Integrated Methane Monitoring Platform Extension, Volume I: Final Technical Report

The IMMPE project, DE-FE0032284, was to enhance methane monitoring technologies and their applications across various natural gas asset classes. The scope included deploying advanced methane detection and monitoring technologies to identify and mitigate fugitive methane emissions, measuring emission rates, and assessing impacts. The findings included the successful mitigation of identified emissions and quantification of emission rates. A key outcome was the development of a comprehensive template and summary of recommendations for methane emissions monitoring, which is replicable for both upstream and downstream applications. Furthermore, the project emphasized the importance of education by providing training opportunities for technicians and regulators, thereby fostering awareness and promoting the adoption of cost-effective methane emissions monitoring and management techniques.

Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Office Exploration EVA System Technical Standards

The purpose of this Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Office specification is to define the types of Programmatic-level standards to be used for design, manufacturing, testing, and quality control for the Exploration EVA (xEVA) System. The xEVA system includes both space suits and EVA hardware elements (e. EVA Tools, Airlock hardware, etc.). Many of the standards referenced in this document can be substituted for similar standards used in industry; this document provides the scope of which standards need to be considered. This document is the EVA-centric implementation of Chapter 3 of NPR 7120.10, Technical Standards for National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Programs and Projects: Select technical standards for use as program/project requirements. This also addresses the intent of Section 2.2.6 of NPR 8705.2, Human-Rating Requirements for Space Systems.

Development of Gyrosole™ and Solar Thermal HVAC Technology for 20-60kW Applications, Final Report, CRADA No. TC02164.0

This was a collaborative effort between Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC as manager and operator of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and Sol Xorce LLC to develop LLNL’s Gyrosole™ solar thermal energy system. The original scope of the CRADA project was to develop LLNL’s Gyrosole™thermal-powered motor technology for solar thermal energy system use, and was originally entitled, "Development of Gyrosole™ Solar Thermal Technology for 20-60 kW Applications". The scope and title of the project were later modified under Amendment One to the CRADA. The technical objective of this CRADA project was to develop Gyrosole™ motor technology so that it is marketplace-ready, and to produce a motor prototype that: Produces 50kW power at >22% efficiency; Operates oil-free; Has sufficient reliability and lifetime to be suitable for both commercial and residential applications; Costs less than $100 per kW installed to produce at scale; and, Can be combined cost-effectively to produce 200kW. The motor prototype would be integrated into model systems that provide electricity generation in combination with air/water heating, heat-pump driven cooling, desiccant dehumidification, and light industrial heat supply.

Nuclear Physics of Compact Binaries with GADGET

The research goal of this project was to experimentally constrain the thermonuclear rate of the 15 O(α, Υ) 19 Ne reaction, whose uncertainty has a strong influence on the modeling of astrophysical Type-I X-ray bursts on accreting neutron stars. To this end, Experiment 21072 was run in November 2022 at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams using the GADGET II detection system. The limited scope and duration of this award included work in the year following the experiment: drafting a technical paper on the time projection chamber of the GADGET II detection system, and analysis of data from Experiment 21072. The award contributed to the education and development of the scientific and technical workforce by partially supporting one postdoctoral Research Associate who did this work.

Approach to an Affordable and Productive Space Transportation System

This paper describes an approach for creating space transportation architectures that are affordable, productive, and sustainable. The architectural scope includes both flight and ground system elements, and focuses on their compatibility to achieve a technical solution that is operationally productive, and also affordable throughout its life cycle. Previous papers by the authors and other members of the Space Propulsion Synergy Team (SPST) focused on space flight system engineering methods, along with operationally efficient propulsion system concepts and technologies. This paper follows up previous work by using a structured process to derive examples of conceptual architectures that integrate a number of advanced concepts and technologies. The examples are not intended to provide a near-term alternative architecture to displace current near-term design and development activity. Rather, the examples demonstrate an approach that promotes early investments in advanced system concept studies and trades (flight and ground), as well as in advanced technologies with the goal of enabling highly affordable, productive flight and ground space transportation systems.

INL ART AGR-5/6/7 PIE at Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Idaho National Laboratory (INL) Advanced Reactor Technologies (ART) is currently supporting a tristructural isotropic (TRISO) fuel development and qualification program, which includes fuel fabrication, test irradiations, and post-irradiation examination (PIE) and safety testing to assess fuel performance during normal irradiation and under potential accident conditions. PIE fuel work from the final test irradiation (Advanced Gas Reactor [AGR]-5/6/7) is expected to commence at INL in early 2021, but the PIE preparations work began in FY2016. The work scope in this statement of work includes Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) providing project management and technical support to PIE-related activities; technical input to the moisture/air-ingress furnace design, fabrication, and equipment qualification; and technical support for development of equipment and techniques for planned PIE evolutions.

Energy Efficient, Incrementally Scalable, Continuous Basalt Fiber Manufacturing Process (Final Technical Report)

This project focused on new materials, bushing materials, that had the ability to produce continuous basalt or glass fiber. The original scope of the project was designed to identify bushing materials and produce fiber, but that scope did change during the program. The team put significant work into bushing material development in the place of producing fiber. The final bushing materials had to be able to produce fiber and the final sets of the project saw single strands of fiber be produced. The final materials selected was a unique MMC bushing composition. Using advanced chemistry, the interface chemistry was tailored between metallic and ceramic powders. Powders and fibers were consolidated using cold isostatic pressing and electrified ceramic hot pressing to form a near net shape composite bushing.
