A Reference Implementation for a Quantum Message Passing Interface

Practical applications of quantum computing are currently limited by the number of qubits that can be set with reasonable fidelities for each system. Therefore, a distributed quantum computing system with multiple quantum computers coherently connected is highly demanding. To realize the internode communication of quantum information, the software interface, Quantum Message Passing Interface (QMPI), leveraging the framework built for classical MPI but taking advantage of quantum teleportation to communicate between different quantum nodes was proposed. In this project, we develop the QMPI with point-to-point and collective operations in Qiskit and characterize its performance by demonstrating the application implementations. Moreover, we developed a new technique for optimizing collective communication of the distributed quantum programs with Multi-Controlled Toffoli gates. This technique beats the state-of-the-art in terms of fidelity and the number of remote EPR pairs consumed in both simulations and experiments.

Cyber Framework for Steering and Measurements Collection Over Instrument-Computing Ecosystems

We propose a framework to develop cyber solutions to support the remote steering of science instruments and measurements collection over instrument-computing ecosystems. It is based on provisioning separate data and control connections at the network level, and developing software modules consisting of Python wrappers for instrument commands and Pyro server-client codes that make them available across the ecosystem network. We demonstrate automated measurement transfers and remote steering operations in a microscopy use case for materials research over an ecosystem of Nion microscopes and computing platforms connected over site networks. The proposed framework is currently under further refinement and being adopted to science workflows with automated remote experiments steering for autonomous chemistry laboratories and smart energy grid simulations.

Generating synthetic signaling networks for in silico modeling studies

Predictive models of signaling pathways have proven to be difficult to develop. Reasons include the uncertainty in the number of species, the complexity in species’ interactions, and the sparseness and uncertainty in experimental data. Traditional approaches to developing mechanistic models rely on collecting experimental data and fitting a single model to that data. This approach works for simple systems but has proven unreliable for complex systems such as biological signaling networks. For example, uncertainty and sparseness of the data often result in overfitted models that have little predictive value beyond recapitulating the experimental data itself. Thus, there is a need to develop new approaches to create predictive mechanistic models of complex systems. However, to determine the effectiveness of any new algorithm, a baseline model is needed to test its performance. To meet this need, we developed a method for generating artificial synthetic networks that are reasonably realistic and thus can be treated as ground truth models. These synthetic models can then be used to generate synthetic data for developing and testing algorithms designed to recover the underlying network topology and associated parameters. Here, we describe a simple approach for generating synthetic signaling networks that can be used for this purpose.

Development of Predictive Models for Advanced Reactor Autonomous Control

Advanced reactor designs including microreactors and small modular reactors will contribute to the clean production of cheap energy, and autonomous control for advanced reactors is an appealing option for reducing cost. However, there is a lack of industry experience applying autonomous control for advanced nuclear reactors. To accelerate the development and industry acceptance of autonomous control software for nuclear reactors, we aim to demonstrate autonomous control of the Purdue University research reactor (PUR-1) using INL-developed model predictive control (MPC) methods. To prepare for this demonstration, data-driven predictive models based on process data collected from PUR-1 have been developed and integrated with MPC and used to control a physics-based model of PUR-1. A data-driven dynamics model and a gated recurrent unit (GRU) network were both trained on process data from PUR-1. The dynamics model was shown to effectively control the reactor model with MPC when provided reactivity as a control variable but failed to control the model through the control rod positions. The GRU network produced more accurate predictions than the dynamics model when evaluated on operational data, and future work will include the evaluation of the GRU network in the controller.

Principles of two-dimensional terahertz spectroscopy of collective excitations: The case of Josephson plasmons in layered superconductors

Two-dimensional terahertz spectroscopy (2DTS), a terahertz analog of nuclear magnetic resonance, is a new technique poised to address many open questions in complex condensed matter systems. The conventional theoretical framework used ubiquitously for interpreting multidimensional spectra of discrete quantum level systems is, however, insufficient for the continua of collective excitations in strongly correlated materials. Here, in this work, we develop a theory for 2DTS of a model collective excitation, the Josephson plasma resonance in layered superconductors. Starting from a mean-field approach at temperatures well below the superconducting phase transition, we obtain expressions for the multidimensional nonlinear responses that are amenable to intuition derived from the conventional single-mode scenario. We then consider temperatures near the superconducting critical temperature T c , where dynamics beyond mean-field become important and conventional intuition fails. As fluctuations proliferate near T c , the dominant contribution to nonlinear response comes from an optical parametric drive of counterpropagating Josephson plasmons, which gives rise to 2D spectra that are qualitatively different from the mean-field predictions. As such, and in contrast to one-dimensional spectroscopy techniques, such as third harmonic generation, 2DTS can be used to directly probe thermally excited finite-momentum plasmons and their interactions. Our theory can readily be tested in cuprates, and we discuss implications beyond the present context of Josephson plasmons.

Initial High Temperature Inelastic Constitutive Model for Alloy 617

This report describes progress on a Alloy 617 inelastic constitutive model slated for inclusion in the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code in Code Case N-898 “Use of Alloy 617 (UNS N06617) for Class A Elevated Temperature Construction, Section III, Division 5” as part of an appendix on inelastic modeling. This appendix will provide a reference material model for A617 for use in conjunction with the ASME design by inelastic analysis criteria. This report focuses on the implementation and evaluation of an existing Alloy 617 model developed to represent the data collected at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) as part of the Alloy 617 Code Case experimental campaign. While the model accurately captures the cyclic stress/strain behavior of Alloy 617, it fails to capture the long-term creep and lower temperature tensile data. In addition, the model form is complicated and has over 50 configurable parameters. As such, we recommend the development of a simplified model, incorporating key features of the ORNL model but reducing the model complexity.

Machine Learning Based Software Package for Reproducible Data Analysis for Electron Microscopy

Advances in hardware and computation technologies are enabling large hyperspectral imaging during Electron Microscopy (EM), resulting in datasets being produced at rapidly increasing spatial and temporal resolutions. This presents exciting opportunities for microstructure analysis, but also poses great challenges in data analysis. Under this STTR program, QuesTek Innovations LLC, a leader in the field of integrated computational materials engineering (ICME), collaborated with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory. The team developed an open-source machine learning (ML) powered tool for EM data analysis of multiple systems and data types, and collected EM data for ML model development using the cutting-edge PicoProbe equipment at Argonne National Laboratory.

Multiphysics Design Optimization and Additive Manufacturing of Nuclear Components (Final CRADA Report - Executive Summary)

Westinghouse Electric Company (WEC) actively participated in the advancement of the nuclear fuel and reactor design space and requested the help of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in the creation of a new design tool set. This report details the creation of a collection of software tool sets that are linked together to collectively assist WEC design engineers in developing novel ideas outside the normal scope of traditional nuclear fuel and reactor design formulas. Specifically, Siemens HEEDS, a design space exploration and parametric optimization software, monitored and changed parameters in a collection of softwares to meet the team’s objective. The HEEDS parametric optimization method, SHERPA, was developed to control the Siemens NX CAD platform to adjust the native CAD of a hexahedral spacer grid. This new geometry can be used to execute a topological design optimization by the NX Topology software add-in. The resulting geometry is additively manufacturable. This topological optimization occurred twice—once on the spacer grid’s spring, and once on the dimple geometry. These new geometries were imported by Siemens’ STAR-CCM+, a multiphysics structural and fluid dynamic computational solver in which the spring geometry is deflected to match the rod insertion configuration. Along with the dimple geometry, this new deflected spring was used to complete a hydraulic assessment of a single-unit cell comprising one rod, one spring, and two dimples. The HEEDS SHERPA algorithm ranks the design based on the final mass of the unit cell and the hydraulic pressure drop performance. The ORNL team demonstrated the ability to use this software and provided engineering judgement to apply modern aerospace aerodynamic design. The effort has been focused on thinking outside the conventional design space and redesigning a spacer grid to perform beyond the WEC set objectives. Furthermore, the ORNL team also demonstrated that the HEEDS optimization routine can independently develop a design that meets the WEC design goals. Although these designs were at a low technology readiness level, their demonstration confirmed the team’s capability to create novel advanced nuclear concepts.
