Concerning the primordial abundance of helium in quasi-stellar sources.

Primordial temperature fluctuations, which appear to be necessary in order to explain aspects of galaxy formation, can lead to observable effects in some objects. In QSS and other compact systems a correlation of absolute luminosity with primordial helium content is predicted.

Apogee motor rocketry reliability improvements

Since 1963, solid-propellant apogee motors have been placing satellites into geosynchronous orbits. Major technological breakthroughs are not required to satisfy future mission requirements; however, there is a need to improve reliability to enhance cost effectiveness. A summary of results and conclusions derived from a review of missions, where failure of a solid motor was inferred, and from a correlation of system factors with failures are reported. Highlights of a solid motor diagnostic instrumentation study are presented. Finally, recommendations are provided for areas of future apogee motor upgrade, which will increase project cost effectiveness by reducing the potential for future flight failures.

Catalogue of diffuse interstellar band measurements

Diffuse-band data have been collected from the literature and reduced statistically to a common measurement system, enabling correlation analyses to be made with a larger quantity of data than previously possible. A full listing of the catalogued data is presented, along with some discussion of the correlations. One important application of such studies is the identification of cases of peculiar diffuse-band behavior, and a table is given showing all cases of band strengths deviating by more than twice the mean dispersion from the best-fit correlations. This table may be useful in planning further observations.

An advanced combustor analytical design procedure and its application in the design and development testing of a premix/prevaporized combustion system

Due to the protracted time and relatively high monetary expenditures associated with empirical design procedures, AiResearch has placed considerable emphasis on the development and use of combustor analytical models to augment the existing design techniques. A brief account of the semi-empirical design procedure is given, followed by the description of six analytical computer models. An advanced combustor design logic based upon these models is presented. A brief description of a premix/prevaporized combustion system and correlation with the models is given.

Correlation of spacecraft passive microwave system data with soil moisture indices (API)

Electrical scanning microwave radiometer brightness temperature, meteorological data, climatological data, and winter wheat crop information were used to estimate that soil moisture content in the Great Plains region. Results over the predominant winter wheat areas indicate that the best potential to infer soil moisture occurs during fall and spring. These periods encompass the growth stages when soil moisture is most important to winter wheat yield. Other significant results are reported.

Energy normalization of TV viewed optical correlation (automated correlation plane analyzer for an optical processor)

An automatic correlation plane processor that can rapidly acquire, identify, and locate the autocorrelation outputs of a bank of multiple optical matched filters is described. The read-only memory (ROM) stored digital silhouette of each image associated with each matched filter allows TV video to be used to collect image energy to provide accurate normalization of autocorrelations. The resulting normalized autocorrelations are independent of the illumination of the matched input. Deviation from unity of a normalized correlation can be used as a confidence measure of correct image identification. Analog preprocessing circuits permit digital conversion and random access memory (RAM) storage of those video signals with the correct amplitude, pulse width, rising slope, and falling slope. TV synchronized addressing of 3 RAMs permits on-line storage of: (1) the maximum unnormalized amplitude, (2) the image x location, and (3) the image y location of the output of each of up to 99 matched filters. A fourth RAM stores all normalized correlations. A normalization approach, normalization for cross correlations, a system's description with block diagrams, and system's applications are discussed.

Processing MAGSAT data for comparison with geoid anomalies

A digital data library of MAGSAT data consisting of 1,615,636 measurements from the quiet data set, is geographically sorted, and allows rapid analysis and processing of all the quiet magnetic data about any selected location. Because this library of MAGSAT data is compatible with existing gravity and geoid data library processing and display system software, correlations between MAGSAT, surface gravity, GEOS-3 radar altimeter geoid and bathymetric data sets can be conveniently detected and analyzed. Polynomial trends from each half-orbit were removed as an effective way of estimating and removing ring current effects following estimation of the core field contribution. It was found that a third order polynomial is the lowest polynomial order that appears to provide the best consistency of residual anomalies between coincident orbits.

CASSCF/CI calculations for first row transition metal hydrides - The TiH(4-phi), VH(5-delta), CrH(6-sigma-plus), MnH(7-sigma-plus), FeH(4,6-delta) and NiH(2-delta) states

Calculations are performed for the predicted ground states of TiH(4-phi), VH(5-delta), CrH(6-sigma-plus), MnH(7-sigma-plus), Fett(4,6-delta) and NiH(2-delta). For FeH both the 6-delta and 4-delta states are studied, since both are likely candidates for the ground state. The ground state symmetries are predicted based on a combination of atomic coupling arguments and coupling of 4s(2)3d(n) and 4s(1)3d(n+1) terms in the molecular system. Electron correlation is included by a CASSCF/CI (SD) treatment. The CASSCF includes near-degeneracy effects, while correlation of the 3d electrons in included at the CI level.

Characterization of the relationship of the cure cycle chemistry to cure cycle processing properties

Dynamic Dielectric measurements made over a wide range of frequency provide a sensitive and convenient means for monitoring the cure process in thermosets and thermoplastics. The measurement of dielectric relaxation is one of only a few instrumental techniques available for studying molecular properties in both the liquid and solid states. Furthermore, it is probably the only convenient experimental technique for studying the polymerization process of going from a monomeric liquid of varying viscosity to a crosslinked, insoluble, high temperature solid. The objective of the research is to develop on-line dielectric instrumentation for quantitative nondestructive material evaluation and closed loop smart cure cycle control. The key is to relate the chemistry of the cure cycle process to the dielectric properties of the polymer system by correlating the time, temperature, and frequency dependent dielectric measurements with chemical characterization measurements. Measurement of the wide variation in magnitude of the complex permittivity with both frequency and state of cure, coupled with chemical characterization work, have been shown in the laboratory to have the potential to determine: resin quality, composition and age; cure cycle window boundaries; onset of flow and point of maximum flow; extent of and completion of reaction; evolution of volatiles; T sub g; and, crosslinking and molecular weight buildup.

Channel formation in Pb-Sn, Pb-Sb, and Pb-Sn-Sb alloy ingots and comparison with the system NH4Cl-H2O

The formation of segregation channels during the unidirectional solidification of base chilled ingots has been studied as a function of composition in binary Pb-Sn and Pb-Sb and ternary Pb-Sn-Sb alloys. The patterns of channel distribution were characterized in the binary and ternary systems and are described as functions of temperature gradients, growth rates, dendrite spacings, and interdendritic permeabilities. Channels appear to nucleate at random across a dendritic front and subsequently to interact as they propagate, decreasing in density across the front. Assuming that the interdendritic spacing is the characteristic distance for a liquid perturbation, yields critical effective Rayleigh numbers which lie within a factor of x 40 for both metallic and aqueous systems. This correlation is close, considering the sensitivity to any assumed dimension and the range of material properties involved, and is taken to support a model for channel nucleation occurring close to the dendritic growth front.

Elevated temperature fracture of RS/PM aluminum alloy 8009

The fracture behavior of advanced powder metallurgy Al-Fe-V-Si alloy 8009 (previously called FVS0812) is being characterized under monotonic loads, as a function of temperature. Particular attention is focused on contributions to the fracture mechanism from the fine grained dispersoid strengthened microstructure, dissolved solute from rapid solidification, and the moist air environment. Time-dependent crack growth is characterized in advanced aluminum alloys at elevated temperatures with the fracture mechanics approach, and cracking mechanisms are examined with a metallurgical approach. Specific tasks were to obtain standard load crack growth experimental information from a refined testing system; to correlate crack growth kinetics with the j-integral and time dependent C(sub t)(t); and to investigate the intermediate temperature embrittlement of 8009 alloy in order to understand crack growth mechanisms.

Optimal matrix approximants in structural identification

Problems of model correlation and system identification are central in the design, analysis, and control of large space structures. Of the numerous methods that have been proposed, many are based on finding minimal adjustments to a model matrix sufficient to introduce some desirable quality into that matrix. In this work, several of these methods are reviewed, placed in a modern framework, and linked to other previously known ideas in computational linear algebra and optimization. This new framework provides a point of departure for a number of new methods which are introduced here. Significant among these is a method for stiffness matrix adjustment which preserves the sparsity pattern of an original matrix, requires comparatively modest computational resources, and allows robust handling of noisy modal data. Numerical examples are included to illustrate the methods presented herein.
