Variations in the HCN/HNC abundance ratio in the Orion molecular cloud

Observations of the rare isotopes of HCN and HNC have been used to determine the relative abundance of these two chemical isomers along the central ridge of the Orion molecular cloud. The abundance ratio HCN/HNC decreases by more than an order of magnitude from the relatively warm plateau and hot core sources toward the KL nebula to the colder, more quiescent clouds to the north and south. Even in the cooler regions, however, the ratio is an order of magnitude larger than that found in previous investigations of cold dark clouds. The kinetic temperature in the regions studied is determined from new observations of methylacetylene (CH3CCH), together with other recent estimates of the gas temperature near KL. The results suggest that the warmer portions of the cloud are dominated by different chemical pathways that those in the general instellar cloud material.

Kinetic analysis of the template effect in ribooligoguanylate elongation

The paper presents kinetic studies on the reaction of elongation of the 3-prime-5-prime-linked ribooligoguanylates with guanosine 5-prime-phospho-2-methylimidazolide (2-MelmpG) in the presence or absence of a complementary template, the polycytidylic acid. In the absence of poly(C), the reaction leads to three isomeric oligomers that are elongated by one monomer unit: the 3-prime-5-prime linked, the 2-prime-5-prime linked, and the pyrophosphate, formed in a ratio of 1:2:5. In the presence of the template, the reaction is 20-fold faster and yields products (n + 1), (n + 2), (n + 3), etc., as long as 2-MelmpG is available. The formation of the natural, 3-prime-5-prime-linked isomer, is enhanced selectively by 140-fold at 37 C, and its relative yield increases with decreasing temperature.

Novel polyamide-imines

An account is given of tough, thermally stable linear polyimides containing amide linkages that recommend themselves for use in high temperature-resistant films and coatings as well as matrix resins for graphite-reinforced structures. Four such polymers were synthesized from unsubstituted amide diamines, and two others from N-substituted amide diamines. High inherent viscosities and glass transition temperatures were obtained. The films exhibit good resistance to organic solvents. Films of the 4,4-prime-isomer polyamide-imide yielded exceptionally high modulus and toughness during impact evaluation.

Soluble aromatic polyimides for film and coating applications

The effect of changing isomeric points of attachment of phenoxy units in the diamine portion of several all-aromatic polyimide systems on the solubility of these materials were investigated. It was found that solubility could be enhanced by the presence of meta and ortho isomer links in the diamine portion of the molecule. The soluble phenoxy-linked polyimides yield tough flexible colorless to pale-yellow transparent films from solutions of chlorinated solvents, with high potential for use in electronic applications.

Chemistry of chlorinated species in the Antarctic stratosphere

The chemistry of Cl sub 2 O sub 2, the chlorine monoxide dimer, has been further investigated in order to better asses its potential role in catalytic ozone destruction cycles. The dimer has been generated in a flow system, in the 200 to 250 K temperature range, by using ozone and chlorine atoms as ClO precursors. The Cl-atoms are produced by a microwave discharge of either Cl sub 2, or of F sub 2 with subsequent addition of HCl. With this later scheme the dimer can be generated in the absence of Cl sub 2. The Fourier transform infrared spectra of the products clearly indicates the presence of two isomers, in agreement with earlier results (J. Phys. Shen., 91, 433, 1987). None of the observed IR bands can be attributed to a ClO-OClO adduct, since they all appear in the absence of any detectable amount of OCl. It is likely that the particles in the polar stratospheric clouds will have a relatively dilute nitric acid outer layer, even if the core is the nitric acid monohydrate, since the particles are in equilibrium with the ambient water vapor, which is present at levels of a few parts per million.

Simulation studies for surfaces and materials strength

During this six month period of the Simulation Studies for Surfaces and Materials Strength program investigations were carried out in two general areas: (1) Energy barriers and structural transitions between isomers of small Al clusters were investigated. In this study an empirical potential function which was parametrized based on accurate first principle results was employed; (2) A comparative study was conducted to investigate the applicability of most commonly employed model potential functions in calculating various bulk, surface and small cluster properties.

Synthesis and characterization of BTDA-based polyamide-imides

Several thermally stable tough linear polyimides containing amide linkages were synthesized which have application as matrix resins in graphite reinforced structures. Isomers of diaminobenzanilide were reacted with 3,3-prime,4,4-prime-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride, and then thermally converted to the polyamide-imide. Polymers prepared from unsubstituted amide diamines and from N-substituted amide diamines exhibited high inherent viscosities and glass transition temperatures. The mechanical properties of these polymers were found to be superior to those of LARC-TPI.

Perovskite-type oxides - Oxygen electrocatalysis and bulk structure

Perovskite type oxides were considered for use as oxygen reduction and generation electrocatalysts in alkaline electrolytes. Perovskite stability and electrocatalytic activity are studied along with possible relationships of the latter with the bulk solid state properties. A series of compounds of the type LaFe(x)Ni1(-x)O3 was used as a model system to gain information on the possible relationships between surface catalytic activity and bulk structure. Hydrogen peroxide decomposition rate constants were measured for these compounds. Ex situ Mossbauer effect spectroscopy (MES), and magnetic susceptibility measurements were used to study the solid state properties. X ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to examine the surface. MES has indicated the presence of a paramagnetic to magnetically ordered phase transition for values of x between 0.4 and 0.5. A correlation was found between the values of the MES isomer shift and the catalytic activity for peroxide decomposition. Thus, the catalytic activity can be correlated to the d-electron density for the transition metal cations.

Polyamide-Imides Made From BTDA

New synthesis results in improved class of tough, thermally stable polyimides containing amide linkages. Linear, aromatic, polyimide/amides synthesized from isomers of DABA with 3, 3', 4, 4'- BTDA. Mechanical properties better than those of LARC-TPI polyimide. Potentially useful as matrix resins in graphite-reinforced structures, and as fibers or coating films withstanding high temperatures.

Oligomerizations of deoxyadenosine bis-phosphates and of their 3-prime-5-prime, 3-prime-3-prime, and 5-prime-5-prime dimers - Effects of a pyrophosphate-linked, poly(T) analog

The effect of a 3-prime-5-prime pyrophosphate-linked oligomer of pTp on oligomerizations of pdAp and of its 3-prime-5-prime, 3-prime-3-prime, and 5-prime-5-prime dimers was investigated, using HPLC to separate the reaction mixtures; peak detection was by absorbance monitoring at 254 nm. It was expected that the dimers would form stable complexes with the template, with the degree of stability depending upon the internal linkage of each dimer. It was found that, although the isomers differ substantially in their oligomerization behavior in the absence of template, the analog-template catalyzes the oligomerization to about the same extent in all three cases.

An efficient formulation and implementation of the analytic energy gradient method to the single and double excitation coupled-cluster wave function - Application to Cl2O2

The analytic energy gradient for the single and double excitation coupled-cluster (CCSD) wave function has been reformulated and implemented in a new set of programs. The reformulated set of gradient equations have a smaller computational cost than any previously published. The iterative solution of the linear equations and the construction of the effective density matrices are fully vectorized, being based on matrix multiplications. The new method has been used to investigate the Cl2O2 molecule, which has recently been postulated as an important intermediate in the destruction of ozone in the stratosphere. In addition to reporting computational timings, the CCSD equilibrium geometries, harmonic vibrational frequencies, infrared intensities, and relative energetics of three isomers of Cl2O2 are presented.

The structure and energetics of the HCN-HNC transition state

The optimum geometries and quadratic force constants of HCN, HNC and the transition state connecting them have been determined at the single- and double-excitation coupled-cluster (CCSD) and CCSD(T) levels of theory. Energy differences were evaluated using the CCSD and CCSD(T) methods in conjunction with large atomic natural orbital basis sets containing g-type basis functions on the heavy atoms and f-type functions on hydrogen. The most reliable structure obtained for the transition state has bond distances of 1.194, 1.188, and 1.389 A for r(CN), r(CH), and r(NH), respectively. Including a correction for zero-point vibrational energies, the transition state is predicted to be 44.6 + or - 1.0 kcal/mol above the HCN isomer, while HNC is predicted to be 14.4 + or - 1.0 kcal/mol above HCN. The latter value is in excellent agreement with the most recent experimental determination (14.8 + or - 2.0 kcal/mol).

Synthesis and characterization of polyamide-imides

The synthesis and characterization of polyamide-imides (PAI) derived from four different dianhydrides and three isomers of diaminobenzanilide are discussed with emphasis on the effect of combining an amide linkage in the diamine portion with other bridging groups in the dianhydride portion of the polymer backbone. It is noted that all of the amide-imide polymers exhibit high-glass transition temperatures, high thermooxidative stability, and a relatively good solvent resistance. These aromatic PAIs are characterized by high thermal stability due to chain stiffness, crystallinity, and intermolecular hydrogen bonding, and are considered to be good candidates as high-temperature films, coatings, and fibers for aerospace applications.

Structure-property study of keto-ether polyimides

As part of an on-going effort to develop an understanding of how changes in the chemical structure affect polymer properties, an empirical study was performed on polyimides containing only ether and/or carbonyl connecting groups in the polymer backbone. During the past two decades the structure-property relationships in linear aromatic polyimides have been extensively investigated. More recently, work has been performed to study the effect of isomeric attachment of keto-ether polyimides on properties such as glass transition temperature and solubility. However, little work has been reported on the relation of polyimide structure to mechanical properties. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of structural changes in the backbone of keto-ether polyimides on their mechanical properties, specifically, unoriented thin film tensile properties. This study was conducted in two stages. The purpose of the initial stage was to examine the physical and mechanical properties of a representative group (four) of polyimide systems to determine the optimum solvent and cure cycle requirements. These optimum conditions were then utilized in the second stage to prepare films of keto-ether polyimides which were evaluated for mechanical and physical properties. All of the polyimides were prepared using isomers of oxydianiline (ODA) and diaminobenzophenone (DABP) in combination with 3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) and 4,4'-oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA).

Evaluated rate constants for selected HCFC's and HFC's with OH and O((sup)1D)

The chemistry of HCFC's and HFC's in the troposphere is controlled by reactions with OH in which a hydrogen atom is abstracted from the halocarbon to form water and a halo-alkyl radical. The halo-alkyl radical subsequently reacts with molecular oxygen to form a peroxy radical. The reactions of HCFC's and HFC's with O(exp1D) atoms are unimportant in the troposphere, but may be important in producing active chlorine of OH in the stratosphere. Here, the rate constants for the reactions of OH and O(exp1D) with many HFC's and HCFC's are evaluated. Recommendations are given for the five HCFC's and three HFC's specified by AFEAS as primary alternatives as well as for all other isomers of C1 and C2 HCFC's and HFC's where rate data exist. In addition, recommendations are included for CH3CCl3, CH2Cl2, and CH4.

FONO - A difficult case for theory and experiment

High levels of ab initio theory are used to investigate the equilibrium structures, vibrational spectra, and relative energetics of FNO2, cis-FONO, and trans-FONO isomers. FNO2 is determined to be 36.9 +/- 2.5 kcal/mol (0 K) more stable than cis-FONO, which is more stable than trans-FONO by 2.5 +/- 1.0 kcal/mol (0 K). The molecular structure of cis-FONO is shown to have typical F-O and central O-N single bond distances, indicating that cis-FONO has a structure analogous to HONO. The computed vibrational spectrum of cis-FONO is shown to be consistent with IR matrix isolation experiments, including isotopic shifts. The experimentally deduced structure of FONO is shown to be incorrect because one of the vibrational bands included in the normal coordinate analysis is either a combination band or an overtone.
