Stepped hosting capacity for maximizing distributed solar on Guam

Guam Power Authority (GPA) sought national lab assistance through the Energy Technology Innovations Partnership Project as part of the second cohort of applicants (i.e. the program’s second year). GPA is leading an effort to evolve the island’s energy generation portfolio to 50% renewable by 2030, and 100% renewable by 2040. These goals for renewable penetration are a function of public law and GPA is legally required to comply, though GPA’s timeline is more aggressive by five years in each case than the law requires.

Technology & Design Innovations to Maximize the Reduction Effect on DCFC Unit Cost Economics (Max‐REDUCE)

With the high cost and reliability issues of DCFC infrastructure the project specifically addressed the needs of innovating on the AC to DC power conversion. We proved the integration of a new power module into existing charger units, and that theoretical educational work on single stage energy conversion is commercially viable, and a reduced cost compared to existing methods. Our A sample shown 3 PH 480VAC 60hz to 350VDC 8.5kW power transfer, and our software and simulation proved efficiency greater than 97% from 20kW to > 60kW, over the DC output voltage range 200 – 1200V. The project was stopped before we could implement B sample and execute full power testing, validation and integration into a demonstration charger (budget period 3).

MATHUSLA: An External Long-Lived Particle Detector to Maximize the Discovery Potential of the HL-LHC

We present the current status of the MATHUSLA (MAssive Timing Hodoscope for Ultra-Stable neutraL pArticles) long-lived particle (LLP) detector at the HL-LHC, covering the design, fabrication and installation at CERN Point 5. MATHUSLA40 is a 40 m-scale detector with an air-filled decay volume that is instrumented with scintillator tracking detectors, to be located near CMS. Its large size, close proximity to the CMS interaction point and about 100 m of rock shielding from LHC backgrounds allows it to detect LLP production rates and lifetimes that are one to two orders of magnitude beyond the ultimate reach of the LHC main detectors. This provides unique sensitivity to many LLP signals that are highly theoretically motivated, due to their connection to the hierarchy problem, the nature of dark matter, and baryogenesis. Data taking is projected to commence with the start of HL-LHC operations. We summarize the new 40m design for the detector that was recently presented in the MATHUSLA Conceptual Design Report, alongside new realistic background and signal simulations that demonstrate high efficiency for the main target LLP signals in a background-free HL-LHC search. We argue that MATHUSLA's uniquely robust expansion of the HL-LHC physics reach is a crucial ingredient in CERN's mission to search for new physics and characterize the Higgs boson with precision.

Maximization of the region of exponential absolute stability.

The problem of selecting a regulator vector which yields the largest estimate of the region of exponential absolute stability is considered. Reformulation of an extended version of the Popov frequency condition in terms of a nonnegative polynomial gives the desired algorithm in mathematical programming format.

Rank-k Maximal Statistics for Divergence and Probability of Misclassification

A technique is developed for selecting from n-channel multispectral data some k combinations of the n-channels upon which to base a given classification technique so that some measure of the loss of the ability to distinguish between classes, using the compressed k-dimensional data, is minimized. Information loss in compressing the n-channel data to k channels is taken to be the difference in the average interclass divergences (or probability of misclassification) in n-space and in k-space.

Maximizing profits in international technology transfer

Maximum profit can be introduced into international technology transfer by observing the following: (1) ethical and open dealing between the parties; (2) maximum knowledge of all facts concerning the technology, the use of the technology, the market, competition, prices, and alternatives; (3) ability to coordinate exports, service, support activities, licensing and cross licensing; and (4) knowledgeable people which put these factors together.

Finite length filters with maximally confined spectral power

The problem of finding a function which, in addition to being zero outside a specified range in x-space, has its spectral power well confined to a certain range in k-space is solved numerically. Properties of the solutions are also discussed.

Personnel techniques necessary to maximize bio-barrier integrity at a Martian receiving laboratory

The planning of biological isolation measures for the Mars Surface Sample Return Mission is discussed in terms of personnel and organizational management. Deficiencies in past operation of the Lunar Receiving Laborator are analyzed. It was found that the failure to clearly define relationship among the government agencies involved and to effectively integrate their objectives and responsibilities was a major cause of Laboratory deficiencies. Possible solutions to these problems are presented for application to future missions.

Scanning Kirkpatrick-Baez X-ray telescope to maximize effective area and eliminate spurious images - Design

We consider the design of a Kirkpatrick-Baez grazing-incidence X-ray telescope to be used in a scan of the sky and analyze the distribution of both properly reflected rays and spurious images over the field of view. To obtain maximum effective area over the field of view, it is necessary to increase the spacing between plates for a scanning telescope as compared to a pointing telescope. Spurious images are necessarily present in this type of lens, but they can be eliminated from the field of view by adding properly located baffles or collimators. Results of a computer design are presented.

Structural optimization with flutter speed constraints using maximized step size

A procedure is presented for the minimization of structural mass while satisfying flutter speed constraints. The procedure differs from other optimization methods in that the flutter speed is exactly satisfied at each resizing step, and the step size is determined by a direct minimization of the objective function (mass) for each set of flutter derivatives calculated. In conjunction with this method, a new move vector is suggested which results in a very efficient resizing procedure.
