Legacy Survey of Space and Time Data Preview 2: survey property dataset type

We present Rubin Data Preview 2 (DP2), the second data preview from the NDF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory. Data Preview 2 (DP2) comprises coadds, detection catalogs, and ancillary data products; and when fully released will also include single-epoch images and difference images. DP2 is derived from observations acquired by the LSST Science Camera (LSSTCam) on the Simonyi Survey Telescope at the Summit Facility on Cerro Pachón, Chile, primarily during the on-sky commissioning campaign between 2025-04-16 and 2025-09-21, supplemented by observations taken between 2025-10-25 and 2026-01-06 that overlap the commissioning footprint. The DP2 footprint comprises the Science Validation wide-area survey, five Deep Drilling Fields, and a number of targeted small-field regions, including Trifid and Lagoon, Prawn, M49, and New Horizons, all observed as part of the Rubin First Look campaign. Each field was imaged in up to six broad photometric bands, ugrizy, and coadded to produce deep imaging covering an estimated 3,000 deg2. The addition of single-visit-only areas expands the total DP2 footprint to an estimated 15,000 deg2, with coverage in at least one filter. The median per-visit PSF FWHM across the wide-area survey ranges from 1.17 arcsec in the z band to 1.26 arcsec in g and r bands. The deepest field, reaches estimated coadded 5σ depths of u=26 mag, g=26.8 mag, r=26.3 mag, i=26.1 mag, z=25.3 mag, y=23.9 mag. Based on a roughly five-month primary observing baseline and covering only part of the eventual LSST footprint, DP2's area, depth, and multiband coverage nonetheless support a broad range of early science investigations ahead of LSST Data Release This dataset is a subset of the full data release consisting of the survey property dataset type. These are healSparse property maps for the survey. This release contains 84 datasets of this type.

Theoretical studies of chemical reactions related to the formation and growth of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and molecular properties of their key intermediates (Final Progress Report)

The formation mechanisms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, (PAHs) – organic molecules carrying fused benzene rings – are of great interest to scientists and engineers due to their importance in combustion chemistry and astrochemistry. On Earth, PAHs are largely produced in incomplete combustion of fossil fuel and are considered as critical precursors to unwanted soot particles leading to combustion inefficiency and causing air pollution along with detrimental health effects. Simple PAH molecules initially formed in the gas phase, are further involved in a build-up process in combustion flames leading to larger PAH, bowl-shaped nanostructures, fullerenes, and solid-phase species including carbonaceous dust, graphene particles, and soot. In deep space, PAH and their derivatives are potential key intermediates and nucleation sites leading eventually to carbonaceous nanoparticles (“interstellar grains”). Therefore, the understanding of the key processes in the synthesis of PAHs along with their precursors and their degradation mechanisms in combustion systems and in interstellar, circumstellar, and planetary atmospheric environments will provide critical insights into how complex aromatic structures, carbonaceous nanoparticles, and fullerenes are formed and destroyed. Achieving this understanding is an important step in the development of the efficient combustion processes and of the ecofriendly devices with reduced environmental pollution as well as technological strategies for the production of hydrogen and solid carbon through thermal or plasma-assisted pyrolysis of natural gas and biomass. Also, the understanding of the key processes of PAH and soot growth will help in our comprehension of chemical evolution in the universe. Detailed information on the mechanisms and reliable rate constants of the key elementary chemical reactions involved in PAH formation and destruction processes and in inception of soot particles is often missing, with the main deficiencies being the absence of temperature- and pressure-dependent rate constants for the broad range of conditions occurring in various terrestrial and interstellar processes and the lack of data on the reaction products and their branching ratios. Complementary to experimental studies, these gaps in knowledge can be filled by using quantum chemical calculations of reaction potential energy surfaces providing us with accurate energies of reaction products, intermediates, and transition states, revealing the reaction mechanism, and giving the molecular properties required to compute rate constants for relevant reaction steps and product branching ratios using the RRKM-Master Equation (ME) method. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations can be used in cases when a reaction rate cannot be properly described by statistical theories. During the terminal renewal project period we employed these ab initio/RRKM-ME and MD approaches to complete our studies on several key reactions relevant to the formation/growth of PAH and inception of soot particles including (1) the reaction mechanism and kinetics of the resonance stabilized fulvenallenyl radical with propargyl and C 3 H 4 isomers; (2) the reaction mechanism and kinetics for the C + indene and C 2 + styrene reactions producing naphthyl or azulenyl radicals in low-temperature environments; (3) the MD study of non-equilibrium dimerization of acepyrene and coronene and its radical. The information derived from our theoretical calculations contributed to a better fundamental understanding of the reaction mechanisms and provide missing critical kinetic data to improve combustion models of hydrocarbon fuels and astrochemical models of the growth of carbonaceous molecules and particles in cold molecular clouds, circumstellar envelopes, and planetary atmospheres.

Analysis of neptunium oxides produced through modified direct denitration

Production of neptunium-237 ( 237 Np) target materials for plutonium-238 ( 238 Pu) radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) for deep space exploration requires advanced chemistry and engineering development. Currently, the domestic Pu-238 Supply Program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory produces neptunium dioxide (NpO 2 ) for target material using a modified direct denitration (MDD) flowsheet. Although the chemistry, reaction mechanisms, and product characteristics of MDD are well understood for uranium, corresponding studies of the neptunium system are still needed to continue optimization of target material properties, production equipment design, and production flowsheets. Here, the objective of this work is to characterize crystalline phases, morphology, surface texture, and particle size of NpO 2 produced via MDD reactions. Solid-phase characterization techniques, including powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD) and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), were employed to achieve this objective. Subsequent data processing using the Morphological Analysis for Material Attribution (MAMA) software was performed to analyze particle morphology and size. Broadly, the powders were found to contain a mixture of NpO 2 and Np 2 O 5 after denitration with a variety of morphologies. After high-firing, the product was found to be NpO 2 with a typical polycrystalline oxide morphology and a grain size ranging from 0.72 to 0.94 µm. These analyses provide knowledge on the reaction pathway for a non-traditional NpO 2 synthesis method and offer additional unique insight into production-scale environments for transuranic materials.

Computational Workflow for Accelerated Molecular Design Using Quantum Chemical Simulations and Deep Learning Models

Efficient methods for searching the chemical space of molecular compounds are needed to automate and accelerate the design of new functional molecules such as pharmaceuticals. Given the high cost in both resources and time for experimental efforts, computational approaches play a key role in guiding the selection of promising molecules for further investigation. Here, we construct a workflow to accelerate design by combining approximate quantum chemical methods [i.e. density-functional tight-binding (DFTB)], a graph convolutional neural network (GCNN) surrogate model for chemical property prediction, and a masked language model (MLM) for molecule generation. Property data from the DFTB calculations are used to train the surrogate model; the surrogate model is used to score candidates generated by the MLM. The surrogate reduces computation time by orders of magnitude compared to the DFTB calculations, enabling an increased search of chemical space. Furthermore, the MLM generates a diverse set of chemical modifications based on pre-training from a large compound library. We utilize the workflow to search for near-infrared photoactive molecules by minimizing the predicted HOMO-LUMO gap as the target property. Our results show that the workflow can generate optimized molecules outside of the original training set, which suggests that iterations of the workflow could be useful for searching vast chemical spaces in a wide range of design problems.

COMPUTATIONAL MODELING OF IGNITION AND PREMIXED FLAME PROPAGATION INITIATED BY A PRE-CHAMBER TURBULENT JET

Addressing the pressing need for reduced carbon emissions, Turbulent Jet Ignition (TJI) emerges as a promising technology for ultra-lean combustion, offering enhanced thermal efficiencies and minimized cyclic variability in spark-ignited engines. To facilitate rapid testing and integration of this technology, a robust computational modeling framework is crucial. This study delves into the predictive capabilities of computational models for main-chamber ignition and premixed flame propagation using a single-cycle TJI rig measured by Biswas et al. (Applied Thermal Engineering, vol 106, 2016). Employing an open-source compressible flow simulation solver with Large Eddy Simulation (LES) for turbulence modeling, the investigation integrates the conventional Laminar Finite Rate Chemistry (LFRC) model alongside the transported Probability Density Method (PDF) for turbulence-chemistry interaction. A fully-consistent Eulerian Monte-Carlo Fields (EMCF) method is utilized to approximate the transported PDF, while Interaction by Exchange with Mean is employed to close micro-mixing terms in stochastic differential equations. A reduced chemical reaction mechanism with 21 species and 84 reactions (DRM-19) is used for solving chemical kinetics, and a double Gaussian energy deposition model is used to approximate the spark ignition in the pre-chamber. An unstructured O-grid mesh with 0.3 million cells in the prechamber and 1 million cells in the main chamber is employed. Results are divided into two phases: pre-chamber initialization and full TJI simulations. Validation of the predicted pre-chamber flame propagation and the lean ignition in the main-chamber is carried out by using available experimental data. Under quiescent conditions, both the LFRC and transported PDF methods largely underestimate the flame speed and subsequent pressure growth in the pre-chamber. A linear momentum forcing technique is applied to investigate the impact of initial turbulence in the pre-chamber, demonstrating a notable influence on flame propagation. Fine-tuning of the forcing coefficient reproduces the sudden pressure growth observed in the experiment. The experimentally validated pre-chamber simulation serves as the initial condition for the full TJI simulations. It is found that the LFRC model fails to predict lean-ignition in the main-chamber, resulting in a misfiring event. Incorporation of turbulence-chemistry interaction using the transported PDF method substantially improves the prediction of the ignition event in the main-chamber, achieving fair qualitative agreement and quantitative validation of combustion parameters within ±10% of the reported experimental data. The rich simulation results consisting of a full set of statistical description of the thermo-chemical states enable us to gain deep insights into the ignition mechanisms in the main chamber, which is limited when done experimentally. A novel dual ignition phenomenon is revealed in the TJI rig for the first time. Initially, a primary ignition kernel is formed at a downstream location which eventually detaches from the main jet. As the jet momentum decreases, a secondary ignition event follows, this time at a more upstream location which eventually combines with the primary ignition kernel to form a single connected flame front. Investigation of these ignition sequences in chemical composition space reveal distinct differences between the two. The primary ignition event in the main-chamber is followed by a large concentration of active radicals from the pre-chamber jet, accelerating the chain-branching steps, characterizing what has been referred to as flame ignition. In contrast, the secondary ignition occurs in the absence of active radicals in the pre-chamber jet, hence characterized as jet ignition. Further analysis of the effect of pre-chamber jet characteristics on lean ignition in the main-chamber is conducted by setting up cases with different initial pressure ratios (por) between the two chambers, a non-dimensional parameter, ranging from 1.2 to 3.2. As the initial pressure ratio increases, jet momentum increases, with dual ignition observed in cases above por= 2.2. Case with por= 3.2 lead to misfiring. The effect of ignition sequence on global combustion characteristics of TJI is analyzed. Dual ignition events lead to non-monotonicity in combustion characteristics such as global reaction progress variable, flame penetration, and global heat release rate. In dual ignition events, although the rate of fuel consumption and global heat release rate is initially lower, the secondary ignition leads to a sudden increase in flame surface area, resulting in a sudden jump and promoting the overall performance of the TJI system.

Assessing CLUBB PDF Closure Assumptions for a Continental Shallow-to-Deep Convective Transition Case Over Multiple Spatial Scales

Assumed-PDF (probability density function) higher-order turbulence closures (APHOCs) are now widely used for parameterizing boundary layer turbulence and shallow convection in Earth system models (ESMs). A better understanding of the resolution-dependent behavior of APHOCs is essential for improving the performance of next-generation ESMs with intended horizontal resolutions finer than 10 km. In this study, we evaluate the PDF family of Analytic double-Gaussian 1 implemented in Cloud Layers Unified By Binormals (CLUBB) over a range of spatial scales (Dx) from 2 to 100 km. A 120-km-wide large eddy simulation (LES) for a continental convection case during 2016 Holistic Interactions of Shallow Clouds, Aerosols, and Land-Ecosystems (HI-SCALE) field campaign serves as benchmark to evaluate the PDF closure using an off-line approach. We find during the shallow convection period, the CLUBB PDF closure tends to produce positive biases of cloud properties and liquid water flux near cloud base for all scales of analysis. It produces negative biases for these variables near cloud top that are more severe for Dx larger than 25 km. Results show that replacing the CLUBB-parameterized moisture and temperature skewnesses with LES-derived ones can fix most of the biases if clipping of input moments is allowed to prevent the occurrence of unrealizable solutions. Overall, the performance of the PDF closure is better for smaller Dx = 2–5 km than for larger Dx = 50–100 km; for a given grid spacing, it is better when the convective clouds become deeper in the late afternoon. Likely causes for the resolution dependence and implications for improving the PDF closure are discussed.
