An Investigation of State-Space Model Fidelity for SSME Data

In previous studies, a variety of unsupervised anomaly detection techniques for anomaly detection were applied to SSME (Space Shuttle Main Engine) data. The observed results indicated that the identification of certain anomalies were specific to the algorithmic method under consideration. This is the reason why one of the follow-on goals of these previous investigations was to build an architecture to support the best capabilities of all algorithms. We appeal to that goal here by investigating a cascade, serial architecture for the best performing and most suitable candidates from previous studies. As a precursor to a formal ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) curve analysis for validation of resulting anomaly detection algorithms, our primary focus here is to investigate the model fidelity as measured by variants of the AIC (Akaike Information Criterion) for state-space based models. We show that placing constraints on a state-space model during or after the training of the model introduces a modest level of suboptimality. Furthermore, we compare the fidelity of all candidate models including those embodying the cascade, serial architecture. We make recommendations on the most suitable candidates for application to subsequent anomaly detection studies as measured by AIC-based criteria.

Solar Absorptance and Thermal Emittance of Some Common Spacecraft Thermal-Control Coatings

Solar absorptance and thermal emittance of spacecraft materials are critical parameters in determining spacecraft temperature control. Because thickness, surface preparation, coatings formulation, manufacturing techniques, etc. affect these parameters, it is usually necessary to measure the absorptance and emittance of materials before they are used. Absorptance and emittance data for many common types of thermal control coatings, are together with some sample spectral data curves of absorptance. In some cases for which ultraviolet and particle radiation data are available, the degraded absorptance and emittance values are also listed.

A Survey of Methods for Measuring Thermally Induced Distortions of Test Articles Undergoing Solar Thermal Vacuum Test

Various methods of measuring the small thermally induced distortions experienced either by various points on the space vehicles or by deviations of surfaces from a known shape during solar thermal vacuum tests are examined. State-of-the-art application of both photographic and real time observation are discussed. The relative merits of each of the methods are compared and evaluated in their applications to different types of test articles and situations. Magnitudes of thermally induced distortions which may be expected to be routinely measurable by the various methods are presented and compared.

Radiation-Conditioned Ti–hBN Coatings for Space Mechanisms: Bridging Tribology and Irradiation Effects from Laboratory to Low-Earth Orbit

The longevity of tribological components in extraterrestrial environments is challenged by abrasive regolith, extreme temperatures, and ionizing radiation. This study evaluates the performance of vacuum plasma sprayed (VPS) Ti-2vol.% hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) coatings applied to joint mechanisms such as rod and slot, ball and socket, and hinge assemblies, fabricated from Al6061 and Ti6Al4V for planetary structures. Coated and uncoated samples were tested under vacuum with lunar regolith simulant (JSC-1A), followed by environmental exposures including electron radiation and thermal cycling. Results show that coated samples consistently outperformed uncoated counterparts across all configurations. Wear depth in coated components was reduced by over 80%, as confirmed by 3D profilometry and surface imaging. SEM analysis revealed severe abrasion and localized plastic deformation in uncoated surfaces, while coated samples retained structural integrity due to synergy of hard protective phases formed during deposition and retained hBN providing solid lubrication in the sliding surface. Coated and exposed samples exhibited smoother actuation profiles and reduced friction, indicating a beneficial "conditioning" effect from environmental exposure. The coatings-maintained performance even on complex geometries with minimal delamination. These findings demonstrate the potential of VPS Ti-hBN coatings to extend the operational life of lunar mechanisms, bridging laboratory-scale tribology with flight-relevant mechanical applications.

Metallurgical and Thermal Properties of 57Ni-40Ti-3Hf (wt%)

Selected properties of 57Ni-40Ti-3Hf (wt%) were measured to further develop this material for use in aerospace rolling-element bearings. The average grain size and microindentation hardness of the material at room temperature were 90 μm and 549 HV, respectively. From room temperature to 500 °C, electrical resistivity increased from 8.9×10–7 to 11.3×10–7 Ω⋅m, thermal expansion coefficients varied from 1.1×10–5 to 1.2×10–5 mm/mm⋅°C, specific heat increased from 0.44 to 0.53 W⋅sec/g⋅K, thermal diffusivity rose from approximately 0.003 to 0.005 cm2/sec and thermal conductivity increased from approximately 0.09 to 0.19 W/cm⋅K. The behavior of the material can be explained by well-known metallurgical theory. These results are expected to provide a basis for design and modeling of future aerospace components.
