Architectural Modeling and Analysis for Safety Engineering

Model-based development tools are increasingly being used for system-level development of safety-critical systems. Architectural and behavioral models provide important information that can be leveraged to improve the system safety analysis process. Model-based design artifacts produced in early stage development activities can be used to perform system safety analysis, reducing costs and providing accurate results throughout the system life-cycle. In this report we describe an extension to the Architecture Analysis and Design Language (AADL) that supports modeling of system behavior under failure conditions. This Safety Annex enables the independent modeling of component failures and allows safety engineers to weave various types of fault behavior into the nominal system model. The accompanying tool support uses model checking to propagate errors from their source to their effect on safety properties without the need to add separate propagation specifications. The tool also captures all minimal set of fault combinations that can cause violation of the safety properties, that can be compared to qualitative and quantitative objectives as part of the safety assessment process. We describe the Safety Annex, illustrate its use with a representative example, and discuss and demonstrate the tool support enabling an analyst to investigate the system behavior under failure conditions.

System Engineering & Integration (SE&I) In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) Modeling and Analysis (SIMA)

NASA developed a flexible system modeling framework of integrated ISRU and ISRU related subsystem models: MAIT (Mission Analysis & Integration Tool) that enables point solutions, optimization, and/or parametric studies at the system level to predict mission architecture mass, power, and volume and provides accessible consolidated database that categorizes specific ISRU and ISRU related subsystem variables common between NASA & industry. Directly and indirectly addresses multiple STMD shortfalls: - ISRU-581 - ‘ISRU System Modeling’: Establish a modular end-to-end ISRU system modeling & analysis capability by leveraging and evolving prior, on-going, and future investments - More than an ISRU system modeling tool, MAIT integrates power, excavation, Environmental Control & Life Support System (ECLSS), Cryogenic Fluid Management (CFM) liquification, & compares surface ops & environments, to assist in the closure of other related ISRU shortfalls Adheres to governing NASA procedures for Models & Simulations (NASA-HDBK-7009) & AIAA standards for Mass Properties Control for Space Systems.

Computer-aided-engineering system for modeling and analysis of ECLSS integration testing

The accurate modeling and analysis of two-phase fluid networks found in environmental control and life support systems is presently undertaken by computer-aided engineering (CAE) techniques whose generalized fluid dynamics package can solve arbitrary flow networks. The CAE system for integrated test bed modeling and analysis will also furnish interfaces and subsystem/test-article mathematical models. Three-dimensional diagrams of the test bed are generated by the system after performing the requisite simulation and analysis.

Bearing-Load Modeling and Analysis Study for Mechanically Connected Structures

Bearing-load response for a pin-loaded hole is studied within the context of two-dimensional finite element analyses. Pin-loaded-hole configurations are representative of mechanically connected structures, such as a stiffener fastened to a rib of an isogrid panel, that are idealized as part of a larger structural component. Within this context, the larger structural component may be idealized as a two-dimensional shell finite element model to identify load paths and high stress regions. Finite element modeling and analysis aspects of a pin-loaded hole are considered in the present paper including the use of linear and nonlinear springs to simulate the pin-bearing contact condition. Simulating pin-connected structures within a two-dimensional finite element analysis model using nonlinear spring or gap elements provides an effective way for accurate prediction of the local effective stress state and peak forces.

Modeling and analysis of multiprocessor architectures

Some technologies developed for system level modeling and analysis of algorithms/architectures using an architecture design and development system are reviewed. Modeling and analysis is described with attention given to modeling constraints and analysis using constrained software graphs. An example is presented of an ADAS graph and its associated attributes, such as firing delay, token consume rate, token produce rate, firing threshold, firing condition, arc queue lengths, associated C or Ada functional model, and stochastic behavior.

Modeling and Analysis of Structural Dynamics for a One-Tenth Scale Model NGST Sunshield

New modeling and analysis techniques have been developed for predicting the dynamic behavior of the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST) sunshield. The sunshield consists of multiple layers of pretensioned, thin-film membranes supported by deployable booms. Modeling the structural dynamic behavior of the sunshield is a challenging aspect of the problem due to the effects of membrane wrinkling. A finite element model of the sunshield was developed using an approximate engineering approach, the cable network method, to account for membrane wrinkling effects. Ground testing of a one-tenth scale model of the NGST sunshield were carried out to provide data for validating the analytical model. A series of analyses were performed to predict the behavior of the sunshield under the ground test conditions. Modal analyses were performed to predict the frequencies and mode shapes of the test article and transient response analyses were completed to simulate impulse excitation tests. Comparison was made between analytical predictions and test measurements for the dynamic behavior of the sunshield. In general, the results show good agreement with the analytical model correctly predicting the approximate frequency and mode shapes for the significant structural modes.

ISAC: A tool for aeroservoelastic modeling and analysis

The capabilities of the Interaction of Structures, Aerodynamics, and Controls (ISAC) system of program modules is discussed. The major modeling, analysis, and data management components of ISAC are identified. Equations of motion are displayed for a Laplace-domain representation of the unsteady aerodynamic forces. Options for approximating a frequency-domain representation of unsteady aerodynamic forces with rational functions of the Laplace variable are shown. Linear time invariant state-space equations of motion that result are discussed. Model generation and analyses of stability and dynamic response characteristics are shown for an aeroelastic vehicle which illustrates some of the capabilities of ISAC as a modeling and analysis tool for aeroelastic applications.

Overview of MSFC AMSD Integrated Modeling and Analysis

Structural, thermal, dynamic, and optical models of the NGST AMSD mirror assemblies are being finalized and integrated for predicting cryogenic vacuum test performance of the developing designs. Analyzers in use by the MSFC Modeling and Analysis Team are identified, with overview of approach to integrate simulated effects. Guidelines to verify the individual models and calibration cases for comparison with the vendors' analyses are presented. In addition, baseline and proposed additional scenarios for the cryogenic vacuum testing are briefly described.
