Ultracoherent superconducting cavity-based multiqudit platform with error-resilient control

Superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities offer a promising platform for quantum computing due to their long coherence times, yet integrating nonlinear elements like transmons for control often introduces additional loss. We report a multimode quantum system based on a 2-cell elliptical-shaped SRF cavity, comprising two cavity modes weakly coupled to an ancillary transmon circuit, designed to preserve coherence while enabling efficient control of the cavity modes. We mitigate the detrimental effects of the transmon decoherence through careful design optimization that reduces transmon-cavity couplings and participation in the dielectric substrate and lossy interfaces, to achieve single-photon lifetimes of 20.6 ms and 15.6 ms for the two modes, and a pure dephasing time exceeding 40 ms. This marks an order-of-magnitude improvement over prior 3D multimode memories. Leveraging sideband interactions and novel error-resilient protocols, including measurement-based correction and post-selection, we achieve high-fidelity control over quantum states. This enables the preparation of Fock states up to N = 20 with fidelities exceeding 95%, the highest reported to date to the authors' knowledge, as well as two-mode entanglement with an estimated coherence-limited fidelities of 99.9% after post-selection. These results establish our platform as a robust foundation for quantum information processing, allowing for future extensions to high-dimensional qudit encodings.

Spin-triplet superconductivity from intervalley Goldstone modes in magic-angle graphene

Here, we consider magic-angle graphene in the doping regime around charge neutrality, and we study the connection between a recently proposed intervalley coherent insulator at zero doping and the neighboring superconducting domes. The magic-angle graphene continuum model has an emergent U(1) valley-charge conservation symmetry and an emergent SU(2) symmetry corresponding to opposite spin rotations in the two valleys. The intervalley coherent insulator spontaneously breaks both these emergent symmetries, and as a result has four Goldstone modes that couple to doped charge carriers. We derive the effective interaction mediated by the Goldstone modes, and we study its role in electron pair formation. The SU(2) Goldstone modes generate a ferromagnetic interaction, which is attractive in spin-triplet pairing channels and repulsive in spin-singlet channels. From a weak-coupling BCS calculation, we find the leading superconducting instability in the p-wave channel.

Observations of modal coupling due to bolted joints in an experimental benchmark structure

The goal of this paper is to present a set of measurements from a benchmark structure containing two bolted joints to support future efforts to predict the damping due to the joints and to model nonlinear coupling between the first two elastic modes. Bolted joints introduce nonlinearities in structures, typically causing a softening in the natural frequency and an increase in damping because of frictional slip between the contact interfaces within the joint. These nonlinearities pose significant challenges when characterizing the response of the structure under a large range of load amplitudes, especially when the modal responses become coupled, causing the effective damping and natural frequency to not only depend on the excitation amplitude of the targeted mode, but also the relative amplitudes of other modes. In this work, two nominally identical benchmark structures, known in some prior works as the S4 beam, are tested to characterize their nonlinear properties for the first two elastic modes. Detailed surface measurements are presented and validated through finite element analysis and reveal distinct contact interactions between the two sets of beams. The free-free test structures are excited with an impact hammer and the transient response is analyzed to extract the damping and frequency backbone curves. A range of impact amplitudes and drive points are used to isolate a single mode or to excite both modes simultaneously. Differences in the nonlinear response correlate with the relative strength of the modes that are excited, allowing one to characterize mode coupling. Each of the beams shows different nonlinear properties for each mode, which is attributed to the different contact pressure distributions between the parts, although the mode coupling relationship is found to be consistent between the two. Lastly, the test data key finding are presented in this paper and the supporting data is available on a public repository for interested researchers.

Photonic Crystal Waveguides for >90% Light Trapping Efficiency in Luminescent Solar Concentrators

Luminescent solar concentrators are currently limited in their potential concentration factor and solar conversion efficiency by the inherent escape cone losses present in conventional planar dielectric waveguides. Here, we demonstrate that photonic crystal slab waveguides tailored for luminescent solar concentrator applications can exhibit >90% light trapping efficiency. This is achieved by use of quantum dot luminophores embedded within the waveguide that absorb light at photon energies corresponding to photonic crystal leaky modes that couple to incoming sunlight. The luminophores then emit at lower photon energies into photonic crystal bound modes that enable highly efficient light trapping in slab waveguides of wavelength-scale thickness. Photonic crystal waveguides thus nearly eliminate escape cone losses, and overcome the performance limitations of previously proposed wavelength-selective dielectric multilayer filters. We describe designs for hole-array and rod-array photonic crystals comprised of hydrogenated amorphous silicon carbide using CdSe/CdS quantum dots. Our analysis suggests that photonic crystal waveguide luminescent solar concentrators using these materials these can achieve light trapping efficiency above 92% and a concentration factor as high as 100.

Quantum reservoir computing implementation on coherently coupled quantum oscillators

Quantum reservoir computing is a promising approach for quantum neural networks, capable of solving hard learning tasks on both classical and quantum input data. However, current approaches with qubits suffer from limited connectivity. We propose an implementation for quantum reservoir that obtains a large number of densely connected neurons by using parametrically coupled quantum oscillators instead of physically coupled qubits. We analyze a specific hardware implementation based on superconducting circuits: with just two coupled quantum oscillators, we create a quantum reservoir comprising up to 81 neurons. We obtain state-of-the-art accuracy of 99% on benchmark tasks that otherwise require at least 24 classical oscillators to be solved. Our results give the coupling and dissipation requirements in the system and show how they affect the performance of the quantum reservoir. Beyond quantum reservoir computing, the use of parametrically coupled bosonic modes holds promise for realizing large quantum neural network architectures, with billions of neurons implemented with only 10 coupled quantum oscillators.

Chiral microwave nonreciprocity demonstrated via Rayleigh and Sezawa modes supported in an Al 0.58 ⁢Sc 0.42 ⁢N/4⁢H–Si⁢C platform

Chirality plays a crucial role in the helicity mismatch between surface acoustic waves and magnetic spin waves, leading to nonreciprocal transmission of acoustic power for coupled magnetoacoustic modes. Acoustic modes with both longitudinal and shear strain exhibit elliptical particle displacements, making them chiral, and different acoustic modes can exhibit different helicities of this elliptical particle displacement. Here, we study chiral acoustic modes with different helicities supported on the same piezoelectric platform and their interaction with magnetic spin waves. Our study demonstrates that the nonreciprocal transmission of acoustic power is driven by the helicity mismatch effect and, specifically, that the handedness of the nonreciprocity is based on whether the surface acoustic wave has retrograde (Rayleigh mode) or prograde (Sezawa mode) elliptical particle displacement with respect to the propagation direction. We found the transmission nonreciprocity to be significant, with 7.3 dB/mm for the retrograde particle displacement (Rayleigh mode at 2.358 GHz) and 3.3 dB/mm for prograde particle displacement (Sezawa mode at 3.112 GHz). Furthermore, this work highlights that piezoelectric platforms can be engineered to support acoustic modes with opposite helicities to enable frequency-selective nonreciprocal radiofrequency and microwave components, such as isolators and circulators, through coupled acoustic spin wave interactions.

Influence of Electronic Polarization on the Spectral Density

Accurate spectral densities are necessary for computing realistic exciton dynamics and nonlinear optical spectra of chromophores in condensed-phase environments, including multichromophore pigment–protein systems. However, due to the significant computational cost of computing spectral densities from first principles, requiring many thousands of excited-state calculations, most simulations of realistic systems rely on treating the environment as fixed-point charges. In this work, using a number of representative systems ranging from solvated chromophores to the photoactive yellow protein (PYP), we demonstrate that the quantum mechanical (QM) electronic polarization of the environment is key to obtaining accurate spectral densities and line shapes within the cumulant framework. We show that the QM environment can enhance or depress the coupling of fast chromophore degrees of freedom to the energy gap, altering the electronic–vibrational coupling and the resulting vibronic progressions in the absorption spectrum. In analyzing the physical origin of peaks in the spectral density, we identify vibrational modes that couple the electron and the hole as being particularly sensitive to the QM screening of the environment. For PYP, we reveal the need for careful determination of the appropriate QM region to obtain reliable spectral densities. Our findings suggest that the QM polarization of the environment can be crucial not just for excitation energies but also for electronic–vibrational coupling in complex systems with implications for the correct modeling of linear and nonlinear optical spectroscopy in the condensed phase as well as energy transfer in pigment–protein complexes.
