X-48B Preliminary Flight Test Results

This slide presentation reviews the preliminary Flight tests of the X-48B development program. The X-48B is a blended wing body aircraft that is being used to test various features of the BWB concept. The research concerns the following: (1) Turbofan Development, (2) Intelligent Flight Control and Optimization, (3) Airdata Calibration (4) Parameter Identification (i.e., Determination of the parameters of a mathematical model of a system based on observation of the system inputs and response.)

Galileo spacecraft modal identification using an eigensystem realization algorithm

A modal parameter identification technique referred to as the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA) was applied to free-response measurements from the Galileo spacecraft modal survey test. The data were recorded following single-point random excitation of the structure. This work is one phase in a research project coordinated by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to compare the performance of various contemporary identification techniques using Galileo data. Principal emphasis is placed on estimating the accuracy of the ERA-identified modal parameters. Various accuracy indicators, such as Modal Amplitude Coherence and Modal Phase Collinearity, are discussed. More than 20 modes of the spacecraft were identified, demonstrating the ability of the ERA method to determine the dynamics of such complex structures using only a few seconds of test data.

Real-time flutter identification

The techniques and a FORTRAN 77 MOdal Parameter IDentification (MOPID) computer program developed for identification of the frequencies and damping ratios of multiple flutter modes in real time are documented. Physically meaningful model parameterization was combined with state of the art recursive identification techniques and applied to the problem of real time flutter mode monitoring. The performance of the algorithm in terms of convergence speed and parameter estimation error is demonstrated for several simulated data cases, and the results of actual flight data analysis from two different vehicles are presented. It is indicated that the algorithm is capable of real time monitoring of aircraft flutter characteristics with a high degree of reliability.

Nonlinear smoothing identification algorithm with application to data consistency checks

A parameter identification algorithm for nonlinear systems is presented. It is based on smoothing test data with successively improved sets of model parameters. The smoothing, which is iterative, provides all of the information needed to compute the gradients of the smoothing performance measure with respect to the parameters. The parameters are updated using a quasi-Newton procedure, until convergence is achieved. The advantage of this algorithm over standard maximum likelihood identification algorithms is the computational savings in calculating the gradient. This algorithm was used for flight-test data consistency checks based on a nonlinear model of aircraft kinematics. Measurement biases and scale factors were identified. The advantages of the presented algorithm and model are discussed.

Frequency-Domain Identification With Composite Curve Fitting

Improved method of parameter identification based on decomposing single wide-band model into two or more component systems in parallel. Each component model predominates in specific frequency range. Wide-band mathematical model of system identified as two narrow-band models: one containing most of information on high-frequency components of dynamics, and one containing most of information on low-frequency components. Applicable to diverse systems, including vibrating structures, electronic circuits, and control systems.

Theoretic aspects of the identification of the parameters in the optimal control model

The identification of the parameters of the optimal control model from input-output data of the human operator is considered. Accepting the basic structure of the model as a cascade of a full-order observer and a feedback law, and suppressing the inherent optimality of the human controller, the parameters to be identified are the feedback matrix, the observer gain matrix, and the intensity matrices of the observation noise and the motor noise. The identification of the parameters is a statistical problem, because the system and output are corrupted by noise, and therefore the solution must be based on the statistics (probability density function) of the input and output data of the human operator. However, based on the statistics of the input-output data of the human operator, no distinction can be made between the observation and the motor noise, which shows that the model suffers from overparameterization.

The human controller in car following

The man machine interface between the human driver and his automobile during car following tasks was examined. A direct connection between models of the human operator and the theory of optimal control was established for car following situations involving both linear and nonlinear car dynamics. Results obtained from several types of mathematical models are discussed. Conventional parameter identification techniques were used to obtain the parameters of these models by comparing their performance to data obtained by aerial photogrammetry. The results indicate that there are two general classes of model structures: models assumed to have preview information and models without preview.

Attitude determination and calibration using a recursive maximum likelihood-based adaptive Kalman filter

An adaptive Kalman filter design that utilizes recursive maximum likelihood parameter identification is discussed. At the center of this design is the Kalman filter itself, which has the responsibility for attitude determination. At the same time, the identification algorithm is continually identifying the system parameters. The approach is applicable to nonlinear, as well as linear systems. This adaptive Kalman filter design has much potential for real time implementation, especially considering the fast clock speeds, cache memory and internal RAM available today. The recursive maximum likelihood algorithm is discussed in detail, with special attention directed towards its unique matrix formulation. The procedure for using the algorithm is described along with comments on how this algorithm interacts with the Kalman filter.

Flight test maneuvers for closed loop lateral-directional modeling of the F-18 High Alpha Research Vehicle (HARV) using forebody strakes

Flight test maneuvers are specified for the F-18 High Alpha Research Vehicle (HARV). The maneuvers were designed for closed loop parameter identification purposes, specifically for lateral linear model parameter estimation at 30, 45, and 60 degrees angle of attack, using the Actuated Nose Strakes for Enhanced Rolling (ANSER) control law in Strake (S) model and Strake/Thrust Vectoring (STV) mode. Each maneuver is to be realized by applying square wave inputs to specific pilot station controls using the On-Board Excitation System (OBES). Maneuver descriptions and complete specification of the time/amplitude points defining each input are included, along with plots of the input time histories.

Dynamics and identification of flexible aircraft

The equations of motion and a maximum likelihood parameter identification formulation are developed for a flexible aircraft. The various levels of approximation associated with the modal substitution representation of the elastic displacement field are discussed and illustrated when appropriate. The necessary extension of the parameter set of stability and control derivatives due to the aeroelastic effects is obtained.

Orbiter Flying Qualities (OFQ) Workstation user's guide

This project was devoted to the development of a software package, called the Orbiter Flying Qualities (OFQ) Workstation, for working with the OFQ Archives which are specially selected sets of space shuttle entry flight data relevant to flight control and flying qualities. The basic approach to creation of the workstation software was to federate and extend commercial software products to create a low cost package that operates on personal computers. Provision was made to link the workstation to large computers, but the OFQ Archive files were also converted to personal computer diskettes and can be stored on workstation hard disk drives. The primary element of the workstation developed in the project is the Interactive Data Handler (IDH) which allows the user to select data subsets from the archives and pass them to specialized analysis programs. The IDH was developed as an application in a relational database management system product. The specialized analysis programs linked to the workstation include a spreadsheet program, FREDA for spectral analysis, MFP for frequency domain system identification, and NIPIP for pilot-vehicle system parameter identification. The workstation also includes capability for ensemble analysis over groups of missions.

Efficient optimal design of suspension systems for rotating shafts

A new technique is proposed for the optimum design of suspension systems for rotating shafts. In this approach the conventional method of trial and error search for optimum parameter values for a prescribed design configuration has been replaced by an efficient two-stage procedure. In the first stage a generic force is substituted for the suspension system to be designed and the absolute optimum (or limiting) performance characteristics of the shaft are computed. In the second stage, using a chosen suspension system configuration, parameter identification techniques are are applied to find the design parameters so that the suspension system will respond as close as possible to the absolute optimal performance. In this approach the repetitive shaft analyses required in the conventional search techniques are avoided. Hence, the new technique is relatively efficient computationally and is suitable for large systems. Both linear and nonlinear suspension systems can be designed. A simple Jeffcott rotor is used to demonstrate the new technique.

Neuromorphic learning of continuous-valued mappings in the presence of noise: Application to real-time adaptive control

The ability of feed-forward neural net architectures to learn continuous-valued mappings in the presence of noise is demonstrated in relation to parameter identification and real-time adaptive control applications. Factors and parameters influencing the learning performance of such nets in the presence of noise are identified. Their effects are discussed through a computer simulation of the Back-Error-Propagation algorithm by taking the example of the cart-pole system controlled by a nonlinear control law. Adequate sampling of the state space is found to be essential for canceling the effect of the statistical fluctuations and allowing learning to take place.

Single-mode projection filters for identification and state estimation of flexible structures

Single-mode projection filters are developed for eigensystem parameter identification and state estimation from both analytical results and test data. Explicit formulations of these projection filters are derived using the pseudoinverse matrices of the controllabilty and observability matrices in the general sense. A global minimum optimization algorithm is developed to update the filter parameters by using the interval analysis method. Modal parameters can be identified and updated in the global sense within a specified region of parameters by passing the experimental data through the projection filters. For illustration of this new approach, a numerical example is shown by using a one-dimensional global optimization algorithm to estimate modal frequencies and damping.

Parameter estimation and error analysis in environmental modeling and computation

A method for the estimation of parameters and error analysis in the development of nonlinear modeling for environmental impact assessment studies is presented. The modular computer program can interactively fit different nonlinear models to the same set of data, dynamically changing the error structure associated with observed values. Parameter estimation techniques and sequential estimation algorithms employed in parameter identification and model selection are first discussed. Then, least-square parameter estimation procedures are formulated, utilizing differential or integrated equations, and are used to define a model for association of error with experimentally observed data.
