Integrated Power Source Grant

Traditional spacecraft power systems incorporate a solar array energy source, an energy storage element (battery), and battery charge control and bus voltage regulation electronics to provide continuous electrical power for spacecraft systems and instruments. Dedicated power conditioning components provide limited fault isolation between systems and instruments, while a centralized power-switching unit provides spacecraft load control. Battery undervoltage conditions are detected by the spacecraft processor, which removes fault conditions and non-critical loads before permanent battery damage can occur. Cost effective operation of a micro-sat constellation requires a fault tolerant spacecraft architecture that minimizes on-orbit operational costs by permitting autonomous reconfiguration in response to unexpected fault conditions. A new micro-sat power system architecture that enhances spacecraft fault tolerance and improves power system survivability by continuously managing the battery charge and discharge processes on a cell-by-cell basis has been developed. This architecture is based on the Integrated Power Source (US patent 5644207), which integrates dual junction solar cells, Lithium Ion battery cells, and processor based charge control electronics into a structural panel that can be deployed or used to form a portion of the outer shell of a micro-spacecraft. The first generation Integrated Power Source is configured as a one inch thick panel in which prismatic Lithium Ion battery cells are arranged in a 3x7 matrix (26VDC) and a 3x1 matrix (3.7VDC) to provide the required output voltages and load currents. A multi-layer structure holds the battery cells, as well as the thermal insulators that are necessary to protect the Lithium Ion battery cells from the extreme temperatures of the solar cell layer. Independent thermal radiators, located on the back of the panel, are dedicated to the solar cell array, the electronics, and the battery cell array. In deployed panel applications, these radiators maintain the battery cells in an appropriate operational temperature range.

Time-dependent Calculations of an Impact-triggered Runaway Greenhouse Atmosphere on Mars

Large asteroid and comet impacts result in the production of thick (greater than tens of meters) global debris layers of 1500+ K and the release through precipitation of impact-injected steam and melting ground ice) of large amounts (greater than tens of meters global equivalent thickness) of water on the surface of Mars. Modeling shows that the surface of Mars is still above the freezing point of water after the rainout of the impact-injected steam and melting of subsurface ice. The energy remaining in the hot debris layer will allow evaporation of this water back into the atmosphere where it may rain out at a later time. Given a sufficiently rapid supply of this water to the atmosphere it will initiate a temporary "runaway" greenhouse state.

Atomic-Oxygen-Durable Microsheet Glass Reflector

Advanced solar dynamic concentrator concepts being considered by the NASA Lewis Research Center for space power systems include one utilizing microsheet glass coated with silver. For this material, a 5000-angstrom layer of silver is deposited on the back side of a contoured piece of microsheet glass, 0.2-mm thick. The silvered side is then bonded to a contoured aluminum, magnesium, or graphite epoxy face sheet with a space-qualified, pressure-sensitive thin-film adhesive. Experience gained from the development of this technology suggests that this material may reduce the cost and improve the performance of solar dynamic concentrators. This microsheet glass technology provides an effective barrier to atomic oxygen attack and provides the opportunity to utilize silver-reflective coatings in low-Earth-orbit solar dynamic applications.

Elastomeric load sharing device

An elastomeric load sharing device, interposed in combination between a driven gear and a central drive shaft to facilitate balanced torque distribution in split power transmission systems, includes a cylindrical elastomeric bearing and a plurality of elastomeric bearing pads. The elastomeric bearing and bearing pads comprise one or more layers, each layer including an elastomer having a metal backing strip secured thereto. The elastomeric bearing is configured to have a high radial stiffness and a low torsional stiffness and is operative to radially center the driven gear and to minimize torque transfer through the elastomeric bearing. The bearing pads are configured to have a low radial and torsional stiffness and a high axial stiffness and are operative to compressively transmit torque from the driven gear to the drive shaft. The elastomeric load sharing device has spring rates that compensate for mechanical deviations in the gear train assembly to provide balanced torque distribution between complementary load paths of split power transmission systems.

Automatic target recognition using a feature-based optical neural network

An optical neural network based upon the Neocognitron paradigm (K. Fukushima et al. 1983) is introduced. A novel aspect of the architectural design is shift-invariant multichannel Fourier optical correlation within each processing layer. Multilayer processing is achieved by iteratively feeding back the output of the feature correlator to the input spatial light modulator and updating the Fourier filters. By training the neural net with characteristic features extracted from the target images, successful pattern recognition with intra-class fault tolerance and inter-class discrimination is achieved. A detailed system description is provided. Experimental demonstration of a two-layer neural network for space objects discrimination is also presented.

Low-dimensional carbon materials decorated FAPbI 3 for carbon-based perovskite solar cells

Carbon nanomaterials are at the forefront of research in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to their exceptional electrical, optical, and stability properties. Their diverse applications include serving as interfacial layers, additives, hole and electron transport materials, and back electrodes. While the influence of various low-dimensional carbon nanomaterial structures on crystallinity, optical and electrical performance, and overall device efficiency has been a topic of interest, it has not been thoroughly explored until now. In this study, we effectively integrated carbon quantum dots (CQDs), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and graphene into the FAPbI 3 photoactive layer using a two-step sequential deposition method. Our experiments revealed marked improvements in the photovoltaic performance of PSCs that incorporated all three types of carbon nanomaterials. In particular, the data shows significant enhancements in power conversion efficiency, demonstrating the effectiveness of these materials in optimizing device functionality. Notably, MWCNTs distinguished themselves by exhibiting a remarkable potential for enhancing long-term stability. This finding underscores the importance of selecting the right carbon nanomaterials for future PSC developments, paving the way for more reliable and efficient solar energy solutions. As a result, our research highlights the critical role of carbon nanomaterials in advancing perovskite solar technology.

Back wall solar cell

A solar cell is disclosed which comprises a first semiconductor material of one conductivity type with one face having the same conductivity type but more heavily doped to form a field region arranged to receive the radiant energy to be converted to electrical energy, and a layer of a second semiconductor material, preferably highly doped, of opposite conductivity type on the first semiconductor material adjacent the first semiconductor material at an interface remote from the heavily doped field region. Instead of the opposite conductivity layer, a metallic Schottky diode layer may be used, in which case no additional back contact is needed. A contact such as a gridded contact, previous to the radiant energy may be applied to the heavily doped field region of the more heavily doped, same conductivity material for its contact.

Photocapacitive image converter

An apparatus for converting a radiant energy image into corresponding electrical signals including an image converter is described. The image converter includes a substrate of semiconductor material, an insulating layer on the front surface of the substrate, and an electrical contact on the back surface of the substrate. A first series of parallel transparent conductive stripes is on the insulating layer with a processing circuit connected to each of the conductive stripes for detecting the modulated voltages generated thereon. In a first embodiment of the invention, a modulated light stripe perpendicular to the conductive stripes scans the image converter. In a second embodiment a second insulating layer is deposited over the conductive stripes and a second series of parallel transparent conductive stripes perpendicular to the first series is on the second insulating layer. A different frequency current signal is applied to each of the second series of conductive stripes and a modulated image is applied to the image converter.

Effect of Scattering on the Heat Transfer Behavior of a Typical Semitransparent TBC Material on a Substrate

A parametric study was performed to examine the effects of isotropic scattering on the heat transfer in typical semitransparent thermal barrier coating on an opaque substrate. Some ceramic materials are semitransparent in the wavelength range where thermal radiation is important. Therefore, absorption, emission, and scattering of thermal radiation by the semitransparent layer and the emissivity of the substrate will affect the heat transfer and temperature in the layer. Scattering which depends on the structure of the semitransparent material can be used to increase the reflectivity of the layer and therefore decrease the heat transfer through the layer. A one dimensional model of a 1 mm thick semitransparent layer on a substrate was used in this study. The front of the semitransparent layer is heated by convection and radiation and the back of the substrate is cooled by radiation and convection. The coating is assumed to be semitransparent up to a cutoff wavelength and opaque at higher wavelengths. The absorption and scattering coefficient are constant over the wavelength range where the material is semitransparent. The absorption coefficient, scattering coefficients, width of the semitransparent band, and the bond coat emissivity are varied. Temperature profiles and heat flux through layers as a function of absorption and scattering coefficients are presented.

A Search of Large Amplitude Waves in Slow Shock in the Distant Tail and an Examination of Wave Turbulence in the Plasma Sheet Boundary Layer

Two fluid simulations predict that switch-off slow shocks should have large amplitude left-hand wave trains downstream of the shock. Recent simulations show that this feature depends on specific plasma parameters, such as Much number and ratio of electron-to-ion temperature. In this study we carefully examine all distant tail crossings using ISEE-3 field and plasma data. We seek large amplitude rotational waves and compare to shock parameters. We also investigate right-hand waves associated with ion beams in the plasma sheet boundary layer. We examine the role of those back-streaming ions from slow shocks in wave generation. Wave mode cascade and parametric decay in these regions also will be studied.

Composite Bond Line Measurements Based on A Bayesian Analysis of Flash Thermography Data

For bonded composite materials, an accurate characterization of the adhesive bond line is needed to predict failure modes and fracture toughness. In this paper, bond line thickness was estimated from data obtained using through transmission flash thermography. The forward model that predicts back surface temperature is based on a three layer heat diffusion equation with varying diffusivity and flux boundary conditions. The corresponding inverse problem of estimating bond line thickness from measurement data was solved using a Bayesian approach that assumed Gaussian priors for the bond line thickness and thermal diffusivity of the adherends. Finally, the outputs of the thermography based method were compared to measurements that were collected using a micrometer and ultrasound testing.
