Transient heat transfer from shrinking LOX-drop

In order to achieve prescribed experimental conditions in wind tunnels, the nitrogen-oxygen mixture is enriched by injection of liquid oxygen (LOX) upstream of methane burners. The objective of the study is to determine the LOX drop evaporation rate, which is dominated by heat transfer from the air stream (mass transfer mechanism can be later coupled with the solution from the present work). Since the concentration of drops in the surrounding gas is quite high, the concept of infinite medium cannot be utilized. Drop evaporation, as part of system's mass balance, is an important source-term in the finite-difference 2/3-dimensional network terms of laboratory-system (Eulerian) coordinates, while individual drop behavior, including its thermal history, is analyzed in Lagrangian coordinates.

Carbon-Nanotube-Bridging Strategy for Integrating Single Fe Atoms and NiCo Nanoparticles in a Bifunctional Oxygen Electrocatalyst toward High-Efficiency and Long-Life Rechargeable Zinc–Air Batteries

The development of highly efficient and robust bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction (ORR) and evolution reactions (OER) is the key issue for realizing high-performance and long-life rechargeable zinc–air batteries (ZABs). However, it is still a great challenge to integrate independent ORR and OER sites in a catalyst with high activity. Here, a carbon nanotube-bridging strategy is proposed to synthesize such a bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst enriched with highly active single-atom Fe sites for the ORR and high-performance nanosized NiCo hydroxides for the OER. Consequently, the developed catalyst shows a small overpotential difference of 0.686 V. When used as an oxygen electrode catalyst, the corresponding ZAB exhibits a large power density of 219.5 mW cm ₋2 , a small charge–discharge voltage gap of 0.72 V at 10 mA cm ₋2 , and outstanding discharge–charge durability without attenuation after more than 700 cycles. This work proposes a new idea to realize multifunctional catalysts and drives the practical application of ZABs.

The origin and formation of oxygen inclusions in austenitic stainless steels manufactured by laser powder bed fusion

The origins of nano-scale oxide inclusions in 316L austenitic stainless steel (SS) manufactured by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) was investigated by quantifying the possible intrusion pathways of oxygen contained in the precursor powder, extraneous oxygen from the process environment during laser processing, and moisture contamination during powder handling and storage. When processing the fresh, as-received powder in a wellcontrolled environment, the oxide inclusions contained in the precursor powder were the primary contributors to the formation of nano-scale oxides in the final additive manufactured (AM) product. These oxide inclusions were found to be enriched with oxygen getter elements like Si and Mn. By controlling the extraneous oxygen level in the process environment, the oxygen level in AM produced parts was found to increase with the extraneous oxygen level. The intrusion pathway of this extra oxygen was found to be dominated by the incorporation of spatter particles into the build during processing. Moisture induced oxidation during powder storage was also found to result in a higher oxide density in the AM produced parts. SS 316L powder free of Si and Mn oxygen getters was processed in a well-controlled environment and resulted in a similar level of oxygen intrusion. Finally, microhardness testing indicated that the oxide volume fraction increase from extraneous oxygen did not influence hardness values. However, a marked decrease in hardness was found for the humidified and Si-Mn free AM processed parts.

Defect–Concentration–Mediated T–Nb 2 O 5 Anodes for Durable and Fast–Charging Li–Ion Batteries

Metastable orthorhombic niobium pentoxide (T-Nb 2 O 5 ) is a promising anode to fulfill the requirements for high-rate Li-ion batteries (LIBs). Stoichiometric T-Nb 2 O 5 is plagued by low electric conductivity and particle pulverization after repeated charge/discharge processes. In this work, oxygen vacancies are implanted into T-Nb 2 O 5 particles via acid immersion of Nb 2 O 5 ·nH 2 O with the formation of Lewis acid sites. The multiple characterizations and simulations reveal the lengthening of Nb–O bonds, and the transformation from NbO 7 pentagonal bipyramids and NbO 6 tetragonal bipyramids in T-Nb 2 O 5–x . The enrichment of oxygen vacancies endows T-Nb 2 O 5–x with higher electric conductivity, better electrochemical kinetics, larger pseudocapacitive contribution. O-doped graphitic C 3 N 4 is creatively proposed as a trace oxygen pump to repair excessive oxygen vacancies, and it also serves as a sacrifice template for Nb 2 O 5–x growth to construct a porous and monolithic electrode network. Defect-modulated Nb 2 O 5–x displays extraordinary cycling stability (164 mAh g –1 at 5 C after 1100 cycles), high capacity retention (104 mAh g –1 ) at an ultrahigh rate (25 C), and large areal capacity (0.74 mAh cm –2 ) under high mass loading (4 mg cm –2 ). The practical prospect is proved by Nb 2 O 5–x /LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 full cells with high average platform (2.12 V) and high specific capacity (229 mAh g –1 ). Finally, the oxygen-defect modulation strategy on oxide anodes provides an alternative solution to fast-charging and durable LIBs.

Understanding Oxide–Metal Interactions During Hot Isostatic Pressing to Diffusion Bond Aluminum Alloy 6061 Plates

The interaction between Mg, Si, and Al 2 O 3 during hot isostatic pressing diffusion bonding of aluminum alloy 6061 (AA6061) plates was investigated through thermodynamic calculations and experimental microstructural characterization. Thermodynamic calculations as functions of temperature, pressure, and composition revealed that the interaction among Mg, Si, and Al 2 O 3 yields Mg 2 Si and either MgO + Al or MgAl 2 O 4 + Al, facilitating the reduction of Al 2 O 3 and allowing Al/Al metallic bonds to form. Total pressure variation had a negligible influence on the oxygen partial pressure, and consequently, the reaction product formation. Oxygen partial pressure variation as a function of temperature and initial amount of Al 2 O 3 determined the formation of either MgO or MgAl 2 O 4 . Experimental Hot Isostatic Pressure (HIP) bonding at 723 K and 833 K under a constant pressure of 1017 atm documented the cooling rate-dependent formation of β–Mg 2 Si precipitates. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging and selected area electron diffraction patterns verified the formation of β–Mg 2 Si and MgO at the interface but did not detect MgAl 2 O 4 . In conclusion, findings from this study clarify the role of thermochemical interactions in oxide disruption and bonding mechanisms during HIP diffusion bonding of AA6061 and provide guidance for optimizing joining processes for monolithic nuclear fuel assemblies.

Polybenzimidazole-derived carbon molecular sieve hollow fiber membranes with tailored oxygen selective transport

Polymer membrane carbonization is a promising strategy to obtain carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membrane materials with tailorable cavity size distributions for high gas selectivities beyond that attained from traditional polymer membrane materials. Despite their already demonstrated exceptional separation performance characteristics for several gas separation applications (e.g. CO 2 /CH 4 and H 2 /CO 2 ), further development of CMS membranes having high O 2 /N 2 perm-selectivity for energy-efficient high-purity O 2 production has proven challenging. Herein, we explore CMS hollow fiber membranes (HFMs) derived from highly rigid and tightly-packed polybenzimidazole (PBI) materials. Nearly defect-free PBI-derived CMS HFMs were fabricated and evaluated for O 2 /N 2 separation performance for the first time. The micro-structural and O 2 selective gas separation characteristics of PBI-CMS HFMs pyrolyzed at different pyrolysis conditions were intensively studied. With rigorous carbonization protocol optimization, we obtained highly O 2 permselective PBI-CMS HFMs having O 2 /N 2 selectivities approaching 14, enabling high purity O 2 production. The PBI-CMS HFM O 2 /N 2 separation performance dependence on operating conditions (e.g. temperature and feed pressure) are reported.

Erosion of high-Z refractory coatings for helicon plasma source window

Proto-MPEX (Materials Plasma Exposure eXperiment), a linear plasma device (LPD), using a high power radio frequency (RF) (⩾100 kW, 13.56 MHz) helicon plasma source, has suffered RF sheath-induced window erosion. The sputtered impurities from the window surface transport toward the downstream target affecting plasma-material interaction studies. The rectified sheath voltage formed was high enough to cause window erosion by light ions due to its low-Z components (e.g. Si 3 N 4 and AlN). Hence, we are proposing impurity mitigation strategies, which involve the application of a Faraday screen to lower the rectified sheath voltage and the application of high-Z refractory coatings on the existing window plasma-facing surface. In this work, we report the erosion of two different coatings, i.e., tantalum oxide (Ta 2 O 5 ) and hafnium oxide (HfO 2 ) on a silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4 ) window material under conditions of low-energy deuterium (D) ion impact, well below the Ta 2 O 5 sputtering energy threshold (i.e. 250 eV). The test samples were RF-biased and exposed to a high D-ion fluence (∼10 26 m −2 ) in Plasma Interaction with Surface Component Experimental Station (PISCES-A) LPD. The experimentally measured sputtering yields of the high-Z refractory coatings below the sputtering energy threshold of Ta 2 O 5 indicate an increased erosion due to the plasma impurities, especially due to oxygen. Improving the vacuum level could reduce the oxygen impurities and increase the lifespan of the coated helicon window for plasma operation. Post-surface analysis indicates no preferential erosion of oxygen or enrichment of the high-Z surface component. This is likely due to an effective energy transfer from the impurity ion for sputtering of the high-Z component in the coating. With the reduced rectified sheath voltage at the window surface and improved vacuum conditions, the proposed high-Z refractory coatings offer a promising solution for reducing window erosion in future MPEX plasma operations at ORNL.

Infrared spectra of group III A metal oxides

The measurement of infrared frequencies of metal-oxygen species which could be formed in the matrix and to investigate with an oxygen-18 enrichment study the controversy on the vibrational assignments for the suboxide. Several new molecules, Al3O2, Ga3O, In3O, In4O2, IntaO, IntaO2, and In2WO4, were found by mass spectrometric sampling to exist in extremely minor concentrations in the vapor phase. The latter three species were formed by reaction with the crucible materials and were unimportant for an infrared analysis. The infrared spectroscopic measurements were obtained by the matrix isolation technique of molecular beam sampling. The MO2 species were formed by direct reaction between metal and O2 in the matrix. A C2v structure and an O-M-O bond angle near 40 deg was favored for these molecules by analogy with a similar investigation of the alkali metals. The vibrational frequencies which were determined are given.

Measurements of Line Positions and Strengths of HD O-18 and D2 O-18 in the 2500-4280 cm(exp -1) Region

Measurements of line positions and strengths of D2 O-18 and HD O-18 were obtained with a Fourier transform spectrometer. The data were analyzed to obtain energy levels of the (100), (020), and (001) vibrational states of HD O-18 and the (001) and (011) states of D2 O-18 and the vibrational bands of these states connected to the ground state covered the spectral region from 2500 to 4278 cm(exp -1). 456 absorption lines of D2 O-18 and 856 lines of HD O-18 were assigned from the spectra. The measurements were of oxygen-18 enriched samples of deuterated water vapor and the spectra also contained features of HD O-16, D2 O-16, H2 O-16, H2 O-17 and H2 O-18 of which several were used as frequency calibration standards.

Liquid-Vapor Coexistence and Critical Point of Mg 2 SiO 4 From Ab Initio Simulations

Hypervelocity impact-driven vaporization is characteristic of late-stage planet formation. Yet the behavior and properties of liquid-vapor mixtures of planetary materials of interest are typically unknown. Multiphase equations of state used in hydrodynamic simulations of planet impacts therefore lack reliable data for this important phenomenon. Here, we present the first constraints on the liquid-vapor critical point and coexistence phase boundary of Mg2SiO4 computed from ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. We found that the vapor is depleted in magnesium and enriched in silica and oxygen, while the coexisting liquid is enriched in magnesium and depleted in oxygen, from which we infer vaporization is incongruent. The critical point was estimated from an equation of state fit to the data. The results are in line with recent calculations of MgSiO3 and together confirm that extant multiphase equation of state (EOS) models used in planetary accretion modeling significantly underestimate the amount of supercritical material postimpact.

The origin of carbon monoxide in Neptunes's atmosphere

The CO abundance in the observable atmosphere of Neptune can be plausibly explained by rapid vertical mixing from the deeper atmosphere if Neptune has a greater complement of water than Uranus. Thermochemical equilibrium and kinetic calculations reveal that Neptune must and Uranus may have about 10 times more oxygen than carbon, whereas for Jupiter and Saturn equal enrichments of carbon and oxygen are satifactory to explain the observed CO abundances by deep vertical mixing. Relative to hydrogen and solar composition, the respective enrichment factors for carbon and oxygen are 41, 440 (Neptune); 32, less than or equal 260 (Uranus); 6.6, 6.6 (Saturn); and 2.8, 2.8 (Jupiter). Because water ice is the most refractory ice among the ices assumed to be present in the outer solar nebula, the most massive H2O enrichment is expected for the outermost planet of this group. Thus, Neptune can indeed be regarded as the 'god of the seas.'

Investigations of Polymethacrylate Tribochemical Films Using X-Ray Spectroscopy and Optical Profilometry

This study investigates the elemental composition and surface morphology of solid tribochemical films formed on steel surfaces. The reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) method was used to synthesize nine different metal-free polymers, which were blended into commercial base oils. The polymers were either homopolymers of dodecyl methacrylate and ethylhexyl methacrylate or were co-polymers of these monomers with six polar monomers. After tribological testing at 100 degrees C using the ball-on-flat geometry, the resulting tribochemical films were imaged using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy. The resulting tribochemical films have thicknesses around 50-100 nm. Two of the films corresponding to small (P1-imidazole-containing copolymer) and large (P3-less polar homopolymer) wear were cross-sectioned using focused ion beam (FIB) and analyzed for elemental composition using energy-dispersive X-Ray (EDX) mapping. Oxygen and nitrogen enrichment was observed, consistent with the relative chemical composition of the precursor polymers. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) evidence suggests that at the worn surface, some organic elements penetrate or are mixed into the steel substrate giving an interlocking appearance. The two samples examined with TEM showed that P1 tribofilm is diffused or mixed with the steel substrate more so than P3, suggesting a stronger affinity and contact during tribofilm formation.
