“Water–in–Eutectogel” Electrolytes for Quasi–Solid–State Aqueous Lithium–Ion Batteries

The development of high safety lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is greatly impeded by the flammability and leakage concerns of typical organic solvent-based electrolytes. As one of the alternative classes of electrolytes, hydrogel electrolytes exhibit high safety, high flexibility, low cost, and are benign to the environment. However, the narrow electrochemical stability window (ESW) of typical hydrogel electrolytes restricts the operating voltage of battery cells. Here, a new class of “water-in-eutectogel (WiETG)” electrolyte is reported, fabricated by combining a hydrogel with a “deep eutectic solvent” (LiTFSI in acetamide). The obtained WiETG electrolyte exhibits non-flammability, high ionic conductivity, and a wide ESW. LiMn 2 O 4 ||Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 cells with the WiETG electrolyte exhibit good cycling stability, high flexibility, and high safety. This newly developed WiETG electrolyte not only broadens the ESW of typical hydrogel electrolytes, but also opens a new perspective on future directions and guidance for the design of high safety electrolytes for flexible LIBs and beyond.

Pyromellitic diimide based bipolar molecule for total organic symmetric redox flow battery

Non-aqueous redox flow batteries based on total organic electrolytes, consisting of earth-abundant elements, i.e., C, H, N, O, are regarded as a promising technology for sustainable and large-scale energy storage. In particular, bipolar redox-active organic materials (BROMs) are distinctly fascinating as electroactive species because they have multiple oxidation states and can undergo multiple redox processes. By virtue of this unique characteristic, BROMs can be utilized as both anolyte and catholyte in symmetric flow batteries, consequently, helping alleviate cross-contamination issues. Here, in this paper, we report an all-organic symmetric redox flow battery based on diimide molecule as a bipolar electroactive material. The potential interval between the cathodic peak and the inner and outer anodic peaks led to a promising cell voltage of 2.22 V. The symmetric battery can be operated at a current density of 20 mA cm -2 , with a coulombic efficiency of 90% for over 100 cycles. This work proposes an alternative approach to designing multi-electron organic redox active materials to facilitate the advancement of high-density symmetric flow batteries.

Physics-Based Continuum Modeling for an Aqueous Rechargeable Zn/MnO 2 Battery

This study introduces a framework for modeling the aqueous Zn/MnO 2 rechargeable battery. A reaction system and a physics-based continuum model are proposed based on two reaction types, one involving insertion and the second related to dissolution and deposition of a solid reaction product. The model, fitted to empirical data, predicts voltage behavior and capacity limitations during cycling, identifying electrolytic zinc depletion as a limiting mechanism, depending on the original cell construction. The research suggests the need for further material characterization and reaction analysis, which will advance our understanding and facilitate the development of grid-scale energy storage solutions.

Modulating Solvation Structure in Concentrated Aqueous Organic Redox Flow Battery Electrolyte for Solubility and Transport Enhancement via Polycomplex Ion

Aqueous organic redox flow batteries hold great promise as a technology for creating economical grid energy storage using sustainable materials. Nonetheless, the solubility limit presents a universal barrier for all redox-active organic molecules. In this paper, a new approach is proposed to surpass the solubility limit by manipulating the solvation structure with polycomplex ion additives (PIA). Using poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrenesulfonate colloids as one example, its role in dismantling the rigid supramolecular clusters within the highly concentrated 7,8-dihydroxyphenazine-2-sulfonic acid electrolyte is investigated. 1 H and 23 Na NMR spectra and molecular dynamics simulation studies demonstrate that the bipolar structure of the PIA effectively disrupts the aggregations of DHPS and Na + ion in the highly concentrated anolyte, thus rendering a more flexible solvation structure and less restrictive ion transport, leading to substantially improved battery performance of an AORFB cell. The anolyte with PIA achieved 1.6 M and 74.3 Ah L –1 anolyte energy capacity.

Rational optimization of substituted α–MnO 2 cathode for aqueous zinc–ion battery

Density functional theory (DFT) is utilized to explore the effects of increasing concentrations of vanadium (V) and chromium (Cr) substitution on the discharge of α-MnO 2 cathode in hydrated zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). During H + -intercalation and Zn 2+ -intercalation, Cr-substitution proves to be more effective than V-substitution in promoting discharge behaviors. Transitioning from Mn 0.875 Cr 0.125 O 2 , Mn 0.75 Cr 0.25 O 2 to Mn 0.625 Cr 0.375 O 2 is found to consistently enhance the discharge voltage, along with improved tunnel structure retention and volume expansion suppression. In comparison, the promoting effect of increasing V-substitution is relatively small at initial discharge stages and leads to degradation at later stages, primarily due to an increased concentration of unstable Mn 2+ ion. The superior effect of Cr-substitution is attributed to the unique atomic and electronic structures of substituted Cr 4+ and reduced Cr 3+ ions during discharge. These ions serve as active electron acceptors to limit the formation of Mn 3+ and Mn 2+ ions, and as anchors to stabilize the α-MnO 2 framework and intercalated H + /Zn 2+ ions, respectively. Finally, our study highlights fine-tuning through substitution to enhance the performance of α-MnO 2 -based cathode materials in ZIBs.
