Visual accommodation experimental studies, with optometer, visual display unit, and eye tracker instrumentation development
Semiautomatic 35-mm photographic slide checkout console optically and electronically verifies registration of slides at a minimum rate of 250/hr. The console compares slide registration with a registration standard within the console. It verifies a binary code number on the bottom of the slide and visually displays its equivalent.
Test trap consists of logic nest of five printed circuit boards, plus power supply within the unit. Device monitors more than one logic area simultaneously, gives visual display of detected error, operates at computer speed, maintains readily available logic description of cards used, and is compatible with existing computer circuitry.
Optical apparatus varies apparent distance of a target image from the eye by means of reflectors that are moved orthogonally to the optical axis between fixed lenses. Apparatus can be pointed at any object, test pattern, or other visual display.
Network of laser beams passes over runway to photodetectors on opposite side, magnitude of beam deflection indicates magnitude of density gradient encountered. Visual display of beam deflections affects go, no-go decision for takeoff and landing.
Analysis of bulk storage data requirements and methods for visual display of information on space shuttle display devices
The development of rapid and accurate wind tunnel techniques to measure convective heating distributions in complex reentry configurations is discussed. Major emphasis was put on the infrared camera technique. Its essence is the measurement of infrared emission from the surface of a wind tunnel model as a function of time. Prior calibration of the infrared camera relates the emission to the surface temperature of the model. The time history of the surface temperature can then be related to the heating rate by standard techniques. The output of the camera is an electrical signal that is tape-recorded in analog form, then digitized and processed by computer, so that automated and relatively rapid data reduction can be accomplished. In addition, the camera produces real-time visual displays of the infrared emission as pictures on an oscilloscope screen. These pictures give immediate indications of hot and cool spots on the model.
The IR emission from the surface of a wind-tunnel model is determined as a function of time with the aid of an infrared-sensitive imaging camera. Prior calibration of the IR camera relates the emission to the surface temperature of the model. The time history of the surface temperature is then related to the heating rate by standard techniques. The output of the camera is recorded in analog form, digitized, and processed by a computer. In addition, real-time visual displays of the IR emissions are obtained as pictures on an oscilloscope screen.
Oculometer provides dynamic measurement of subject's look direction, and its outputs can be used to generate visual display of his look pattern and/or to cause equipment operation associated with his lookpoint at given times. Measured eye-direction information could be used as control input at man/machine interface.
The progress made in achieving TRIS research objectives during the first six months of 1972 is reviewed. The Tech Brief-Technical Support Package Program and technology transfer profiles are presented along with summaries of technology transfer in nondestructive testing, and visual display systems.
Remote manipulator control considered is based on several levels of automatic supervision which derives manipulator commands from an analysis of sensor states and task requirements. Principle sensors are manipulator joint position, tactile, and currents. The tactile sensor states can be displayed visually in perspective or replicated in the operator's control handle of perceived by the automatic supervisor. Studies are reported on control organization, operator performance and system performance measures. Unusual hardware and software details are described.
An analysis of the concept for the hybrid stereo-monoscopic television visual system is reported. The visual concept is described along with the following subsystems: illumination, deployment/articulation, telecommunications, visual displays, and the controls and display station.
Serpentuator is a serpentine teleoperator device for intravehicular and extravehicular activities in space. The serpentuator is simulated using simulation software system MARSYAS and using the Component-Connection Simulation model and the Direct Simulation model. A comparison of the results for the two cases shows that under identical conditions, simulation execution time in the Component-Connection model case is reduced by a factor of the order of 100. A visual display of the serpentuator positions is obtained using the AMTRAN system on the Datacraft DC 6024 computer.
The algorithms employed in the current ERIM data processing scheme are described. Methods for suitable visual display of the results of this processing are discussed.
Description of the digital memory and related computer system used at the Palomar Mountain Observatory. The memory was designed to have a large number of pixels, a high capacity for each pixel, and fast access for use with a variety of image sensors. As an image integration and storage device, this memory is shown to possess ideal properties, namely, it is strictly linear, has a wide dynamic range, and the image does not deteriorate with time. The observer has a visual display which enables him to monitor the image as it is being integrated.-
The effects of visual display dynamics on the altitude tracking performance of a subject in a fixed base flight simulator are considered. The subject, flying the linearized longitudinal equations of motion, attempts to maintain the same altitude as two airplanes positioned three hundred feet ahead, as in level formation flying. The horizon together with the two leading aircraft are represented symbolically on a CRT display. The subject's aircraft is disturbed by atmospheric turbulence. The data indicate a relationship between the bandwidth of the display dynamics and the short period characteristics of the simulated airplane. For an airplane with a relatively fast pitch response the presence of altitude display dynamics, with a bandwidth as high as five times the short period natural frequency, causes significant degradation of altitude tracking performance.
The Serpentuator is a serpentine teleoperator device for intraand extravehicular activities in space. It is simulated using the digital simulation software MARSYAS. Direct Simulation (DS) and Component-Connection Simulation (CCS) models are set up. The simulation execution time for the CCS model is less than that of the DS model by a factor of the order of 100. A visual display of the Serpentuator positions is obtained using AMTRAN.
Search rates were estimated from response latencies in a visual search task of the type used by Atkinson et al. (1969), in which a subject searches a small set of letters to determine the presence or absence of a predesignated target. Half of the visual displays contained a marker above one of the letters. The marked letter was the only one that had to be checked to determine whether or not the display contained the target. The presence of a marker in a display significantly increased the estimated rate of search, but the data clearly indicated that subjects did not restrict processing to the marked item. Letters in the vicinity of the marker were also processed. These results were interpreted as showing that subjects are able to exercise some degree of control over the search process in this type of task.
