Yakima River Basin Temporal Study: Sensor and Sample Data from Wenas Creek following the Evans Canyon Fire in Washington, USA

The Evans Canyon Fire occurred in Washington in August 2020 and burned 76,000 acres of the semi-arid shrub-steppe landscape at low to moderate severities. This fire burned across the Wenas Creek watershed, allowing for a sampling design that included a portion of the stream within the burned area and a reference site upstream of the burn. Monthly data was collected at an unburned (W10) and burned (W20) site from November 2020 to August 2022 for in situ hydrological and water chemistry sensor data, handheld sensor water chemistry data, general environmental context photos, and field metadata. This dataset is comprised of one folder with field photos and one main data folder containing (1) sensor and sample field protocols; (2) file-level metadata (flmd); (3) data dictionary (dd); (4) international geo-sample number (IGSN) mapping file; (5) field metadata; (6) readme; (7) methods codes; (8) dissolved organic carbon (DOC; measured as non-purgeable organic carbon; NPOC); (9) total nitrogen (TN); (10) total suspended solids (TSS); (11) sensor data (specific conductance, pH, total dissolved solids, temperature, pressure, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity) averages; and (12) sensor installation methods. All files are .csv, .jpg, .jpeg, or .pdf.

Effect of microstructure and neutron irradiation defects on deuterium retention in SiC

Retention of hydrogen isotopes is a critical concern for operating fusion reactors as retained tritium both activates components and removes scarce fuel from the fuel cycle. Radiation-induced displacement damage in SiC influences the retention of hydrogen isotopes compared to pristine SiC. Deuterium retention in neutron irradiated high purity SiC has been compared to different microstructures of non-irradiated high purity SiC using thermal desorption spectroscopy after gas charging and low energy ion implantation. Experimental results show lower deuterium retention in single crystal SiC than in polycrystal SiC indicating that grain boundaries are key trapping features in unirradiated SiC. Deuterium is released at lower temperatures in neutron irradiated polycrystal SiC compared to pristine polycrystal SiC, suggesting weaker trapping by radiation-induced defects compared to grain boundary trapping sites in the pristine materials. Low energy ion implantation caused a high deuterium release temperature, highlighting the sensitivity of deuterium release behaviour to radiation defect characteristics. First principles calculations have been conducted to identify energetically favourable trapping sites in SiC at the H ABc V Si and H TSi V C complexes, and migration barriers between interstitial sites. This helps interpret experimental results and derive effective diffusivity of hydrogen isotopes in SiC in the presence of vacancies.

Interplanetary Discontinuities in Corotating Streams and Their Interaction Regions

In this study, we investigate the discontinuity properties in the low altitude corotating stream regions which are encountered during Ulyssses traveling from the south to north heliographic poles in 1995. Through the occurrence rates of directional discontinuites and tangential discontinuities, we find that there are three different regions around a high speed stream.
