Transitioning the NASA SLR Network to Event Timing Mode for Reduced Systematics, Improved Stability and Data Precision

NASA's legacy Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) network produces about one-third of the global SLR data to support spacegeodesy. This network of globally distributed stations has been using Time Interval Units (TIU) for range measurements for thelast 25 + years. To improve the reliability of the SLR network and satisfy the need for stable millimeter precision data, a phasedreplacement of the TIUs in the network with picosecond-precise Event Timer Modules was initiated in 2015. This schemeallowed the time of flight and laser transmit epoch measurement to one picosecond resolution. For a network with globalscientific impact, transitioning to a new data generation metrological scheme requires significant data scrutiny and long-termscience data validation. Any long-term testing/measurement has the potential to interrupt the station's daily operational dataflow to the International Laser Ranging Service (ILRS) as the station under test will have to put its test data into quarantine. We have demonstrated a very effective way to test and implement the new device without removing the old hardware andwithout the need for the orbit analysis. This operationally noninvasive scheme performed concurrent test measurements enablinguninterrupted operational data flow to the users, while allowing simultaneous test data capture for short- and long-termsystematics and stability analysis. Extensive analysis of the test data was performed by the NASA SLR engineering team andthe ILRS Analysis Standing Committee, to uncover biases and any dependencies on the satellite ranges (for nonlinear scaleissues). Multi-ETM comparison was also performed at two of the SLR stations through the interchange of hardware to establishthe inter-device range biases and stability. Such benchmarked hardware was subsequently sent to the remaining stationsto allow traceability and normalize the network performance. The range bias intercomparison performed using the multiyearSLR data analysis agreed well with the engineering changes, thus validating the approach to flush out station-specific rangingsystematics affecting precise orbit determination. Such an improvement and rebalancing of the current network will allowan orderly transition of the current NASA SLR network operating at a maximum rate of 10 Hz to the NASA next generationSpace Geodesy Satellite Laser Ranging (SGSLR) network operating at 2 kHz (McGarry et al. in J Geod, 2018. https ://doi.org/10.1007/s0019 0-018-1191-6; Merkowitz et al. in J Geod, 2018. https ://doi.org/10.1007/s0019 0-018-1204-5).

A National Infrastructure for Artificial Intelligence on the Grid (NI4AI) (Final Scientific/Technical Report)

Electric utilities have traditionally taken a very pragmatic yet myopic approach with grid sensors and the resulting collected data. Sensors are purchased and deployed to solve a specific, known problem that has risen to sufficient awareness as to justify the effort of deploying sensors and the needed capital investment. This sensor data flows into proprietary software packages with limited functionality intended only to address the initial problem. This approach aligns with the financial incentives of the utility to deploy capital into fixed hardware assets for which the corporations earn a rate of return. This mentality stands in stark contrast to the big data revolution that started nearly 25 years ago with the rise of Google. In this worldview, data is a fundamental business asset; successful organizations collect, store, explore, merge, and exploit as much data as possible to not only solve problems well understood today but also to tackle new problems that will inevitably rise tomorrow. The ARPA-E Open Innovation 2018 project entitled A National Infrastructure for Artificial Intelligence on the Grid or NI4AI for short was designed to demonstrate this alternative paradigm for using data. To do this, the project was composed of three key thrust areas. The first major component deployed a variety of high-frequency grid sensors and captured terabytes of both wide-scale and localized grid measurements, generating high-value datasets for grid research and algorithm development. The second aspect made available PingThings’ PredictiveGridTM, a horizontally scalable, cloud-based data management and AI platform built for time series data to explore and exploit the collected data. Finally, the project fostered a diverse and open research community composed of experts from numerous fields through focused educational content, code sharing, and data science competitions. Shifting away from “single use” sensors and closed data silos within electric utilities is a major benefit to the public at large. This legacy approach to data is incredibly (1) capital intensive (new sensors must be deployed for each new problem and problems tend to arise continuously) and (2) painfully slow (new problems must be identified first and then new sensors must be deployed to collect data to begin to address the issue). The transition to a carbon neutral grid requires a massive transformation of the existing grid infrastructure and will continue to challenge the legacy grid in unforeseen ways. The only way to make the energy transition cost effective is for utilities to abandon this dated data paradigm and adopt more contemporary approaches. NI4AI has shown that it is technically possible and economically feasible to ingest, explore, and exploit grid data collected from even very high frequency sensing, such as continuous point on wave sensors collecting measurements 10,000 times a second. In fact, the PredictiveGrid platform used is commercially available and deployed at several utilities in the United States. Project accomplishments were numerous and included (1) making available a state of the art time series platform to the community, (2) collecting over 520 streams of time series data from grid sensors totaling over 1 trillion grid measurements, and (3) developing and nurturing a community within the industry focused on the use of data to create value for utilities and, ultimately, end consumers.

Legacy Survey of Space and Time Data Preview 2

We present Rubin Data Preview 2 (DP2), the second data preview from the NDF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory. Data Preview 2 (DP2) comprises coadds, detection catalogs, and ancillary data products; and when fully released will also include single-epoch images and difference images. DP2 is derived from observations acquired by the LSST Science Camera (LSSTCam) on the Simonyi Survey Telescope at the Summit Facility on Cerro Pachón, Chile, primarily during the on-sky commissioning campaign between 2025-04-16 and 2025-09-21, supplemented by observations taken between 2025-10-25 and 2026-01-06 that overlap the commissioning footprint. The DP2 footprint comprises the Science Validation wide-area survey, five Deep Drilling Fields, and a number of targeted small-field regions, including Trifid and Lagoon, Prawn, M49, and New Horizons, all observed as part of the Rubin First Look campaign. Each field was imaged in up to six broad photometric bands, ugrizy, and coadded to produce deep imaging covering an estimated 3,000 deg2. The addition of single-visit-only areas expands the total DP2 footprint to an estimated 15,000 deg2, with coverage in at least one filter. The median per-visit PSF FWHM across the wide-area survey ranges from 1.17 arcsec in the z band to 1.26 arcsec in g and r bands. The deepest field, reaches estimated coadded 5σ depths of u=26 mag, g=26.8 mag, r=26.3 mag, i=26.1 mag, z=25.3 mag, y=23.9 mag. Based on a roughly five-month primary observing baseline and covering only part of the eventual LSST footprint, DP2's area, depth, and multiband coverage nonetheless support a broad range of early science investigations ahead of LSST Data Release

The deepest field, reaches estimated coadded 5σ depths of u=26 mag, g=26.8 mag, r=26.3 mag, i=26.1 mag, z=25.3 mag, y=23.9 mag. Based on a roughly five-month primary observing baseline and covering only part of the eventual LSST footprint, DP2's area, depth, and multiband coverage nonetheless support a broad range of early science investigations ahead of LSST Data Release This dataset is a subset of the full data release consisting of a searchable catalog named Object. This catalog contains detections from deep co-adds. This catalog contains 786,420,720 rows with 1,248 columns.

Legacy Survey of Space and Time Data Preview 2: object_forced_source dataset type
