Advances in dual algorithms and convex approximation methods

A new algorithm for solving the duals of separable convex optimization problems is presented. The algorithm is based on an active set strategy in conjunction with a variable metric method. This first order algorithm is more reliable than Newton's method used in DUAL-2 because it does not break down when the Hessian matrix becomes singular or nearly singular. A perturbation technique is introduced in order to remove the nondifferentiability of the dual function which arises when linear constraints are present in the approximate problem.

Microwave time delays for the dual L-C-band feed system

A new dual-frequency feed system at Goldstone is designed to receive the Phobos spacecraft signal at L-band (1668 + or - 40 MHz) and transmit to the spacecraft at C-band (5008.75 + or - 5.00 MHz) simultaneously. Hence, calculations of the time delay from the C-band range calibration coupler to the phase center of the L-C dual feed and back to the L-band range calibration coupler are required to correct the range measurements. Time delays of the elements in the dual-frequency feed system are obtained mostly from computer calculations and partly from experimental measurements. The method used and results obtained are described.

Experimental tests of methods for the measurement of rainfall rate using an airborne dual-wavelength radar

Several attenuation-based methods for estimating the rainfall rate were applied to measurements made by an airborne dual-wavelength radar operating at 0.87 cm, the K(a)-band, and at 3 cm, the X-band. These methods included the traditional Z-R methods, designated Z(X)-R and Z(K)-R for the X- and K(a) band wavelengths, respectively; single- and dual-wavelength surface reference techniques (SRT and DSRT, respectively); and standard dual-wavelength methods with and without range-averaging. As the primary sources of error for these methods are nearly independent, agreement among the rain rates obtained with these methods would lend confidence in the results. Correlation coefficients obtained between the rainfall rates with the Z(X)-R and DSRT methods were generally between 0.7 and 0.9. Good agreement among the methods occurred most often in stratiform rain for rain rates betwen a few mm/hr to about 15 mm/hr, i.e., where attenuation at the shorter wavelength is significant but not so severe as to result in a loss of signal.

Principles And Applications Of Dual Adaptive Control

Simulations indicate superiority of dual controller over "cautious" controller. Report discusses principles of design of actively adaptive dual controllers. Focus is upon derivation of control laws for dual controller enhancing identification of parameters of mathematical model of multiple-input/multiple-output system, while controlling it at same time. Tasks of identification and control impose competing requirements.

An algorithm to design finite field multipliers using a self-dual normal basis

The concept of using a self-dual normal basis to design the Massey-Omura finite-field multiplier is presented. An algorithm is given to locate a self-dual normal basis for GF(2m) for odd m. A method to construct the product function for designing the Massey-Omura multiplier is developed. It is shown that the construction of the product function based on a self-dual basis is simpler than that based on an arbitrary normal basis.

Dual-peak solar cycle distribution of intense geomagnetic storms

This paper studies the features of the solar cycle distribution of intense storms (Dst) during cycles 20 and 21 (1965-1985). For these cycles, the distribution of intense storms (including moderate events for this time interval) in terms of Dst values below -50 nT, showed a dual-peak distribution, providing evidence for another enhancement of the intense storm distribution at the late ascending phase of the cycle. The origin of the dual-peak distribution of intense storms is associated with a similar dual-peak distribution obtained for large-amplitude and long-duration values of the negative Bz component of the IMF, computed for the interval 1970-1981.

Retrieval of precipitation profiles from airborne radar and passive radiometer measurements - Comparison with dual-frequency radar measurements

Precipitation-rate profiles derived from a single-frequency radar and a radiometer are compared with profiles derived from a dual-frequency radar, using data obtained during the 1985-1986 Communication Research Laboratory/NASA rain measuring experiment over the Atlantic Ocean from a dual-frequency X- and Ka-band radars and an X-band passive radiometer. Profiles were retrieved using a modification of the Hitschfeld-Bordan (1954) algorithm constrained by a measurement of the path integrated extinction derived from passive radiometry. It was found that the two techniques under comparison yielded average rainfall rates that agreed within about 25 percent. It is suggested that, while a single-frequency radar operating in conjunction with multifrequency passive radiometers might provide cost-effective spaceborne measurements of tropical rainfall distributions, a dual-frequency radar might be able to remove some ambiguities that were encountered in this study.

92 GHz dual-polarized integrated horn antennas

A dual-polarized two-dimensional imaging array was designed for millimeter-wave applications. The dual-polarized design consists of two dipoles perpendicular to each other and suspended on the same membrane inside a pyramidal cavity etched in silicon. The dual-polarized antenna is fully monolithic with room available for processing electronics. The IF or video signals are taken out through a novel bias and feeding structure. The measured polarization isolation is better than 20 dB at 92 GHz, and the orthogonal channels show identical far-field patterns. The antenna is well suited for millimeter-wave polarimetric synthetic-aperture radars (SARs) and high-efficiency balanced-mixer receivers.

Analysis of dual control vibration testing

Analysis of dual control vibration testing is conducted using a two-degree-of-freedom system to represent the interaction between a vibration mode of a test item and a mode of a mounting structure. The results indicate that exact dual control based on specification of the source free acceleration and blocked force is strictly valid only if phase is taken into account. However, extremal dual control without phase alleviates overtesting without risk of undertesting, when the limit acceleration and force specifications are chosen to envelope the coupled system results. Several approaches to deriving appropriate force specifications are explored. Random vibration parametric results from the literature are used to estimate the limit force between coupled oscillators with different source and load masses.

Scanning properties of large dual-shaped offset and symmetric reflector antennas

Several characteristics of dual offset (DOSR) and symmetric shaped reflectors are examined. Among these is the amelioration of the added cost of manufacturing a shaped reflector antenna, particularly a doubly curved surface for the DOSR, if adjustable panels, which may be necessary for correction of gravity and wind distortions, are also used for improving gain by shaping. The scanning properties of shaped reflectors, both offset and circularly symmetric, are examined and compared to conic section scanning characteristics. Scanning of the pencil beam is obtained by lateral and axial translation of a single point-source feed. The feed is kept pointed toward the center of the subreflector. The effects of power spillover and aperture phase error as a function of beam scanning is examined for several different types of large reflector designs including DOSR, circularly symmetric large f/D and smaller f/D dual reflector antenna systems. It is graphically illustrated that the Abbe-sine condition for improving scanning of an optical system cannot, inherently, be satisfied in a dual-shaped reflector system shaped for high gain and low feed spillover.

Aluminum 2219-T87 and 5456-H116 - A comparative study of spacecraft wall materials in dual-wall structures under hypervelocity impact

All earth-orbiting spacecraft are susceptible to high-speed impacts by pieces of orbital debris. To prevent mission failure and possibly loss of life, protection against perforation by high-speed orbital debris particles must be included in the spacecraft design. Although any number of materials can be used to manufacture perforation-resistant structures, aluminum is often used in such systems because of its relatively high strength-to-weight ratio. This paper presents the results of a study in which the high speed impact response characteristics of dual-wall structures made from two different aluminum alloys were analyzed to determine which alloy would be more suitable for use in a perforation-resistant dual-wall structural system that is to be exposed to the orbital debris environment. Impact response characteristics were obtained numerically and experimentally. At impact speeds below 7 km/s, it was found that the two aluminum alloys considered contributed similar levels of perforation resistance; at speeds in excess of 7 km/s, aluminum 2219-T87 was superior to aluminum 5546-H116 in preventing perforation of dual-wall structural systems.

Wind-Tunnel Tests of Four- and Six-Blade Single- and Dual-Rotating Tractor Propellers

Test of 10-foot diameter, four and six blade single-rotating and dual-rotating propellers were conducted in the NACA propeller-research tunnel. The propellers were mounted at the front end of a streamline body incorporating spinners to house the hub portions. The effect of a symmetrical wing mounted in the slipstream ranged from 20 degrees to 65 degrees setting corresponds to airplane speeds greater than 500 miles per hour. The results indicate that dual-rotating propellers were from 0 to 6 percent more efficient than single-rotating ones; but, when the propellers operated in the presence of a wing, the gain was reduced by about one-half. Other advantages of dual-rotating propellers were found to include greater power absorption and greater efficiency at the low V/nD operating range of high-pitch propellers.

Wind-tunnel Tests of Eight-blade Single and Dual-rotating Propellers in the Tractor Position

Tests of 10-ft. diameter, eight-blade, single - and dual - rotating propellers were conducted in 20-ft propeller research tunnel. Propellers were mounted at front end of a streamline body in spinners that covered hubs and parts of shanks. Effect of a symmetrical wing mounted in slipstream was investigated. Blade-angle settings ranged from 20 Degrees to 65 Degrees. Results indicated that dual rotation resulted in gains of from 1 to 8 percent in efficiency over single rotation for eight-blade propellers, but presence of a wing reduced gain about one-half. Greater power absorption caused by dual rotation over flight range and higher efficiency or thrust for range of take-off and climb was indicated

Evaluation of the prototype dual-axis wall attitude measurement sensor

A prototype dual-axis electrolytic tilt sensor package for angular position measurements was built and evaluated in a laboratory environment. The objective was to investigate the use of this package for making wind tunnel wall attitude measurements for the National Transonic Facility (NTF) at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC). The instrumentation may replace an existing, more costly, and less rugged servo accelerometer package (angle-of-attack package) currently in use. The dual-axis electrolytic tilt sensor package contains two commercial electrolytic tilt sensors thermally insulated with NTF foam, all housed within a stainless steel package. The package is actively heated and maintained at 160 F using foil heating elements. The laboratory evaluation consisted of a series of tests to characterize the linearity, repeatability, cross-axis interaction, lead wire effect, step response, thermal time constant, and rectification errors. Tests revealed that the total RMS errors for the x-axis sensor is 0.084 degree, and 0.182 degree for the y-axis sensor. The RMS errors are greater than the 0.01 degree specification required for NTF wall attitude measurements. It is therefore not a viable replacement for the angle-of-attack package in the NTF application. However, with some physical modifications, it can be used as an inexpensive 5-degree range dual-axis inclinometer with overall accuracy approaching 0.01 degree under less harsh environments. Also, the data obtained from the tests can be valuable for wind tunnel applications of most types of electrolytic tilt sensors.

Rainfall Measurement with a Ground Based Dual Frequency Radar

Dual frequency methods are one of the most useful ways to estimate precise rainfall rates. However, there are some difficulties in applying this method to ground based radars because of the existence of a blind zone and possible error in the radar calibration. Because of these problems, supplemental observations such as rain gauges or satellite link estimates of path integrated attenuation (PIA) are needed. This study shows how to estimate rainfall rate with a ground based dual frequency radar with rain gauge and satellite link data. Applications of this method to stratiform rainfall is also shown. This method is compared with single wavelength method. Data were obtained from a dual frequency (10 GHz and 35 GHz) multiparameter radar radiometer built by the Communications Research Laboratory (CRL), Japan, and located at NASA/GSFC during the spring of 1997. Optical rain gauge (ORG) data and broadcasting satellite signal data near the radar t location were also utilized for the calculation.

Mechanical Properties of a Superalloy Disk with a Dual Grain Structure

Mechanical properties from an advanced, nickel-base superalloy disk, with a dual grain structure consisting of a fine grain bore and coarse grain rim, were evaluated. The dual grain structure was produced using NASA's low cost Dual Microstructure Heat Treatment (DMHT) process. The results showed the DMHT disk to have a high strength, fatigue resistant bore comparable to a subsolvus (fine grain) heat treated disk, and a creep resistant rim comparable to a supersolvus (coarse grain) heat treated disk. Additional work on subsolvus solutioning before or after the DMHT conversion appears to be a viable avenue for further improvement in disk properties.

Assessment of NASA Dual Microstructure Heat Treatment Method for Multiple Forging Batch Heat Treatment

NASA dual microstructure heat treatment technology previously demonstrated on single forging heat treat batches of a generic disk shape was successfully demonstrated on a multiple disk batch of a production shape component. A group of four Rolls-Royce Corporation 3rd Stage AE2100 forgings produced from alloy ME209 were successfully dual microstructure heat treated as a single heat treat batch. The forgings responded uniformly as evidenced by part-to-part consistent thermocouple recordings and resultant macrostructures, and from ultrasonic examination. Multiple disk DMHT processing offers a low cost alternative to other published dual microstructure processing techniques.
