Substantial carbon loss respired from a corn–soybean agroecosystem highlights the importance of careful management as we adapt to changing climate

Understanding agroecosystem carbon (C) cycle response to climate change and management is vital for maintaining their long-term C storage. We demonstrate this importance through an in-depth examination of a ten-year eddy covariance dataset from a corn–corn–soybean crop rotation grown in the Midwest United States. Ten-year average annual net ecosystem exchange (NEE) showed a net C sink of –0.39 Mg C ha –1 yr –1 . However, NEE in 2014 and 2015 from the corn ecosystem was 3.58 and 2.56 Mg C ha –1 yr –1 , respectively. Most C loss occurred during the growing season, when photosynthesis should dominate and C fluxes should reflect a net ecosystem gain. Partitioning NEE into gross primary productivity (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (ER) showed this C 'burp' was driven by higher ER, with a 51% (2014) and 57% (2015) increase from the ten-year average (15.84 Mg C ha –1 yr –1 ). GPP was also higher than average (16.24 Mg C ha –1 yr –1 ) by 25% (2014) and 37% (2015), but this was not enough to offset the C emitted from ER. This increased ER was likely driven by enhanced soil microbial respiration associated with ideal growing season climate, substrate availability, nutrient additions, and a potential legacy effect from drought.

Nurses’ Satisfaction with Patient Room Lighting Conditions: A Study of Nurses in Four Hospitals with Differences in the Environment of Care

Lighting systems in patient rooms must balance energy efficiency concerns with the holistic needs of patients, families, and medical caregivers. This paper reports survey responses from 138 individuals working in medical-surgical units in four hospitals, with three of the hospitals having traditional lighting systems and the other hospital having a more contemporary lighting system. The results add to a growing evidence base on the effects of lighting on nurses’ job performance, job satisfaction, and overall perceptions of the environment, and provide evidence that innovative lighting approaches and technologies are worth considering as an investment by hospital administrators looking to improve employees’ and patients’ perceptions of the patient room environment. This knowledge is intended to help facility designers and managers incorporate nurses’ perspectives in their decisions, as well as to inform technologists and engineers developing future generations of lighting systems for patient rooms. These future systems will utilize solid-state lighting technologies, such as LEDs, and will provide new opportunities for adapting the intensity, distribution, and spectrum of light to better satisfy the holistic needs of patients and caregivers at different times of day or night.

When should we care about new technology in the nuclear domain? Assessing emerging technologies impacts on stability

As new and modernized systems are fielded by the U.S. and Russia, and as China expands its nuclear stockpile with 21st century technology, it is important to ask when do new technologies in the nuclear domain actually matter? When do emerging capabilities and replacements of existing systems change the military realities of the world’s nuclear powers and the lived experiences of the people in these countries? Specifically, it is important to consider what are the attributes of emerging weapon systems that may impact nuclear strategic stability, or in even narrower terms, which attributes of newly fielded military systems may make nuclear conflict more likely or less likely? It is through this understanding that policy makers, voters, and the broader nuclear weapons community can evaluate when and how to respond to emerging technology while reducing the likelihood of nuclear escalation.

Sharing is Caring: A Practical Guide to FAIR(ER) Open Data Release

This is a two hour version of the FAIR(ER) tutorial we released at Barcelona 9/24. SAND2024-12152C. The only modifications were largely deletions, which don't require additional review. The one key difference that actually has changed material is in the Language section for Equitable Accessibility, which is almost word for word the same as previously approved SAND2025-04087W which is the website version of the presentation.
