3 produced by indiffusion doping are consistent with those of a bulk-doped Tm 3+ :LiNbO 3 crystal measured under similar conditions. Furthermore, our results, which complement previous work in a narrower parameter space, support using rare-earth ions for integrated optical and quantum signal processing.

Suppression of ferromagnetism governed by a critical lattice parameter in CeTiGe 3 with hydrostatic pressure or V substitution

We combine structural and magnetic measurements to compare the different magnetic phase diagrams between the pressure and substitution studies in CeTiGe 3 . We report on the structural, magnetic, and electrical transport properties of single crystals of CeTi 1–x V x Ge 3 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.9, and 1), and of polycrystalline samples (x = 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8), as well as structural properties of CeTiGe 3 under pressure up to 9 GPa. The ferromagnetic ordering in CeTiGe 3 is suppressed with V doping in CeTi 1–x V x Ge 3 , and suggests a possible ferromagnetic quantum critical point near x = 0.45. We perform a detailed crystalline electric field (CEF) analysis, and the magnetic susceptibility data in pure CeTiGe 3 and CeVGe 3 can be well explained by the CEF model. The proposed CEF energy levels suggest that there is a gradual change of the ground state from |±5/2 in CeTiGe 3 to |±1/2 in CeVGe 3 , and a suppression of CEF splitting energies near the quantum critical region. When hydrostatic pressure is used instead of chemical substitution, the quantum critical point is avoided by the appearance of magnetic phases above around 4.1 GPa. In the substitution study, the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic regions are well separated, whereas they touch in the pressure study. We observe a different trend in the temperature dependence of the resistivity maximum in both studies, suggesting that the CEF splitting energy is suppressed by V substitution but enhanced by pressure. Here, we also observe different responses in lattice constants between the two studies, highlighting the fact that substitution effects cannot be reduced to chemical pressure effects only. Nevertheless, when the magnetic phase diagrams of both hydrostatic pressure and substitution are compared, we find a common critical lattice constant c = 5.78 Å where the ferromagnetic ordering is suppressed in both studies.

Direct experimental evidence of tunable charge transfer at the LaNiO 3 / CaMnO 3 ferromagnetic interface

Interfacial charge transfer in oxide heterostructures gives rise to a rich variety of electronic and magnetic phenomena. Designing heterostructures where one of the thin-film components exhibits a metal-insulator transition opens a promising avenue for controlling such phenomena both statically and dynamically. In this work, we utilize a combination of depth-resolved soft x-ray standing-wave and hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopies in conjunction with polarization-dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy to investigate the effects of the metal-insulator transition in LaNiO 3 on the electronic and magnetic states at the LaNiO 3 /CaMnO 3 interface. Here, we report a direct observation of the reduced effective valence state of the interfacial Mn cations in the metallic superlattice with an above-critical LaNiO 3 thickness (6 unit cells, u.c.) facilitated by the charge transfer of itinerant Ni 3d e g electrons into the interfacial CaMnO 3 layer. Conversely, in an insulating superlattice with a below-critical LaNiO 3 thickness of 2 u.c., a homogeneous effective valence state of Mn is observed throughout the CaMnO 3 layers due to the blockage of charge transfer across the interface. The ability to switch and tune interfacial charge transfer enables precise control of the emergent ferromagnetic state at the LaNiO 3 /CaMnO 3 interface and, thus, has far-reaching consequences on the future strategies for the design of next-generation spintronic devices.

Thermal conductivity of the quasi-one-dimensional materials TaSe 3 and ZrTe 3

The high breakdown current densities and resilience to scaling of the metallic transition metal trichalcogenides TaSe 3 and ZrTe 3 make them of interest for possible interconnect applications, and it motivates this study of their thermal conductivities and phonon properties. These crystals consist of planes of strongly bonded one-dimensional chains more weakly bonded to neighboring chains. Phonon dispersions and the thermal conductivity tensors are calculated using density functional theory combined with an iterative solution of the phonon Boltzmann transport equation. The phonon velocities and the thermal conductivities of TaSe 3 are considerably more anisotropic than those of ZrTe 3 . The maximum LA velocity in ZrTe 3 occurs in the cross-chain direction, and this is consistent with the strong cross-chain bonding that gives rise to large Fermi velocities in that direction. The thermal conductivities are similar to those of other metallic two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides. At room temperature, a significant portion of the heat is carried by the optical modes. In the low frequency range, the phonon lifetimes and mean free paths in TaSe 3 are considerably shorter than those in ZrTe 3 . Here, we find that the shorter lifetimes in TaSe 3 are consistent with the presence of lower frequency optical branches and zone-folding features in the acoustic branches that arise due to the doubling of the TaSe 3 unit cell within the plane.
