Interpretations of the ATLAS measurements of Higgs boson production and decay rates and differential cross-sections in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Measurements of the Higgs boson production times decay rates and differential cross-sections have recently been performed by the ATLAS experiment in several decay channels using up to 139 fb -1 of proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV recorded at the Large Hadron Collider. This paper presents multiple interpretations of these Higgs boson measurements. Measurements of production-mode cross-sections, simplified template cross-sections and fiducial differential cross-sections in different decay channels are reparameterised in terms of the impact of Standard Model effective field theory operators, and constraints are reported on the corresponding Wilson coefficients. Production and decay rate measurements are interpreted in UV-complete extensions of the Standard Model, namely the two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) near the alignment limit and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) for various MSSM benchmark scenarios. The constraints on the 2HDM parameters (cos(β - α), tanβ) and the MSSM parameters (m A , tanβ) are complementary to those obtained from direct searches for additional Higgs bosons.

Search for new particles in events with a hadronically decaying W or Z boson and large missing transverse momentum at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV using the ATLAS detector

A search is presented for new particles produced in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV that result in final states comprising a massive vector ( W or Z ) boson that decays hadronically and large missing transverse momentum. The data sample was collected with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider from 2015 to 2018 and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb - 1 . No significant excess over the Standard Model expectation is observed. Model-independent 95% confidence-level limits on the visible cross-section that range from 0.3 fb to 79.5 fb are obtained for non-Standard-Model processes. Exclusion limits are also presented for models with axion-like particles, for two-Higgs-doublet models with a pseudo-scalar mediator between the Standard Model and the dark sector, for the invisible decay of the Higgs boson and for pair-produced weakly interacting dark matter candidates.

Search for heavy Higgs bosons with flavour-violating couplings in multi-lepton plus b-jets final states in pp collisions at 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for new heavy scalars with flavour-violating decays in final states with multiple leptons and b-tagged jets is presented. The results are interpreted in terms of a general two-Higgs-doublet model involving an additional scalar with couplings to the top-quark and the three up-type quarks (ρ tt , ρ tc , and ρ tu ). The targeted signals lead to final states with either a same-sign top-quark pair, three top-quarks, or four top-quarks. The search is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb –1 . Events are categorised depending on the multiplicity of light charged leptons (electrons or muons), total lepton charge, and a deep-neural-network output to enhance the purity of each of the signals. Masses of an additional scalar boson m H between 200 – 630 GeV with couplings ρ tt = 0.4, ρ tc = 0.2, and ρ tu = 0.2 are excluded at 95% confidence level. Additional interpretations are provided in models of R-parity violating supersymmetry, motivated by the recent flavour and (g – 2) μ anomalies.

Search for a light CP-odd Higgs boson decaying into a pair of τ -leptons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper reports a search for a light CP-odd scalar resonance with a mass of 20 GeV to 90 GeV in 13 TeV proton-proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb -1 collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis assumes the resonance is produced via gluon-gluon fusion and decays into a $τ^+ τ^-$ pair which subsequently decays into a fully leptonic $µ^+ ν_µ \overline{ν}_τ e^- \overline{ν}_ e ν_τ$ or $e^+ ν_e \overline{ν}_τ µ^- \overline{ν}_µ ν_τ$ final state. No significant excess of events above the predicted Standard Model background is observed. The results are interpreted within a favour-aligned two-Higgs-doublet model, and a model independent cross-section interpretation is also given. Upper limits at 95% confidence level between 3.0 pb and 68 pb are set on the cross-section for producing a CP-odd Higgs boson that decays into a $τ^+ τ^-$ pair.

Improved Statistics for F-theory Standard Models

Much of the analysis of F-theory-based Standard Models boils down to computing cohomologies of line bundles on matter curves. By varying parameters one can degenerate such matter curves to singular ones, typically with many nodes, where the computation is combinatorial and straightforward. The question remains to relate the (a priori possibly smaller) value on the original curve to the singular one. In this work, we introduce some elementary techniques (pruning trees and removing interior edges) for simplifying the resulting nodal curves to a small collection of terminal ones that can be handled directly. When applied to the QSMs, these techniques yield optimal results in the sense that obtaining more precise answers would require currently unavailable information about the QSM geometries. This provides us with an opportunity to enhance the statistical bounds established in earlier research regarding the absence of vector-like exotics on the quark-doublet curve.

Formation of phosphorus monoxide through the $$\mathbf {P}(^{4}S)+\mathbf {O}_{\mathbf {2}}(^{3}\Sigma ^{-})\rightarrow \mathbf {O}(^{3}P)+\mathbf {PO}(^{2}\Pi )$$ reaction

Phosphorus is a key and vital element for a diverse set of important biological molecules, being indispensable for life as we know. A deeper comprehension of its role in astrochemistry and atmospheric chemistry may aid in finding answers to how this element became available on Earth. The PO molecule is one of the main reservoirs of phosphorus in the interstellar medium (ISM), and a better understanding of the mechanisms and rate coefficients for its formation in the ISM is important for modelling its abundances. Here in this work, we perform multireference configuration interaction calculations on the formation of PO via the P( 4 S) + O 2 (3 Σ - ) reaction, analyzing its potential energy surface and rate coefficients for the global reaction on both doublet and quartet states. We also perform DFT (M06-2X) and CCSD(T) calculations, in order to compare the results. We found that the OPO system possesses a high multiconfigurational character, making DFT and CCSD methodologies not suitable for its potential energy landscape calculation. The rate coefficients have been calculated using the master equation system solver (MESS) package, and the results compared to recent experimental data. It is shown that the quartet state contributes for temperatures higher than 700K. The computed rate coefficient can be described by a modified Arrhenius equation [α(T/300) β exp (-γ/T)] with α = 1.44 x 10 -12 cm 3 s -1 , β= -1.66 and γ= 704 K.

Glassy correlated state induced by disorder in the frustrated antiferromagnet Tb 2 Zr 2 O 7

Here, we study the low-temperature thermomagnetic properties of the polycrystalline material Tb 2 Zr 2 O 7 through ac susceptibility and specific heat measurements. This zirconate displays a defect-fluorite structure in which the magnetic Tb 3+ and nonmagnetic Zr 4+ cations sit randomly on the same metal sublattice. No long-range magnetic order is found down to 100 mK, although dominant antiferromagnetic interactions are observed and the spins remain dynamic down to the lowest temperatures investigated. We observed a frequency-dependent peak around 2.5 K which is well described by many models of a canonical spin-glass transition. In-field specific heat measurements and the recovered entropy of the system R ln(4) suggest a two doublets ground state separated by 7 K. Comparisons to the pyrochlores Tb 2 Ti 2 O 7 and Tb 2 Hf 2 O 7 reinforce the collective spin-glass-type behavior and the opening for discussions of an exotic Coulomb phase in this material.

Spectroscopy and electronic structure of the low-energy states of ThN

The electronic spectrum of ThN over the range 19,600–21,200 cm -1 is remarkably congested, showing at least twenty vibronic bands originating from the ground state zero-point level. Rotationally resolved spectra for eleven of these bands have been examined to probe the underlying reasons for the dense manifold of states. Dispersed fluorescence spectra and fluorescence decay lifetimes were measured to provide addition insights. Our experimental measurements were complemented by electronic structure calculations for the low-energy doublet and quartet states. The ab initio calculations yielded a density of excited states that was consistent with the congested spectrum. These states were derived from the formal configurations Th 3+ (6d)N 3- , Th 2+ (7s 2 )N 2- (2p 5 ) and Th 2+ (7s6d)N 2 -(2p 5 ). The calculations indicated that the rotational and vibrational constants would be characteristic of the electronic configurations. This prediction was not borne out by the experimental data, suggesting that the full range of inter-configurational state interactions were not captured by the computational model.

The j and k dependencies of the line coupling and line mixing effects: Theoretical studies of the relaxation matrices of N 2 -broadened CH 3 D

Line coupling and line mixing effects in parallel and perpendicular bands of CH 3 D perturbed by N 2 have been studied. The work focuses on exhibiting the j and k dependencies of these two processes. The calculations were based on a previously reported anisotropic intermolecular potential including both the long-range multipole, induction, and dispersion forces and a short-range atom-atom model. Throughout this work, it is shown that components with L 1 = 3 of the atom-atom model are dominant contributions to the diffusion operator. As a consequence, in comparison with other molecular systems such as the CH 3 Cl-N 2 and CH 3 I-N 2 , theoretically predicted line coupling and line mixing effects exhibit completely new j and k dependencies. In general, the theoretically calculated halfwidths and intra-doublets’ off-diagonal elements of the relaxation matrix are in reasonable agreement with measurements.

Hadron blind Cherenkov counters

A Hadron Blind Detector, or HBD, is a novel form of Cherenkov counter that is designed to provide high efficiency for detecting highly relativistic electrons while being essentially blind to most hadrons. Herein, we present some of the most prominent realizations of the HBD concept in real experiments. We describe the first implementation of an HBD that was made in the CERES experiment at CERN using a spectrometer based on a doublet of hadron blind RICH detectors for the measurement of low-mass electron pairs in pA and AA collisions at the SPS. We next present a detailed account of a more extensive realization of the HBD that was made in the PHENIX experiment for the measurement of low-mass electron pairs in central heavy-ion collisions at RHIC, followed by a description of a very similar detector that is currently under construction at J-PARC for the measurement of vector mesons through their e + e – decay in pA collisions. We conclude with a brief discussion of possible evolutions of the HBD concept as well as possible developments and uses of HBDs in experiments at the future Electron Ion Collider.

Enhanced tensor polarization in solid-state targets

In this work, we report measurements of enhanced tensor polarization on solid-state targets. The results here represent an increase in tensor polarization over that previously achieved in high energy and nuclear scattering experiments that focused on the measurement of tensor polarized observables. Enhancement techniques are used which require RF produced close to the Larmor frequency of the target spins and use selective semi-saturation resulting from two sources of irradiation, microwave for the DNP process and the additional RF used to manipulate the population of the energy levels in the target material. The spin dynamics of the solid target are used to align the spins enhancing the ensemble average to improve the figure of merit of the scattering experiment. Target rotation at an optimized rate can lead to additional enhancement by applying selective semi-saturation in polycrystalline materials that possess a Pake doublet in their NMR signal.

Tapered helical undulator system for high efficiency energy extraction from a high brightness electron beam

In this work we discuss the design choices and construction strategy of the tapered undulator system designed for a high energy extraction efficiency experiment in the ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum planned for installation at the Argonne National Laboratory Linac Extension Area (LEA) beamline. The undulator is comprised of 4 sections pure permanent magnet Halbach array separated by short break sections, each one of them housing a focusing quadrupole doublet and a phase shifter. The quadrupoles use a novel hybrid design which allows one to vary the gradient and match the beam transversely. Finally, the undulator tapering profile is optimized to maximize the energy conversion efficiency from a 340 MeV 1 kA beam into coherent 257.5 nm radiation taking into account the longitudinal current profile generated by the linac.

Plasmonic Ag nanocomposite phosphate glasses produced via γ-ray irradiation as reduction route

This paper reports on the impact of γ-ray irradiation (10, 100 kGy) on melt-quenched Ag + -doped phosphate glass and the effects of subsequent thermal processing leading to the production of plasmonic Ag nanocomposites. The γ-irradiated glasses were characterized alongside the pristine by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Raman spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, optical absorption, and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. DSC characterization showed consistent glass transition temperatures (T g ) before and after γ-irradiation whereas the crystallization temperatures tended to decrease with increasing γ-ray dose. However, a lack of alteration of the glass network structure was supported by Raman spectroscopy. Room temperature EPR spectra clearly showed the formation of phosphorus oxygen hole center (POHC) defects in the undoped host, in addition to another doublet likely associated with a P 3 defect. The presence of paramagnetic silver species encompassing Ag 2+ and 107/109 Ag 0 atoms was also indicated in the silver-activated glass together with POHC defects. Optical absorption spectra were also consistent with the presence of various radiation-induced centers. Further analyzing the glass absorption edge via Tauc plots suggested the formation of electron center (EC) defects in γ-irradiated samples wherein the silver-doped glass exhibited decreasing band gap energies with increasing γ-ray dose. The PL characterization showed the silver-related radio-PL effect was induced exhibiting broad band emission with two maxima around 500 and 625 nm stemming from various molecular Ag$^{x+}_{n}$ clusters. Emission decay analyses revealed that the longer wavelength emission exhibited slower decay. The highest radiation dose of 100 kGy however resulted in weaker emission and faster decay kinetics attributed to energy transfer between the luminescent silver species and POHC defects. Finally subjecting the γ-irradiated Ag-doped glasses to heat treatment near the T g at 490 °C led to the development of the surface plasmon resonance of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and the vanishing of the Ag$^{x+}_{n}$ clusters luminescence. In conclusion, the presence of the matrix-related EC defects was deemed accountable for the thermally induced reduction and consequent precipitation of Ag NPs making the plasmonic glasses attractive for photonic applications such as nonlinear optics.

Hierarchical quark and lepton masses with sequential U(1) gauge symmetry

Instead of right-handed neutrino singlets, the standard model is extended to include lepton triplets (Σ + , Σ 0 , Σ - ). Each quark and lepton family may now transform under an anomaly-free U(1) X gauge symmetry, known already for many years. A new sequential application is presented, using just the one Higgs doublet of the standard model, together with two U(1) X Higgs singlets. The resulting structure has hierarchical quark and lepton masses, as well as a viable seesaw neutrino mass matrix.

Search for associated production of a Z boson with an invisibly decaying Higgs boson or dark matter candidates at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for invisible decays of the Higgs boson as well as searches for dark matter candidates, produced together with a leptonically decaying Z boson, are presented. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, delivered by the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 and recorded by the ATLAS experiment. Assuming Standard Model cross-sections for ZH production, the observed (expected) upper limit on the branching ratio of the Higgs boson to invisible particles is found to be 19% (19%) at the 95% confidence level. Exclusion limits are also set for simplified dark matter models and two-Higgs-doublet models with an additional pseudoscalar mediator.

Search for heavy neutral Higgs bosons A and H in the $t\bar{t}$Z channel in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV

A direct search for new heavy neutral Higgs bosons A and H in the $t\bar{t}$Z channel is presented, targeting the process pp → A → ZH with H → $t\bar{t}$. For the first time, the channel with decays of the Z boson to muons or electrons in association with all-hadronic decays of the $t\bar{t}$ system is targeted. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data collected at the CERN LHC with the CMS experiment at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV, which correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . No signal is observed. Upper limits on the product of the cross section and branching fractions are derived for narrow resonances A and H with masses up to 2100 and 2000 GeV, respectively, assuming A boson production through gluon fusion. The results are also interpreted within two-Higgs-doublet models, where A and H are CP-odd and CP-even states, respectively, complementing and substantially extending the reach of previous searches.

Search for Higgs boson decays into a Z boson and a light hadronically decaying resonance in pp collisions at s =13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for decays of the Higgs boson into a Z boson and a light resonance, with a mass of 0.5–3.5 GeV, is performed using the full 140 fb−1 dataset of 13 TeV proton–proton collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector during LHC Run 2. Leptonic decays of the Z boson and hadronic decays of the light resonance are considered. The resonance can be interpreted as a J / ψ or η c meson, an axion-like particle, or a light pseudoscalar predicted in two-Higgs-doublet models. Due to its low mass, this resonance is produced with a high Lorentz boost in the laboratory frame and therefore reconstructed as a single small-radius jet of hadrons. A neural network is used to correct the Monte Carlo simulation of the total expected background using data from sideband regions. Two additional neural networks are used to distinguish signal from background, enhancing the purity of the signal region. A binned profile-likelihood fit is performed on the final-state invariant mass distribution. No significant excess of events relative to the expected background is observed, and upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the Higgs boson's branching fraction to a Z boson and a light resonance. The exclusion limit is ∼10% for the lower masses, and increases for higher masses. Upper limits on the effective coupling C Z H eff / Λ of an axion-like particle to a Higgs boson and Z boson are also set at 95% confidence level, and range from 0.9 to 2 TeV−1.

Cascading from $\mathscr{N}$ = 2 supersymmetric Yang–Mills theory to confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in adjoint QCD

We argue that adjoint QCD in 3 + 1 dimensions, with any SU(N) gauge group and two Weyl fermion flavors (i.e. one adjoint Dirac fermion), confines and spontaneously breaks its chiral symmetries via the condensation of a fermion bilinear. We flow to this theory from pure $\mathscr{N}$ = 2 SUSY Yang–Mills theory with the same gauge group, by giving a SUSY-breaking mass M to the scalars in the $\mathscr{N}$ = 2 vector multiplet. This flow can be analyzed rigorously at small M, where it leads to a deconfined vacuum at the origin of the $\mathscr{N}$ = 2 Coulomb branch. The analysis can be extended to all M using an Abelian dual description that arises from the N multi-monopole points of the $\mathscr{N}$ = 2 theory. At each such point, there are N −1 hypermultiplet Higgs fields h$^{i=1,2}_m$, which are SU(2) R doublets. We provide a detailed study of the phase diagram as a function of M, by analyzing the semi-classical phases of the dual using a combination of analytic and numerical techniques. The result is a cascade of first-order phase transitions, along which the Higgs fields h i m successively turn on, and which interpolates between the Coulomb branch at small M, where all h$^{i}_m$ = 0, and a maximal Higgs branch, where all h$^{i}_m$ ≠ 0, at sufficiently large M. We show that this maximal Higgs branch precisely matches the confining and chiral symmetry breaking phase of two-flavor adjoint QCD, including its broken and unbroken symmetries, its massless spectrum, and the expected large-N scaling of various observables. The spontaneous breaking pattern SU(2) R → U(1) R , consistent with the Vafa–Witten theorem, is ensured by an intricate alignment mechanism for the h$^{i}_m$ in the dual, and leads to a CP 1 sigma model of increasing radius along the cascade.
