Study and design of a cryogenic propellant acquisition system

The development of an acquisition system for supplying subcooled liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen under in-orbit conditions is discussed. The system will be applied to the integrated cryogenic feed requirements for space systems such as a space shuttle cryogenic auxiliary propulsion system (APS) and main propulsion for an advanced spacecraft propulsion module (ASPM). Concepts that use the favorable surface tension characteristics of fine mesh screens are emphasized. The specific objectives of the program are: (1) to evolve conceptual designs for candidate acquisition systems, (2) to formulate the analytical models needed to analyze the systems, and (3) to generate parametric data on overall candidate system performance, characteristics, and operational features in sufficient depth to establish critical design problems and criteria to support a sound system design and evaluation.

Centaur propellant acquisition system study

A study was performed to determine the desirability of replacing the hydrogen peroxide settling system on the Centaur D-1S with a capillary acquisition system. A comprehensive screening was performed to select the most promising capillary device fluid acquisition, thermal conditioning, and fabrication techniques. Refillable start baskets and bypass feed start tanks were selected for detailed design. Critical analysis areas were settling and refilling, start sequence development with an initially dry boost pump, and cooling the fluid delivered to the boost pump in order to provide necessary net position suction head (NPSH). Design drawings were prepared for the start basket and start tank concepts for both LO2 and LH2 tanks. System comparisons indicated that the start baskets using wicking for thermal conditioning, and thermal subcooling for boost pump NPSH, are the most desirable systems for future development.

Software for Digital Acquisition System and Application to Environmental Monitoring

Criteria for selection of a minicomputer for use as a core resident acquisition system were developed for the ODU Mobile Air Pollution Laboratory. A comprehensive data acquisition program named MONARCH was instituted in a DEC-8/E-8K 12-bit computer. Up to 32 analog voltage inputs are scanned sequentially, converted to BCD, and then to actual numbers. As many as 16 external devices (valves or any other two-state device) are controlled independently. MONARCH is written as a foreground-background program, controlled by an external clock which interrupts once per minute. Transducer voltages are averaged over user specified time intervals and, upon completion of any desired time sequence, outputted are: day, hour, minute, second; state of external valves; average value of each analogue voltage (E Format); as well as standard deviations of these values. Output is compatible with any serially addressed media.

A real time, low cost, data acquisition telecommunication network

The real time, low cost data acquisition communication network described features the use of asynchronous ASCII code transmissions operating at 30 characters per second on the dial-up telephone system. The network features an elaborate, but easily generated error checking system, operating in a line-by-line demand-response mode. The system is readily adaptable for any low speed computer-to-computer data transmissions requiring high reliability in data transmission. The network was developed for the acquisition of prelaunch wind data from the Eastern Test Range at Cape Kennedy.

Instrumentation and data acquisition systems

A comprehensive and integrated measurement system was identified and a design and development effort initiated to meet the criteria imposed by the National Transonic Facility operating environment. Specific measurement areas receiving concentrated attention include: data acquisition, force measurement, pressure instrumentation, flow visualization techniques, model attitude and model deformation measurement, and temperature measurement. The NTF instrument complex will be centered around four 32-bit, 1-microsecond-cycle-time central processing units connected in a multipoint-distributed network configuration. The principal activities to be supported by these computers are: (1) data base management and processing; (2) research measurement data acquisition and display; (3) tunnel and model control; and (4) process monitoring and communication control. The distributed network approach was chosen to modularize the functional software into definable and implementable parts by the various groups involved in the design and to permit use of similar hardware configurations to improve reliability and maintainability.

A high-voltage-isolated automated data acquisition system

A data acquisition system for electric-arc heated, high-temperature wind tunnel facilities has been developed; the high voltage isolation of the system exceeds 50 kV. A closed loop, optically coupled data system acquires transducer signals from high-temperature, arc-generated plasmas used for reentry testing. The data acquisition system monitors on-line tests, stores data on magnetic tape, and prints out a paper tape. The system has 400 data channels: 200 low-voltage programmable channels and 200 high-voltage sequential channels.

Use of a priori statistics to minimize acquisition time for RFI immune spread spectrum systems

The optimum acquisition sweep strategy was determined for a PN code despreader when the a priori probability density function was not uniform. A psuedo noise spread spectrum system was considered which could be utilized in the DSN to combat radio frequency interference. In a sample case, when the a priori probability density function was Gaussian, the acquisition time was reduced by about 41% compared to a uniform sweep approach.

Escort - A data acquisition and display system to support research testing

A combination of a central minicomputer and test-site microcomputers has been adopted to provide on-line data acquisition and display service for a large number of different research programs. By integrating the data acquisition and recording functions in the minicomputer/microcomputer system, rapidly updated displays of selected data in terms of engineering units may be obtained. The system described here is primarily designed for steady-state test conditions, but may also provide data on slow transients associated with changing experimental conditions. Application of the system to full-scale jet engine tests, ion thruster assessments and anechoic chamber analyses are mentioned.

Effect of vibration on retention characteristics of screen acquisition systems

The design of surface tension propellant acquisition systems using fine-mesh screen must take into account all factors that influence the liquid pressure differentials within the system. One of those factors is spacecraft vibration. Analytical models to predict the effects of vibration have been developed. A test program to verify the analytical models and to allow a comparative evaluation of the parameters influencing the response to vibration was performed. Screen specimens were tested under conditions simulating the operation of an acquisition system, considering the effects of such parameters as screen orientation and configuration, screen support method, screen mesh, liquid flow and liquid properties. An analytical model, based on empirical coefficients, was most successful in predicting the effects of vibration.
