Nuclear isomers correspond to excited states in nuclides with finite lifetimes. Here, after the discovery of isotopes–different nuclides of the same element–in 1913 by Frederick Soddy [Citation1], Otto Hahn postulated in 1921 [Citation2] that there are even different metastable states within one isotope. In analogy to chemical isomers, which are the same compounds with distinct structures, nuclear isomers have the same number of protons and neutrons but in different configurations.

Secondary metabolites are small molecules produced by all corners of life, often with specialized bioactive functions with clinical and environmental relevance. Secondary metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) can often be identified within DNA sequences by various sequence similarity tools, but determining the exact functions of genes in the pathway and predicting their chemical products can often only be done by careful, manual comparative analysis. To facilitate this, we report the first release of the secondary metabolism collaboratory (SMC), which aims to provide a comprehensive, tool-agnostic repository of BGC sequence data drawn from all publicly available and user-submitted bacterial and archaeal genome and contig sources. On the website, users are provided a searchable catalog of putative BGCs identified from each source, along with visualizations of gene and domain annotations derived from multiple sequence analysis tools. SMC’s data is also available through publicly-accessible application programming interface (API) endpoints to facilitate programmatic access. Users are encouraged to share their findings (and search for others’) through comment posts on BGC and source pages. At the time of writing, SMC is the largest repository of BGC information, holding 13.1M BGC regions from 1.3M source sequences and growing, and can be found at https://smc.jgi.doe.gov.

A bioinformatics workflow for deduplicating, QC-ing, and annotating viral genomes recovered from metagenomic sequencing.
With the rapid increase in vehicle electrification, there is a need for up-to-date, publicly available national data to understand end user charging and driving patterns, as well as vehicle and infrastructure performance, to inform research planning. Energetics worked with various partners to collect and analyze plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) and electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) data from 2019 to 2022. All sensitive attributes have been removed from this publicly available dataset. Researchers from one of the partner national labs under non-disclosure agreement (NDA) can request access to additional attributes by reaching out to evwattsdata@energetics.com.
In support of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Storage Grand Challenge, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is applying its rich history of battery research and development to provide the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and industry with a guide to current energy storage costs and performance metrics for various technologies. Cost and performance metrics for individual technologies track the following to provide an overall cost of ownership for each technology: cost to procure, install, and connect an energy storage system; associated operational and maintenance costs; and end-of-life costs. These metrics are intended to support DOE and industry stakeholders in making sound decisions about future R&D directions and priorities that move the United States closer to its goal of energy independence. The technologies currently being evaluated are lithium-ion [lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and nickel manganese cobalt (NMC)] batteries, vanadium redox flow batteries, lead-acid batteries, zinc-based batteries, hydrogen energy storage, pumped storage hydropower, gravitational energy storage, compressed air energy storage, and thermal energy storage.
This dataset contains ab-initio calculation results for the temperature-dependent anomalous Hall conductivity, the anomalous Nernst effect, and the Seebeck coefficient. All calculations are based on ab-inito Quantum Espresso (PWSCF v.6.3) + Wannier90 (v.3.0.0). The dependence on carrier doping is also calculated. For all calculations a ferromagnetic order has been assumed, which might not correspond to the true ground state of the system. Tabulated values for the magnetic moments and essential input files for Quantum Espresso are available for download as attachments. Emission mitigation and safe geologic carbon storage require an understanding of local wellbore infrastructure, yet well data are siloed across many entities. Addressing this challenge, the National Energy Technology Laboratory published CO2-Locate, an integrated and dynamic national wellbore geodatabase. CO2-Locate offers up to date well data spanning more than 40 federal, state, and tribal entities, as well as spatially summarized insights designed to support commercial, regulatory, and research communities as they strive to curb climate change through a national energy transition.

MONet provides novel soil molecular data to the research community for understanding biogeochemical processes and complementing other soil datasets. This study assesses MONet's ability to replicate known soil patterns via a comparative analysis of soil respiration (Rs), pH, and clay content against benchmark datasets. Results show moderate agreement for pH and clay content, highlighting MONet's strengths in capturing soil biogeochemical variation in underrepresented regions like urban areas. Rs data are marked by the appropriate trends relative to other datasets, but direct comparison is impractical due to methodological differences in underlying data. Strategic sampling is recommended to improve MONet's coverage and eventual utility in bridging molecular observations with global datasets.
