Developing a Vision for Maturing the Heliophysics Infrastructure towards Open Science

In the dawn of open science and the upcoming requirements, we speak about the existing state of Heliophysics infrastructure and detail the evolution required to address capability or interconnection shortcomings. Such a daunting barrier calls for an analysis ecosystem with multi-faceted capability. We propose such an ecosystem, called DIARieS, to be built upon five conceptual pillars: Discovery, Implementation, Analysis, Reproducibility, and Sharing of results. The combination of these concepts in a single platform will enable users to more intuitively combine recent advances in technology to create ‘DIARieS’ of their workflows, which can be easily made open to others in the community. The DIARieS ecosystem will also increase our efficiency by streamlining our various workflow processes, including automatic incorporation of the impending requirements of open science. The various components of the ecosystem will simplify software installation and data implementation, including automatically generated citation lists based on the components included. Automatic containerization and version control of the ecosystem will make the custom workflows easily reproducible. Employing widget technology will ease the difficulty of producing publication and commercial quality visualizations and applying common analyses techniques. Incorporating multiple technologies will streamline the various sharing methods common in our work environments today. Overall, the totality of capabilities to be offered by this analysis ecosystem will drastically simplify the application of open science principles to our work in addition to improving our efficiency and ease of collaboration.

Tool Support for Parametric Analysis of Large Software Simulation Systems

The analysis of large and complex parameterized software systems, e.g., systems simulation in aerospace, is very complicated and time-consuming due to the large parameter space, and the complex, highly coupled nonlinear nature of the different system components. Thus, such systems are generally validated only in regions local to anticipated operating points rather than through characterization of the entire feasible operational envelope of the system. We have addressed the factors deterring such an analysis with a tool to support envelope assessment: we utilize a combination of advanced Monte Carlo generation with n-factor combinatorial parameter variations to limit the number of cases, but still explore important interactions in the parameter space in a systematic fashion. Additional test-cases, automatically generated from models (e.g., UML, Simulink, Stateflow) improve the coverage. The distributed test runs of the software system produce vast amounts of data, making manual analysis impossible. Our tool automatically analyzes the generated data through a combination of unsupervised Bayesian clustering techniques (AutoBayes) and supervised learning of critical parameter ranges using the treatment learner TAR3. The tool has been developed around the Trick simulation environment, which is widely used within NASA. We will present this tool with a GN&C (Guidance, Navigation and Control) simulation of a small satellite system.

System and method for generation of event driven, tuple-space based programs

In a system for automatic generation of event-driven, tuple-space based programs from a sequential specification, a hierarchical mapping solution can target different runtimes relying on event-driven tasks (EDTs). The solution uses loop types to encode short, transitive relations among EDTs that can be evaluated efficiently at runtime. Specifically, permutable loops translate immediately into conservative point-to-point synchronizations of distance one. A runtime-agnostic which can be used to target the transformed code to different runtimes.

Excavator Design Validation

The Excavator Design Validation tool verifies excavator designs by automatically generating control systems and modeling their performance in an accurate simulation of their expected environment. Part of this software design includes interfacing with human operations that can be included in simulation-based studies and validation. This is essential for assessing productivity, versatility, and reliability. This software combines automatic control system generation from CAD (computer-aided design) models, rapid validation of complex mechanism designs, and detailed models of the environment including soil, dust, temperature, remote supervision, and communication latency to create a system of high value. Unique algorithms have been created for controlling and simulating complex robotic mechanisms automatically from just a CAD description. These algorithms are implemented as a commercial cross-platform C++ software toolkit that is configurable using the Extensible Markup Language (XML). The algorithms work with virtually any mobile robotic mechanisms using module descriptions that adhere to the XML standard. In addition, high-fidelity, real-time physics-based simulation algorithms have also been developed that include models of internal forces and the forces produced when a mechanism interacts with the outside world. This capability is combined with an innovative organization for simulation algorithms, new regolith simulation methods, and a unique control and study architecture to make powerful tools with the potential to transform the way NASA verifies and compares excavator designs. Energid's Actin software has been leveraged for this design validation. The architecture includes parametric and Monte Carlo studies tailored for validation of excavator designs and their control by remote human operators. It also includes the ability to interface with third-party software and human-input devices. Two types of simulation models have been adapted: high-fidelity discrete element models and fast analytical models. By using the first to establish parameters for the second, a system has been created that can be executed in real time, or faster than real time, on a desktop PC. This allows Monte Carlo simulations to be performed on a computer platform available to all researchers, and it allows human interaction to be included in a real-time simulation process. Metrics on excavator performance are established that work with the simulation architecture. Both static and dynamic metrics are included.

Image analysis techniques associated with automatic data base generation.

This paper considers some basic problems relating to automatic data base generation from imagery, the primary emphasis being on fast and efficient automatic extraction of relevant pictorial information. Among the techniques discussed are recursive implementations of some particular types of filters which are much faster than FFT implementations, a 'sequential similarity detection' technique of implementing matched filters, and sequential linear classification of multispectral imagery. Several applications of the above techniques are presented including enhancement of underwater, aerial and radiographic imagery, detection and reconstruction of particular types of features in images, automatic picture registration and classification of multiband aerial photographs to generate thematic land use maps.

Periodic, On-Demand, and User-Specified Information Reconciliation

Automated sequence generation (autogen) signifies both a process and software used to automatically generate sequences of commands to operate various spacecraft. Autogen requires fewer workers than are needed for older manual sequence-generation processes and reduces sequence-generation times from weeks to minutes. The autogen software comprises the autogen script plus the Activity Plan Generator (APGEN) program. APGEN can be used for planning missions and command sequences. APGEN includes a graphical user interface that facilitates scheduling of activities on a time line and affords a capability to automatically expand, decompose, and schedule activities.

HOMAR: A computer code for generating homotopic grids using algebraic relations: User's manual

A computer code for fast automatic generation of quasi-three-dimensional grid systems for aerospace configurations is described. The code employs a homotopic method to algebraically generate two-dimensional grids in cross-sectional planes, which are stacked to produce a three-dimensional grid system. Implementation of the algebraic equivalents of the homotopic relations for generating body geometries and grids are explained. Procedures for controlling grid orthogonality and distortion are described. Test cases with description and specification of inputs are presented in detail. The FORTRAN computer program and notes on implementation and use are included.

Automated Testcase Generation for Numerical Support Functions in Embedded Systems

We present a tool for the automatic generation of test stimuli for small numerical support functions, e.g., code for trigonometric functions, quaternions, filters, or table lookup. Our tool is based on KLEE to produce a set of test stimuli for full path coverage. We use a method of iterative deepening over abstractions to deal with floating-point values. During actual testing the stimuli exercise the code against a reference implementation. We illustrate our approach with results of experiments with low-level trigonometric functions, interpolation routines, and mathematical support functions from an open source UAS autopilot.

LLM Benchmarking with LLaMA2: Evaluating Code Development Performance Across Multiple Programming Languages

The rapid evolution of large language models (LLMs) has opened new possibilities for automating various tasks in software development. This paper evaluates the capabilities of the LLaMA 2-70B model in automating these tasks for scientific applications written in commonly used programming languages. Using representative test problems, we assess the model's capacity to generate code, documentation, and unit tests, as well as its ability to translate existing code between commonly used programming languages. Our comprehensive analysis evaluates the compilation, runtime behavior, and correctness of the generated and translated code. Additionally, we assess the quality of automatically generated code, documentation, and unit tests. Here, our results indicate that while LLaMA 2-70B frequently generates syntactically correct and functional code for simpler numerical tasks, it encounters substantial difficulties with more complex, parallelized, or distributed computations, requiring considerable manual corrections. We identify key limitations and suggest areas for future improvements to better leverage AI-driven automation in scientific computing workflows.

Effect of accuracy of wind power prediction on power system operator

This research project proposed a modified unit commitment that schedules connection and disconnection of generating units in response to load. A modified generation control is also proposed that controls steam units under automatic generation control, fast responding diesels, gas turbines and hydro units under a feedforward control, and wind turbine array output under a closed loop array control. This modified generation control and unit commitment require prediction of trend wind power variation one hour ahead and the prediction of error in this trend wind power prediction one half hour ahead. An improved meter for predicting trend wind speed variation is developed. Methods for accurately simulating the wind array power from a limited number of wind speed prediction records was developed. Finally, two methods for predicting the error in the trend wind power prediction were developed. This research provides a foundation for testing and evaluating the modified unit commitment and generation control that was developed to maintain operating reliability at a greatly reduced overall production cost for utilities with wind generation capacity.

An Automated Marching Scheme for Overset Structured Surface Mesh Generation

Starting with a Boundary Representation (BRep) of the geometry of an aerospace vehicle, an automated marching scheme is presented for generation of structured overset surface meshes. First, a pre-processing step automatically generates discrete representations of the BRep faces and BRep edges by tessellating in parameter space. Topological connectivity between the discretized BRep edges is then established, followed by automatic grid point distribution on these edges based on local turning angle, proximity to sharp geometric features, and prescribed maximum stretching ratio and grid spacing. A set of initial curves for algebraic or hyperbolic marching on a surface is then derived from the redistributed edge curves. A spatially-variable marching distance together with a grid point distribution in the marching direction are automatically determined for each initial curve. A set of overset surface meshes that covers the entire geometry is then obtained by combining the surface meshes around the BRep edges, and the structured meshes derived from the discretized BRep faces

A technique for optimizing grid blocks

A new technique for automatically combining grid blocks of a given block-structured grid into logically-rectangular clusters which are 'optimal' is presented. This technique uses the simulated annealing optimization method to reorganize the blocks into an optimum configuration, that is, one which minimizes a user-defined objective function such as the number of clusters or the differential in the sizes of all the clusters. The clusters which result from applying the technique to two different two-dimensional configurations are presented for a variety of objective function definitions. In all cases, the automatically-generated clusters are significantly better than the original clusters. While this new technique can be applied to block-structured grids generated from any source, it is particularly useful for operating on block-structured grids containing many blocks, such as those produced by the emerging automatic block-structured grid generators.

A database of thermally activated delayed fluorescent molecules auto-generated from scientific literature with ChemDataExtractor

A database of thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) molecules was automatically generated from the scientific literature. It consists of 25,482 data records with an overall precision of 82%. Among these, 5,349 records have chemical names in the form of SMILES strings which are represented with 91% accuracy; these are grouped in a subsidiary database. Each data record contains one of the following four properties: maximum emission wavelength (λ EM ), photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), singlet-triplet energy splitting (ΔE ST ), and delayed lifetime (τ D ). The databases were created through text mining using ChemDataExtractor, a chemistry-aware natural-language-processing toolkit, which has been adapted for TADF research. The text-mined corpus consisted of 2,733 papers from the Royal Society of Chemistry and Elsevier. To the best of our knowledge, these databases are the first databases that have been auto-generated for TADF molecules from existing publications. The databases have been publicly released for experimental and computational applications in the TADF research field.
