Materials and processes laboratory composite materials characterization task, part 1. Damage tolerance

A test run was performed on IM6/3501-6 carbon-epoxy in which the material was processed, machined into specimens, and tested for damage tolerance capabilities. Nondestructive test data played a major role in this element of composite characterization. A time chart was produced showing the time the composite material spent within each Branch or Division in order to identify those areas which produce a long turnaround time. Instrumented drop weight testing was performed on the specimens with nondestructive evaluation being performed before and after the impacts. Destructive testing in the form of cross-sectional photomicrography and compression-after-impact testing were used. Results show that the processing and machining steps needed to be performed more rapidly if data on composite material is to be collected within a reasonable timeframe. The results of the damage tolerance testing showed that IM6/3501-6 is a brittle material that is very susceptible to impact damage.

Nondestructive sonic testing of adhesive-bonded composites

System detects and determines the location, depth, and areas of crushed core or of breaks in bonding between core and adhesive, adhesive and face sheet, or face sheet and external doubler. It is applicable to honeycomb panels of metal and/or plastics and to metal-to-metal laminates.

Nondestructive spot tests allow rapid identification of metals

Ordered qualitative test sequence, presented in flow chart form, permits identification of all common metallurgical elements and many high-temperature, stainless, high and low carbon, and tool steels within about 30 minutes. Identification is made from colors or specific reactions produced by the addition of standard chemical reagents.

Nondestructive leak testing

Method provides opportunity to effect repairs without compromising integrity of enclosed circuitry or mechanism by loss of atmosphere or by ingestion of foreign matter or gas. It is possible to detect leaks in modules which are sealed while fully evacuated, partially evacuated, or containing some form of gas.

Nondestructive spot test method for magnesium and magnesium alloys

A method for spot test identification of magnesium and various magnesium alloys commonly used in aerospace applications is described. The spot test identification involves color codes obtained when several drops of 3 M hydrochloric acid are placed on the surface to be tested. After approximately thirty seconds, two drops of this reacted acid is transferred to each of two depressions in a spot plate for additions of other chemicals with subsequent color changes indicating magnesium or its alloy.

Smart structures research program at Virginia Tech

A review of the smart structures and avionics research and teaching program that started in 1979 at Virginia Tech is described. Current smart structures research include major efforts in the development of embedded and attached optical fiber and acoustic fiber sensors for cure monitoring, in-service lifetime structural testing, nondestructive evaluation, and impact and damage detection and analysis; of gradual material degradation; sensor signal multiplexing, processing and data handling to achieve near real-time distributed structural analysis; and the integration of embedded sensors, actuators and control electronics to achieve controlled structural response. Special campus facilities used for this work include an optical fiber fabrication facility, an autoclave for composite structure fabrication and curing, and laboratories for optical fiber sensor development, materials response and nondestructive evaluation, structural control testing and computer engineering.

Nondestructive evaluation of regeneratively cooled thrust chambers for rocket engines

Review of a development program for nondestructive tests applicable to hardware with electroformed nickel bonds. The four steps of the program include the selection of some most promising nondestructive evaluation methods out of existing methods, the fabrication of test panels for simulation of cooled thrust chamber walls with bonds of various integrities, the evaluation of the test panels by personnel without previous knowledge of the planned bond integrity, and the verification of actual bond strength in the test panels by destructive tests. Ultrasonics, acoustic emission and holography are evaluated in nondestructive testing applications.

Heat shield characterization: Outer planet atmospheric entry probe

A full scale carbon phenolic heat shield was fabricated for the Outer Planet Probe in order to demonstrate the feasibility of molding large carbon phenolic parts with a new fabrication processing method (multistep). The sphere-cone heat shield was molded as an integral unit with the nose cap plies configured into a double inverse chevron shape to achieve the desired ply orientation. The fabrication activity was successful and the feasibility of the multistep processing technology was established. Delaminations or unbonded plies were visible on the heat shield and resulted from excessive loss of resin and lack of sufficient pressure applied on the part during the curing cycle. A comprehensive heat shield characterization test program was conducted, including: nondestructive tests with the full scale heat shield and thermal and mechanical property tests with small test specimen.
