FunM2C: A Filter for Uncertainty Visualization of Multivariate Data on Multi-Core Devices

Uncertainty visualization is an emerging research topic in data visualization because neglecting uncertainty in visualization can lead to inaccurate assessments. In this paper, we study the propagation of multivariate data uncertainty in visualization. Although there have been a few advancements in probabilistic uncertainty visualization of multivariate data, three critical challenges remain to be addressed. First, the state-of-the-art probabilistic uncertainty visualization framework is limited to bivariate data (two variables). Second, existing uncertainty visualization algorithms use computationally intensive techniques and lack support for cross-platform portability. Third, as a consequence of the computational expense, integration into production visualization tools is impractical. In this work, we address all three issues and make a threefold contribution. First, we take a step to generalize the state-of-the-art probabilistic framework for bivariate data to multivariate data with an arbitrary number of variables. Second, through utilization of VTK-m’s shared-memory parallelism and cross-platform compatibility features, we demonstrate acceleration of multivariate uncertainty visualization on different many-core architectures, including OpenMP and AMD GPUs. Third, we demonstrate the integration of our algorithms with the ParaView software. We demonstrate the utility of our algorithms through experiments on multivariate simulation data with three and four variables.

Integrating performance data collection, analysis, and visualization

An integrated data collection, analysis, and data visualization environment is described for a specific parallel system - the Intel iPSC/2 hypercube. The data collection components of the environment encompass software event tracing at the operating system with a program level and a hardware-based performance monitoring system used to capture software events. A visualization system based on the X-window environment permits dynamic display and reduction of performance data. A performance data collection, analysis, and visualization environment makes it possible to access the effects of architectural and system software variations.

Digital Twin Technology for Aviation

As technology progresses, so have the tools for data visualization. This project presents a digital twin model of the San Francisco airport displaying a 10-minute window of historical flight data, visualizing the trajectory data of airplanes and vehicles in three dimensions. Multiple different cameras where implemented to fully utilize the 3D visualization. This is a 100:1 feet scale model created in Autodesk Maya, using the airport center as the origin and recalculating all coordinates accordingly featuring the airport, some surrounding buildings, and the bay. For this project, six different models of airplanes were modeled at a 50:1 feet scale with texturing to mimic real-world aircraft models along with certain airlines. The animation is driven through archived data captured from NASA’s Sherlock Open-Data Portal, cleaned of noisy data points, processed into useable data formats, and implemented into a Maya ASCII file of animation paths with the corresponding previously-stated airplane models attached all using Java based conversion program.

Multiomics Data Collection, Visualization, and Utilization for Guiding Metabolic Engineering

Biology has changed radically in the past two decades, growing from a purely descriptive science into also a design science. The availability of tools that enable the precise modification of cells, as well as the ability to collect large amounts of multimodal data, open the possibility of sophisticated bioengineering to produce fuels, specialty and commodity chemicals, materials, and other renewable bioproducts. However, despite new tools and exponentially increasing data volumes, synthetic biology cannot yet fulfill its true potential due to our inability to predict the behavior of biological systems. Here, we showcase a set of computational tools that, combined, provide the ability to store, visualize, and leverage multiomics data to predict the outcome of bioengineering efforts. We show how to upload, visualize, and output multiomics data, as well as strain information, into online repositories for several isoprenol-producing strain designs. We then use these data to train machine learning algorithms that recommend new strain designs that are correctly predicted to improve isoprenol production by 23%. This demonstration is done by using synthetic data, as provided by a novel library, that can produce credible multiomics data for testing algorithms and computational tools. In short, this paper provides a step-by-step tutorial to leverage these computational tools to improve production in bioengineered strains.

International Solar-Terrestrial Program Key Parameter Visualization Tool Data: USA_NASA_DDF_ISTP_KP_0057

The Global Geospace Science Program (GGS) is designed to improve greatly the understanding of the flow of energy, mass and momentum in the solar-terrestrial environment with particular emphasis on "Geospace". The Global Geospace Science Program is the US contribution to the International Solar-Terrestrial Physics (ISTP) Science Initiative. This CD-ROM issue describes the WIND and POLAR spacecraft, the scientific experiments carried onboard, the Theoretical and Ground Based investigations which constitute the US Global Geospace Science Program and the ISTP Data Systems which support the data acquisition and analysis effort. The International Solar-Terrestrial Physics Program (ISTP) Key Parameter Visualization Tool (KPVT), provided on the CD-ROM, was developed at the ISTP Science Planning and Operations Facility (SPOF). The KPVT is a generic software package for visualizing the key parameter data produced from all ISTP missions, interactively and simultaneously. The tool is designed to facilitate correlative displays of ISTP data from multiple spacecraft and instruments, and thus the selection of candidate events and data quality control. The software, written in IDL, includes a graphical/widget user interface, and runs on many platforms, including various UNIX workstations, Alpha/Open VMS, Macintosh (680x0 and PowerPC), and PC/Windows NT, Windows 3.1, and Windows 95.
