Simulating quantum field theories on a quantum computer is one of the most exciting fundamental physics applications of quantum information science. Dynamical time evolution of quantum fields is a challenge that is beyond the capabilities of classical computing, but it can teach us important lessons about the fundamental fabric of space and time. Whether we may answer scientific questions of interest using near-term quantum computing hardware is an open question that requires a detailed simulation study of quantum noise. Here we present a large scale simulation study powered by a multi-node implementation of qsim using the Google Cloud Platform. We additionally employ newly-developed GPU capabilities in qsim and show how Tensor Processing Units -- Application-specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) specialized for Machine Learning -- may be used to dramatically speed up the simulation of large quantum circuits. We demonstrate the use of high performance cloud computing for simulating $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quantum field theories on system sizes up to 36 qubits. We find this lattice size is not able to simulate our problem and observable combination with sufficient accuracy, implying more challenging observables of interest for this theory are likely beyond the reach of classical computation using exact circuit simulation.

Abstract The u -plane integral is the contribution of the Coulomb branch to correlation functions of $${\mathcal {N}}=2$$ N = 2 gauge theory on a compact four-manifold. We consider the u -plane integral for correlators of point and surface observables of topologically twisted theories with gauge group $$\mathrm{SU}(2)$$ SU ( 2 ) , for an arbitrary four-manifold with $$(b_1,b_2^+)=(0,1)$$ ( b 1 , b 2 + ) = ( 0 , 1 ) . The u -plane contribution equals the full correlator in the absence of Seiberg–Witten contributions at strong coupling, and coincides with the mathematically defined Donaldson invariants in such cases. We demonstrate that the u -plane correlators are efficiently determined using mock modular forms for point observables, and Appell–Lerch sums for surface observables. We use these results to discuss the asymptotic behavior of correlators as function of the number of observables. Our findings suggest that the vev of exponentiated point and surface observables is an entire function of the fugacities.
With SU(3) gauge-Higgs theory as an example, we examine critically the idea that the confinement property in an SU(N) gauge-Higgs theory, with the Higgs field in the fundamental representation, persists in an unbroken SU(N-1) subgroup. Published by the American Physical Society 2024
The gauge theory of gravitation introduced by Mansouri and Chang (1976) is investigated; a symbolic manipulation computer system generates the Mansouri-Chang field equations in various coordinate systems. It is found that all vacuum Einstein spaces are vacuum Mansouri-Chang spaces in four dimensions, though for higher dimensions an Einstein vacuum space is not generally a Mansouri-Chang solution. The possibility that no solutions of the Mansouri-Chang equations are not Einstein vacuum spaces is discussed.
We study the superconfomal index of four-dimensional toric quiver gauge theories using a Bethe Ansatz approach recently applied by Benini and Milan. Relying on a particular set of solutions to the corresponding Bethe Ansatz equations we evaluate the superconformal index in the large N limit, thus avoiding to take any Cardy-like limit. We present explicit results for theories arising as a stack of N D 3 branes at the tip of toric Calabi-Yau cones: the conifold theory, the suspended pinch point gauge theory, the first del Pezzo theory and Y p,q quiver gauge theories. For a suitable choice of the chemical potentials of the theory we find agreement with predictions made for the same theories in the Cardy-like limit. However, for other regions of the domain of chemical potentials the superconformal index is modified and consequently the associated black hole entropy receives corrections. We work out explicitly the simple case of the conifold theory.
We find generating functions for half BPS correlators in $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 SYM theories with gauge groups Sp(2N), SO(2N + 1), and SO(2N) by computing the norms of a class of BPS coherent states. These coherent states are built from operators involving Harish-Chandra integrals. Such operators have an interpretation as localized giant gravitons in the bulk of anti-de-Sitter space. This extends the analysis of [1] to Sp(2N), SO(2N + 1), and SO(2N) gauge theories. We show that we may use ordinary Schur functions as a basis for the sector of states with no cross-caps in these theories. This is consistent with the construction of these theories as orientifold projections of an SU(2N) theory. We make note of some relations between the symmetric functions that appear in the expansion of these coherent states and symplectic Schur functions. We also comment on some connections to Schubert calculus and Gromov-Witten invariants, which suggest that the Harish-Chandra integral may be extended to such problems.
(2+1)D topological orders possess emergent symmetries given by a group $\text{Aut}(\mathcal{C})$, which consists of the braided tensor autoequivalences of the modular tensor category $\mathcal{C}$ that describes the anyons. In this paper we discuss cases where $\text{Aut}(\mathcal{C})$ has elements that neither permute anyons nor are associated to any symmetry fractionalization but are still non-trivial, which we refer to as soft symmetries. We point out that one can construct topological defects corresponding to such exotic symmetry actions by decorating with a certain class of gauged SPT states that cannot be distinguished by their torus partition function. This gives a physical interpretation to work by Davydov on soft braided tensor autoequivalences. This has a number of important implications for the classification of gapped boundaries, non-invertible spontaneous symmetry breaking, and the general classification of symmetry-enriched topological phases of matter. Here, we also demonstrate analogous phenomena in higher dimensions, such as (3+1)D gauge theory with gauge group given by the quaternion group $Q_8$.
Van der Waals potentials describing interactions between color-singlet mesons and/or baryons vanish at leading order in potential nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (pNRQCD). This result and constraints from Gauss’s law are used to prove that weakly coupled pNRQCD van der Waals potentials in generic non-Abelian gauge theories with only heavy quarks are too weak to form bound states whose color state is a product of color singlets. Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of four, five, and six quarks with equal masses provide numerical evidence that exotic color configurations are higher energy than products of color-singlet hadrons, suggesting that equal-mass fully heavy tetraquark, pentaquark, and hexaquark bound states do not exist at next-to-leading order in pNRQCD and at all orders in QCD-like theories in which all quark masses are asymptotically large. Mechanisms for generating hadron-hadron bound states are identified, which necessarily involve large quark-mass hierarchies, relativistic effects arising from the presence of sufficiently light quarks, or nonperturbative effects outside the scope of weakly coupled pNRQCD.

A spectrum of localized excitations of isolated static fermions has been discovered in several different gauge Higgs theories. In lattice numerical simulations, we show that the charged elementary particles can have the spectrum of excitations in the Higgs phase of SU(3) gauge Higgs theory, q=2 Abelian Higgs theory, Landau-Ginzburg theory, and in chiral U(1) gauge Higgs theory. Possibly these excited states of the isolated fermions can be observed in ARPES studies of conventional superconductors. Also, we consider that similar kinds of excitations could exist in other gauge Higgs theories, such as the electroweak sector of the Standard Model.
In this work, we consider XY-spin degrees of freedom on an FCC lattice, such that the system respects some subsystem global symmetry. We then gauge this global symmetry and study the corresponding $U(1)$ gauge theory on the FCC lattice. Surprisingly, this $U(1)$ gauge theory is dual to the original spin system. We also analyze a similar $\mathbb{Z}_N$ gauge theory on that lattice. All these systems are fractonic. The $U(1)$ theories are gapless and the $\mathbb{Z}_N$ theories are gapped. We analyze the continuum limits of all these systems and present free continuum Lagrangians for their low-energy physics. Our $\mathbb{Z}_2$ FCC gauge theory is the continuum limit of the well known checkerboard model of fractons. Our continuum analysis leads to a straightforward proof of the known fact that this theory is dual to two copies of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ X-cube model. We find new models and new relations between known models. The $\mathbb{Z}_N$ FCC gauge theory can be realized by coupling three copies of an anisotropic model of lineons and planons to a certain exotic $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory. Also, although for $N=2$ this model is dual to two copies of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ X-cube model, a similar statement is not true for higher $N$.
A new lattice regularization of quantum general relativity based on Ashtekar's reformulation of Hamiltonian general relativity is presented. In this form, quantum states of the gravitational field are represented within the physical Hilbert space of a Kogut-Susskind lattice gauge theory. The gauge field of the theory is a complexified SU(2) connection which is the gravitational connection for left-handed spinor fields. The physical states of the gravitational field are those which are annihilated by additional constraints which correspond to the four constraints of general relativity. Lattice versions of these constraints are constructed. Those corresponding to the three-dimensional diffeomorphism generators move states associated with Wilson loops around on the lattice. The lattice Hamiltonian constraint has a simple form, and a correspondingly simple interpretation: it is an operator which cuts and joins Wilson loops at points of intersection.
Here, we demonstrate how to construct a fully gauge-fixed lattice Hamiltonian for a pure SU(2) gauge theory. Our work extends upon previous work, where a formulation of an SU(2) lattice gauge theory was developed that is efficient to simulate at all values of the gauge coupling. That formulation utilized maximal-tree gauge, where all local gauge symmetries are fixed and a residual global gauge symmetry remains. By using the geometric picture of an SU(2) lattice gauge theory as a system of rotating rods, we demonstrate how to fix the remaining global gauge symmetry. In particular, the quantum numbers associated with total charge can be isolated by rotating between the lab and body frames using the three Euler angles. The Hilbert space in this new “sequestered” basis partitions cleanly into sectors with differing total angular momentum, which makes gauge-fixing to a particular total charge sector trivial, particularly for the charge-zero sector. In addition to this sequestered basis inheriting the property of being efficient at all values of the coupling, we show that, despite the global nature of the final gauge-fixing procedure, this Hamiltonian can be simulated using quantum resources scaling only polynomially with the lattice volume.
We study chiral operators in four-dimensional N = 2 supersymmetric gauge theories. We provide a general procedure to derive the exact relations among the vacuum expectation values of chiral operators in the Ω-background using the non-perturbative Dyson-Schwinger equations of qq-characters. We demonstrate our procedure using several examples. For pure SU(N) gauge theory and SU(N) gauge theory with 2N fundamental hypermultiplets, we verify the relations conjectured previously in the literature. We also briefly discuss the relations in SU(N) linear superconformal quiver gauge theories.
Static quark-antiquark states in QCD, at finite quark separation, have a spectrum of metastable states corresponding to string-like excitations of the gauge field. In this article I suggest that there may also exist an excitation spectrum of heavy fermions in some gauge Higgs theories deep in the Higgs phase. In this situation there are no color electric flux tubes connecting quarks with antiquarks. There may, nonetheless, exist stable excitations of the bosonic fields surrounding an isolated fermion, below the particle production threshold. I present numerical evidence indicating the existence of such excitations in an SU(3) gauge Higgs theory, with the scalar field in the fundamental representation of the gauge group.
