Task-Specific Phosphonium Iongels by Fast UV-Photopolymerization for Solid-State Sodium Metal Batteries

Sodium metal batteries are an emerging technology that shows promise in terms of materials availability with respect to lithium batteries. Solid electrolytes are needed to tackle the safety issues related to sodium metal. In this work, a simple method to prepare a mechanically robust and efficient soft solid electrolyte for sodium batteries is demonstrated. A task-specific iongel electrolyte was prepared by combining in a simple process the excellent performance of sodium metal electrodes of an ionic liquid electrolyte and the mechanical properties of polymers. The iongel was synthesized by fast (<1 min) UV photopolymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) in the presence of a saturated 42%mol solution of sodium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (NaFSI) in trimethyl iso-butyl phosphonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (P111i4FSI). The resulting soft solid electrolytes showed high ionic conductivity at room temperature (≥10 -3 S cm -1 ) and tunable storage modulus (10 4 –10 7 Pa). Iongel with the best ionic conductivity and good mechanical properties (Iongel10) showed excellent battery performance: Na/iongel/NaFePO 4 full cells delivered a high specific capacity of 140 mAh g -1 at 0.1 C and 120 mAh g -1 at 1 C with good capacity retention after 30 cycles.

Carbonic Anhydrase Enhanced UV-Crosslinked PEG-DA/PEO Extruded Hydrogel Flexible Filaments and Durable Grids for CO 2 Capture

In this study, poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate/poly (ethylene oxide) (PEG-DA/PEO) interpenetrating polymer network hydrogels (IPNH) were extruded into 1D filaments and 2D grids. The suitability of this system for enzyme immobilization and CO 2 capture application was validated. IPNH chemical composition was verified spectroscopically using FTIR. The extruded filament had an average tensile strength of 6.5 MPa and elongation at break of 80%. IPNH filament can be twisted and bent and therefore is suitable for further processing using conventional textile fabrication methods. Initial activity recovery of the entrapped carbonic anhydrase (CA) calculated from esterase activity, showed a decrease with an increase in enzyme dose, while activity retention of high enzyme dose samples was over 87% after 150 days of repeated washing and testing. IPNH 2D grids that were assembled into spiral roll structured packings exhibited increased CO 2 capture efficiency with increasing enzyme dose. Long-term CO 2 capture performance of the CA immobilized IPNH structured packing was tested in a continuous solvent recirculation experiment for 1032 h, where 52% of the initial CO 2 capture performance and 34% of the enzyme contribution were retained. These results demonstrate the feasibility of using rapid UV-crosslinking to form enzyme-immobilized hydrogels by a geometrically-controllable extrusion process that uses analogous linear polymers for both viscosity enhancement and chain entanglement purposes, and achieves high activity retention and performance stability of the immobilized CA. Potential uses for this system extend to 3D printing inks and enzyme immobilization matrices for such diverse applications as biocatalytic reactors and biosensor fabrication.

BVR{sub C}I{sub C} Observations and Analysis of the UV LEO-type Binary, the Pre-WUMa, V1023 Persei

V1023 Per is a polar spotted, but well-detached dwarf binary, very likely a Pre-WUMa eclipsing binary. It was observed on 11 nights in 2015 October, November, and December at Dark Sky Observatory in North Carolina with the 0.81 m reflector of Appalachian State University. The period behavior is complex and may be increasing with a cubic or quadratic ephemeris. Its odd light curves are of high amplitude but have no totality and reach maximum light just before and following the secondary eclipse, indicating that it has polar spots similar to UV Leo. The 28 yr orbital period study calls the attention of observers to further monitor this binary to understand the complex nature of the period evolution. Its presently fixed polar spot does indicate that it must have a strong magnetic field and that it is synchronously rotating. The BVR{sub c}I{sub c} simultaneous 2016 Wilson–Devinney program (W-D) solution gives fillouts of 68% and 75% for the primary and secondary components, respectively. The polar position of the spot, its radius (24°), and T-fact (0.75) indicate that a strong magnetic field is present. The small ΔT in the components (∼289 K) show that the stars are similar in spectral type despite them being well detached. The inclination is high, ∼85.°19 ± 0.°04, but there is not a total eclipse due to the high mass ratio (∼0.739 ± 0.001). Due to the low galactic position (longitude = 150.°390, latitude = −1.°023), its reddening is addressed. The primary components temperature is estimated to be 5250 ± 250 K.

The Circumstellar Gas of Phi Leonis in the UV

HST UV spectra were obtained to study whether the φ Leo system has one or more stellar companions, as shown for the A-star dwarf, HR10, stellar pulsation, or transiting exocomets. During five partial HST observation sets spread over 13 months, redshifted gas with radial velocities up to +245 km s{sup -1} was observed on one occasion, with lower velocity infalling material seen twice. Blueshifted gas features with velocities as high as -150 km s{sup -1} with up to three features in two spectra were also seen. Low-mass stellar companions to late A stars are coronal sources. Assuming an age of 450 Myr, G-K companions to φ Leo, and multiple M-star companions would have been detected in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey data, but are not seen. Further, the star shows only 1 major pulsation component, suggesting it is single, excluding an A- or early F-star companion. Low covering factor absorption features with |v| ≤ 200 km s{sup -1} have been reported in optical spectra with variation on timescales consistent with nonradial pulsation. However, the highest velocity infall feature has a broader, continuous absorption profile extending from the stellar velocity to +245 km s{sup -1}, with a covering factor of ~25% which is more consistent with a transit by a body on a star-grazing orbit.

The Young and Nearby Normal Type Ia Supernova 2018gv: UV-optical Observations and the Earliest Spectropolarimetry

The nondetection of companion stars in SN Ia progenitor systems lends support to the notion of double-degenerate systems and explosions triggered by the merging of two white dwarfs. This very asymmetric process should lead to a conspicuous polarimetric signature. By contrast, observations consistently find very low continuum polarization as the signatures from the explosion process largely dominate over the pre-explosion configuration within several days. Critical information about the interaction of the ejecta with a companion and any circumstellar matter is encoded in the early polarization spectra. In this study, we obtain spectropolarimetry of SN 2018gv with the ESO Very Large Telescope at -13.6 days relative to the B-band maximum light, or ~5 days after the estimated explosion—the earliest spectropolarimetric observations to date of any SN Ia. These early observations still show a low continuum polarization (lesssim0.2%) and moderate line polarization (0.30% ± 0.04% for the prominent Si ii λ6355 feature and 0.85% ± 0.04% for the high-velocity Ca component). The high degree of spherical symmetry implied by the low-line and continuum polarization at this early epoch is consistent with explosion models of delayed detonations and is inconsistent with the merger-induced explosion scenario. Finally, the dense UV and optical photometry and optical spectroscopy within the first ~100 days after the maximum light indicate that SN 2018gv is a normal SN Ia with similar spectrophotometric behavior to SN 2011fe.

The Rapid X-Ray and UV Evolution of ASASSN-14ko

Abstract ASASSN-14ko is a recently discovered periodically flaring transient at the center of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) ESO 253−G003 with a slowly decreasing period. Here, we show that the flares originate from the northern, brighter nucleus in this dual-AGN, post-merger system. The light curves for the two flares that occurred in 2020 May and September are nearly identical over all wavelengths. For both events, Swift observations showed that the UV and optical wavelengths brightened in unison. The effective temperature of the UV/optical emission rises and falls with the increase and subsequent decline in the luminosity. The X-ray flux, by contrast, first rapidly drops over ∼2.6 days, rises for ∼5.8 days, drops again over ∼4.3 days, and then recovers. The X-ray spectral evolution of the two flares differ, however. During the 2020 May peak the spectrum softened with increases in the X-ray luminosity, while we observed the reverse for the 2020 September peak. We found a small change in the period derivative, which seems to indicate that the system does not have a static period derivative and there is some stochasticity in its evolution.

Quasar UV Luminosity Function at 3.5 < z < 5.0 from SDSS Deep Imaging Data

We present a well-designed sample of more than 1000 type 1 quasars at 3.5 < z < 5 and derive UV quasar luminosity functions (QLFs) in this redshift range. These quasars were selected using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) imaging data in the Stripe 82 and overlap regions with repeat imaging observations that are about 1 mag fainter than the SDSS single-epoch data. The follow-up spectroscopic observations were conducted by the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) as one of the BOSS ancillary programs. Reaching i ~ 21.5 mag, our sample bridges previous samples from brighter and deeper surveys. We use a 1/V a method to derive binned QLFs at 3.6 < z < 4.0, 4.0 < z < 4.5, and 4.5 < z < 4.9 and then use a double power-law model to parameterize the QLFs. We also combine our data with literature QLFs to better constrain the QLFs across a much wider luminosity baseline. The faint- and bright-end slopes of the QLFs in this redshift range are around –1.7 and –3.7, respectively, with uncertainties from 0.2 to 0.3 to >0.5. The evolution of the QLFs from z ~ 5 to 3.5 can be described by a pure density evolution model (∝10 kz ) with a parameter k similar to that at 5 < z < 7, suggesting a nearly uniform evolution of the quasar density at z = 3.5–7.

Impact of UV-light and pH on the Fate of Tc, I, and U in Wetlands at Savannah River Site - 20230

The Savannah River Site (SRS) is one of the major nuclear facilities owned by the U.S Department of Energy. During the Cold War, these facilities produced large amounts of radioactive and hazardous waste. On site, three unlined seepage basins in the F-Area received approximately 1.8 billion gallons of low-level waste containing nitric acid, radionuclides, and dissolved metals due to plutonium and tritium production operations. The acidic nature of the waste created a source of relatively mobile radionuclides below the basins. Radionuclides previously disposed of within the F-Area, including uranium isotopes (U), technetium-99 (Tc-99), and iodine-129 (I-129), are moving with groundwater towards Four Mile Branch Wetland, where they are subsequently upwelling and interacting with natural organic matter (NOM). Many environmental factors including redox conditions, porewater composition, pH, light, and temperature affect the degradation of organic matter as well as interactions with Tc-99, U, and I-129. In particular, the high concentrations of nitrate from the acidic waste may increase the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that impact both degradation of NOM and behavior of contaminants. In the presence of sunlight, I-129, Tc-99, and U speciation and complexation behavior may be affected by ROS and NOM degradation products in addition to the factors generally considered in subsurface systems in the absence of light. This research aims to determine whether the interactions between radionuclides, NOM, and nitrate affect the fate of I-129, Tc-99, and U and which processes are controlling their behavior. Experiments were conducted at variable pH in the presence of NaNO{sub 3} in order to determine the impact of light and pH on NOM degradation and to evaluate the impact on the fate of contaminants of concern. Soil samples high in NOM collected from two sites in the Southeastern United States (Savannah River Site and the Everglades) were studied. Batch experiments were conducted with NOM and the following aqueous contaminants, U, I-129, Tc-99 with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light in an environmental chamber. This study was conducted in a sterile environment in order to exclude the potential for microbial degradation of organic matter. Results indicated photodegradation of NOM and significant interaction of radionuclides with NOM. (authors)

Design of a high-temperature cell for cobalt-60 irradiations of aqueous solutions with in situ UV–visible spectroscopy

To understand the speciation of solutes in aqueous solutions in high temperature radiation environments, we report the design and fabrication of a custom-built, high temperature (≤300 °C) titanium irradiation cell with in situ optical spectroscopy capabilities, as afforded by coupled fiber optic cables. The wetted surfaces of the 8-inch tall cylindrical cell with 3.5 in. diameter are entirely made of titanium, sapphire, and gold, which are chemically and radiolytically inert. The initial benchmarking results are reported, including the baseline spectrum of deionized water as a function of temperature, the stability of a spectrum over 4 h at 100 °C, and an irradiated Fricke dosimetry solution under ambient irradiator temperature conditions (27.0 ± 0.5 °C). Further, the average gamma radiation dose rate in the cell in its current configuration is 26.1 ± 1.3 Gy min -1 . This cell has application in studying several processes throughout the nuclear fuel cycle, including the reactor coolant behavior.

UV hybrid photon detector based on GaN photocathodes and Si low gain avalanche diode

Photon detectors featuring single-photon sensitivity play a crucial role in various scientific domains, including high-energy physics, astronomy, and quantum optics. Fast response time, high quantum efficiency, and minimal dark counts are the characteristics that render them ideal candidates for detecting individual photons with exceptional signal-to-noise ratios, at frequencies in the range of hundreds of MHz. Here, in this study, we report on our first design and operational results on a Hybrid Photon Detector (HPD) that combines the high quantum efficiency of a Gallium Nitride (GaN) photocathode and the low noise characteristics of a Si-based Low-Gain Avalanche Diode (LGAD). This hybrid detection scheme has the potential to reach single-photon detection sensitivity with high quantum efficiency, low noise levels and capable of operating at hundreds of MHz repetition rates.

NACHOS, a CubeSat-based high-resolution UV-Visible hyperspectral imager for remote sensing of trace gases: system overview and science objectives

Here, the Nano-satellite Atmospheric Chemistry Hyperspectral Observation System (NACHOS) is a high-throughput (f/2.9), high spectral resolution (~1.3 nm optical resolution, 0.6 nm sampling) Offner-design hyperspectral imager operating in the 300-500 nm spectral region. The 1.5U instrument payload (1U optical system, 0.5U electronics module) is hosted by a 1.5U LANL-designed CubeSat bus to comprise a 3U complete satellite. Spectroscopically similar to NASA’s Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), which provides wide-field global mapping of ozone and other gases at coarse spatial resolution, NACHOS fills the complementary niche of targeted measurements at much higher spatial resolution. With 350 across-track spatial pixels and a 15-degree across-track field of view, NACHOS will provide spectral imaging at roughly 0.4 km per pixel from 500 km altitude. NACHOS incorporates highly streamlined gas-retrieval algorithms for rapid onboard processing, alleviating the need to routinely downlink massive hyperspectral data cubes. We will discuss the instrument design, challenges in achieving mechanical robustness to launch vibration in such a compact instrument, the onboard calibration system, and gas-retrieval data downlink strategy. We will also discuss potential science missions, including monitoring of NO 2 as an easily detected proxy for anthropogenic fossil-fuel greenhouse gases, monitoring lowlevel SO 2 degassing at pre-eruptive volcanoes, H 2 CO from wildfires, and characterization of aerosols. The long-term vision is for a many-satellite constellation that could provide both high spatial resolution and frequent revisits for selected targets of interest. As an initial technology demonstration of this vision, the NACHOS project is currently slated to launch two CubeSats in early 2022.

Vapor‐Phase Infiltrated Organic–Inorganic Positive‐Tone Hybrid Photoresist for Extreme UV Lithography

Abstract Continuing extreme downscaling of semiconductor devices, essential for high performance and energy efficiency of future microelectronics, hinges on extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUVL) and addressing associated challenges. One of such challenges is a need for improved EUV photoresists featuring simultaneously high sensitivity, resolution, and etch selectivity. Here, a new, positive‐tone, organic–inorganic hybrid EUV photoresist is demonstrated that delivers a high‐resolution EUVL and electron‐beam lithography (EBL) patterning capability combined with high sensitivity and etch resistance. The new resist, poly(methyl methacrylate) infiltrated with indium oxide (PMMA‐InO x ), is synthesized via vapor‐phase infiltration (VPI), a material hybridization technique derived from atomic layer deposition. The weak binding of the gaseous indium precursor, trimethylindium, to the carbonyl group in PMMA allows the synthesis of hybrids with inorganic content distributed uniformly in the resist, enabling high EUVL and EBL sensitivities (18 mJ cm −2 and 300 µC cm −2 , respectively) and high‐resolution positive‐tone EUVL patterning (e.g., 40 nm half‐pitch line‐space and 50 nm diameter contact hole patterns) with high Si etch selectivity (>30–40). The low exposure doses required to pattern the PMMA‐InO x hybrid resist, high etch resistance, and processing strategies, which are developed, can pave the way for using infiltration‐synthesized hybrid thin films as reliable positive‐tone EUV photoresists for future semiconductor patterning.

Active Tuning of Optical Constants in the Visible–UV: Praseodymium-Doped Ceria—a Model Mixed Ionic–Electronic Conductor

Mixed ionic-electronic conductors offer chemical and electrical means for active tuning of their optical constants, e.g. with variations in oxygen non-stoichiometry in Pr 0.1 Ce 0.9 O 2-δ , enabling implementation of adaptive thin film optical devices. Here, we demonstrate in-situ chemo-tuning of the extinction coefficient in Pr 0.1 Ce 0.9 O 2-δ at elevated temperatures and provide a tuning model that treats the interdependence of mobile oxygen vacancies and small polarons coupled to variations in optically active praseodymium ions. Further, a new means for electro-tuning of the optical constants of mixed ionic-electronic conductors was demonstrated experimentally and modeled for Pr 0.1 Ce 0.9 O 2-δ thin films deposited on grid-like electrode structures. Modeling of non-steady state optical transmittance modulations in the latter allows for estimation of oxygen vacancy mobility that determines the switching speed of the device. Quenched-in values of nr and k to room temperature become nonvolatile, providing a modulation range in the extinction coefficient of Δk ~0.1 (change of ~800%) and in the refractive index of Δn r ~0.1 (relative to initial n r of ~2.35). Key figures of merit including, transmission optical modulation of ~0.04 per 1 mV nm -1 , switching energy per area of 670 pJ μm -2 and switching times of seconds, were demonstrated, with further improvements possible.

Synergistic degradation performance of UV / TiO 2 photocatalysis and biotrickling filtration inoculated with Aspergillus sp. S1 for gaseous m ‐xylene

Abstract Background Biotricking filtration (BTF) based on absorption and biodegradation of waste gas by microorganisms in a biofilm can be used to degrade with difficulty hydrophobic volatile pollutants. Photocatalysis is a promising technology for the abatement of gaseous contaminants because of its nonselective oxidation of volatile organic compounds; however, photocatalysis technology has the limitations of high energy consumption and low mineralization efficiency. This study, therefore, aimed to investigate the synergistic effects of UV/TiO 2 photocatalysis (PCO) pretreatment and BTF in treating gaseous m ‐xylene. Results BTF incubated with a mold, Aspergillus sp. S1, was acclimated with m ‐xylene as the sole carbon source. A combined system of PCO with BTF was developed to remove gaseous m ‐xylene. The results showed that the startup period was shortened by 3 days in the PCO‐BTF combined system compared to that with BTF alone. The removal efficiency reached 73% and 91% for the BTF and PCO‐BTF systems respectively when the empty bed residence time was extended to 90 s. In addition, PCO‐BTF could withstand transient shock loading of m ‐xylene of 5000 mg m −3 and gradually restore its decontamination performance. Conclusions PCO pretreatment was effective in the enhancement of the removal capacity of BTF for m ‐xylene. The PCO‐BTF system proposed in this study provides an attractive alternative to abate hydrophobic volatile pollutants. The integration of PCO essentially prompted the capability of Aspergillus sp. S1 in the BTF unit, which paves the way for the treatment of gaseous waste at an industrial scale. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).
